  1. I thought I'd bring back this thread, but with a spin. We're getting ready for swim team this summer and hats just aren't an option for my redhead dd. does anyone have a favorite sunblock that won't wear off? What I put on her body tends to stay on for the time we practice (and I'll reapply if it's a long day at the pool) but whatever I put on her face seems to last all of 5 minutes. Any favorite brands out there?

    TIA

    Shannon

I know it isn't rated the highest, but my brother in law is a surfer, and they all swear by Banana Boat KIDS (no other type). It has worked well for us (redheads) and definitely doesn't come off until you use soap.

Like someone else said, though - if you burn in 15 minutes normally, it is only going to give you the Protection extrapolated from that. This website explains it:

  2. As someone who was a "talker" as a child...

Two things are going on: one, you have thoughts bombarding your senses to such a degree you feel that you must get them out or your head is going to explode and two (no one is going to like this one)...

You feel as if no one is listening to anything you are saying.

You feel insignificant. Yes, even at 6.

If you want to modulate a "talker", set aside some time, every day, for just you and them, in a place that has nothing to do with YOU. Don't bring a book, don't play with your cell phone, don't knit - nothing. Maybe sit at a park and ask them to tell you all about what they see. Lay on the grass and point out shapes in the clouds together.

Believe it or not, when the child feels they are really being listened to, the never ending chatter at YOU will cease. They'll probably still sit around making up stories about their toys, etc. - but that's just because their brain is moving at Mach 10.

Go to Hoagie's gifted page and look around for puzzles and such. My mom came up with some interesting complex manipulatives that really required concentration. They helped a lot.

  3. And yet, the sheer number of "but it is so much cheaper to buy it at Wal-Mart" (with "it" comprising various topics) permeates this board.

One can argue "informed consumer" all one wants, but 1. I don't think anyone would accuse the members of this board of being uninformed (or incapable of becoming informed should they so wish), so 2. I think most people are quite comfortable in their "it's cheaper, it's ok" ignorance.

Righteous indignation isn't going to change a society that is h3llbent on cheaper cheaper cheaper.

  4. Thanks to all.

I realize there is no "going home again".

To tell the truth, I don't particularly care for pop culture in either location. I sort of felt being a home owner would allow me to embrace my hermit-ish-ness. :001_smile: It's hard to "do your own thing" when you step outside your front door and have to greet and be greeted by the entire neighborhood of apartment dwellers.

Yes, we do have community gardens. I've been on the waiting list for a plot for three years now, and probably have another 2-3 years to go. They are in pretty high demand. However, it would be hard to have a garden here and visit family with regularity for the whole middle part of the year... who would take over my garden? lol.

I know I'll get over this, but it was a major blow.

    Sorry to hear this.

I think the reason I lucked out was because my building is (strangely) nestled in amongst similar old houses that have been taken over by businesses (doctors, architects, etc.), so I'm not constantly running into "neighbors" - rather, a random assortment of people who don't necessarily want to talk! (Woo hoo!)

  5. Do you have the (well this is what the locals here call them) "crazy chicken people" or the "crazy garden people" plots there?

You know, the 2 acres where a huge number of people each have a tiny plot with an overly stylized wooden garden shed (that they somehow almost live in in good weather) and a meticulously tended garden?

There are some more "down-scale" versions here as well... they would be a good garden substitute.

Also, you never know what you might find lurking in your canton - I found a building from 1885 that had a huge tiered garden behind it - but only for my flat. The other flats had their own bennies (a garage, a big balcony, etc.). You can't see it from the front - I lucked upon it. It was in disrepair, so the landlord wasn't advertising it, but I've been working on it.

    Things will work out.

  6. You can't go 'home' again.

Despite what you may think from afar, everyone back there has moved along according to 'American' norms. And despite what you may think about yourself from where you sit, you have not 'kept up' with those same cultural norms.

Fish out of water and all that.

