  1. We're using WWE3 and after having the same issues, I set it aside. My ds loves the readings, but the narration guidance was too broad and the dictation sentences were too much. We now narrate history: I go through the narration questions, guide him on formulating a response, write down the sentences, then dictate it back to him. We do straight dictation sentences for science, usually the main idea of a passage he's read. The point of dictation is holding the thought in his head (see SWB's video with her son Daniel) and exposure to beautiful writing. I didn't find the WWE dictation selections great examples of writing. So, we still follow the WWE guidelines, but use history and science instead of WWE as a separate writing program. I added WWW because I wanted ds to have greater guidance in composition. He's enjoying it and he works independently.

  2. I'd get a second opinion but not be surprised if this what's recommended. I've had two free consultations for dd. Each orthodontist was more than willing to take a look at her teeth and give me their opinion. One even took x-rays and spent 30 minutes answering questions. All for free! Orthodontia is a medical specialty where people "shop around" so the doctors seem more willing to spend time answering questions.

  3. Just to e clear I am not defending Paterno. I don't have any personal feelings about him or whether or not he has a job. I simply feel that in the current media environment it is easy rush to judgement without having all the facts. I don't think football is more important than children. I think those who knew something and didn't tell police should be held accountable. I also think that we don't have all the facts and that the "fire everyone" and ask questions later approach isn't necessarily the best or most prudent.

Normally, I am cautious about a rush to judgement, as shown by rush to condemn the men in the Duke rape case. However, the facts are Sandusky had multiple reports of inappropriate contact with children. He was counseled in 1998 about his conduct; he retired in 1999. After the 2002 incident, Penn State banned him from contact with children on the campus. If it rises to the level of prohibiting conduct on campus, it warrants police attention.

  4. If the articles online are correct the grad student who called Joe Pa said he thought he saw something inappropriate. That's a far cry from what that same student said to the grand jury about what he witnessed where he specified that he saw a crime. If all Joe Parerno was told was that there was potentially something inappropriate going on it seems notifying his supervisor was the proper response.

It was inappropriate enough that Sandusky was banned from bringing children on campus. The 2002 incident was not the only reported incident to the Penn State authorities. There were other reports made and only one was actually reported to the police. Had all the incidents been forwarded to the police, it would have been suscipious enough to warrant further investigation. No matter the alleged actions, the fact remains Joe Pa had an employee with multiplie allegations of abuse against him and Joe Pa chose to do nothing except protect the Penn State football program. There are many culpable adults in this situation, but Joe Pa doesn't get to wash his hands and turn away because he did his duty. He was the head coach and in a football program like Penn State's, the head coach IS the ultimate boss.

  5. My other fabulous, wonderful "accessory" is