Yeah, it's great to "see the family" on visits. But until we decide to plop ourselves down on a piece of land and re-establish ourselves (and our identities) as full-on Americans-who-no-longer-move-about... nope - not going there.

Even kid isn't going to an American uni. He can't stand the atmosphere.

  7. There have been several discussions of adrenal issues here, so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I can't seem to navigate joining another health board at the moment to post this question, and my doc is unreachable this weekend. If anyone has experience to share it would be appreciated.

I have Addison's and take Cortef daily. When I'm sick, I raise the dose to 30 mg daily - that's my stress dose.

4 weeks ago I had the flu, and doc called in Tamiflu & prednisone - a much higher stress dose than normal to fight the flu. It worked beautifully.

Unbelievably, this has been a very sick 4 weeks. Once we all (DH & DS had it too) recovered, DH left the country on business and the kids came down with the stomach virus that's going around here (vomiting and diarrhea). I dodged that one, but was exhausted by the time DH came home, as the baby had the virus for 7 days. (it was a nightmare!). ...DH arrived home sick, and within days every member of our family had high fevers (up to 104) and we've all been sick since. Again, we are on Tamiflu - for strains A & B of flu, this time a German variant, that has basically closed down DH's German office. In the midst of this, my Dad is in the ICU after emergency surgery - I'm sure that stress is not helping either.

I am taking my usual 30 mg stress dose (cortef), but not doing well. Does anyone else have Addison's here? Can I increase my Cortef? My doc is fairly good with listening to my needs, and would probably support it ... But I am paranoid about using too much steroid.

I see the doc on Tues, but that feels so, so far away.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

And... Sorry to sound like the post of doom here... It's unreal how sick we've been this month!

I'm sorry I saw this too late, but I wanted to tell you to hang on to your hat in regards to the German variant. DH, who NEVER gets ill, got it last month and couldn't shake it for at least 3 weeks.

I'm guessing your doc will keep you on your regular Cortef and give you a booster shot. (I'm not on it - I have secondary Addison's - cure worse than the disease and all that :p )

  8. How does she feel about "genetically modified" in her organic?

It is becoming harder and harder to find organic foods in the USA that do not contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients, which goes against the definition of "organic". US law does not require labeling to tell you whether the food contains genetically modified ingredients.

    http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/226613.php

    Yep.

'Organic' is a BS term. All organic truly means is 'carbon based' - and don't think for a second that companies rely on that fact.

  9. Well, are they all gung-ho for fighting like we are? I just don't get that impression for some reason. In any case, as I said before, the SS is not the main reason for why I want to leave. And Germany's not my first choice. Canada is.

And before anyone says it, if someone cites Canada's conscription service as a reason for not going, I should just like to point out that I fully endorse and support the NHL.

They don't need to be - it is an established fact that the US military has been the primary military support for the EU counties since WWII. Not a single one can match the US on technology - they don't even try - their budgets are apportioned to their welfare states, not their national defense.

If the US were to pull out of the EU tomorrow, all h3ll would break loose worldwide. The US isn't the 'aggressor' everyone would like to present them as; they are the glue holding most of the world together.

  10. When kid first started attending the local piping band, the instructor decided to yell at him. His crime? Playing above his station... erm level.

She was the gargoyle at the gate - everyone who was going to join the band had to go through her "group" to get the basics of "being in a band" (how to march, how to play in a group vs solo, etc.).

Well... she wasn't his private tutor, someone else was. And he was a MUCH better player than anyone in her group (all of whom she taught), even if he didn't know "band" stuff yet.

You know what? Don't yell at my kid unless I've given you permission to. (his aunts can henpeck him all they want, LOL) I don't care how old he is. I don't view it as a learning experience: I view it as the adult NOT being in control of themselves and therefore being a threat to my child. We won't even go into the public humiliation angle.

That was 6 years ago, and I *still* can't get kid to try playing in a band - it was THAT horrifying to him.

I think people really underestimate the damage a tutor can have on a student when they humiliate them in front of everyone - not because they have done something badly or aren't following the rules - but because the tutor is an @ss.

  11. I'm surprised that they didn't specify SAT II in German - did you ask about the Goethe Institute test instead of that SAT II? If not you might ask - SATs may be her default answer for Americans, but they may accept the other one.

She said it should be fine, but that I should double check with the American counselor (she was the African and Eastern counselor). The main thing, apparently, was proving one's level.

There are some university league tables that you can look at to see how Glasgow rates on the criteria that are most important to you. I couldn't find a table that corresponded very closely to that course. This might be the closest. Here's the one for German. The general ranking is here.

    Best wishes

    Laura

We're not too concerned with how it is ranked, as apparently it does quite well:

Central and East European Studies at Glasgow is recognised as one of the world's leading centres for research and research training in this field. In the most recent independent review of research quality (RAE 2008), Central and East European Studies at Glasgow was rated first in Scotland and fifth in the UK, with 85% of our work rated ‘international’, ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.

The University Library holds one of the best Russian, Central and East European collections in the world.

  12. Ah.

Currently, he is looking at the MA in Central and East European Studies at Glasgow. They also have a dual honors w/ German that is attractive to him.

When I called the International Students office, they told me he would need an SAT and two SAT2s, though it didn't matter which ones for this major (huh? that sounds odd...). She commented that it was because he would have already completed 12 years of schooling and a glide year.

Looking at the available SAT2s, it appears that World History would obviously be a good one, as would German, but it would be more convenient to get a Goethe certificate for the German than do an SAT2 for it (cheaper, too - good Lord are SAT international rates high!). So I'm not sure what else he should do - Literature is NOT his strong point...

  13. Has anyone here who has HSd through high school gone on to complete the UCAS for UK universities? (for their kid I mean)

I'm just wondering what I'm going to be in for, paperwork wise (eg: just a transcript or a transcript plus course descriptions etc.)

    Thx

    Asta

  14. Thanks.

Yes, we actually do have to use Express-scripts, unless we want to pay full retail out-of-pocket.

I'm also really bummed Walgreens is no longer in the network. Our neighbor is the general manager at the local Walgreens, and we always got issues resolved promptly.:001_smile:

Talk to your benefits manager. For life and death medications (diabetes) there are exceptions in ExpressScripts. I was allowed "out" because I can't be without my anticonvulsants even for a day, so if something in their system gets screwed up, or it gets lost in the mail, I would be screwed.

    Check on it.

  15. 1. When does your contract run out?

    2. She can't make you do anything.

    3. One of the best things I ever did was buy a "how to sell your house yourself" book and follow all of the recommendations (put half of your belongings in storage, you only recoup fixing the bath and kitchen, do "staging", etc.)

    4. The best kept secret, IMO for new flooring when having to sell an older house: the polypropylene berber carpet on the HUGE rolls on the back wall of home depot. Install that crap over the "premium" carpet pad and everyone thinks you spent a bundle on new flooring. The "gush" factor psychs them into thinking it is expensive...

    5. The .99 tile of the month at Home Depot is your friend. It rotates in color, but is always a neutral. Works great for bathroom floors. There is even a trend to put larger tiles on walls now.

    6. Check builder's supply places for "returns" on shower enclosures. One of my girlfriends got a $2500 enclosure for a couple hundred bucks because it was black. If you're already starting from scratch, you may be able to deal with beige instead of white, etc.

  16. One more reason I would never join HSLDA.

It drives me batty when people assume that other cultures view the world the same way they do.

Germany (and any other country) is NOT the United States of America. It has a different governmental system, a different social system, etc. Americans may argue against the German (and other nations') method of testing children and separating them into vocational, apprentice and university bound tracks, but it works for their societies.

As an aside, there have been many articles in the US press lately bemoaning the lack of formal apprenticeship programs in the US, as the "everyone should go to college" push has not worked out so well for many people (e.g. not everyone who has showed up was "up" for it).
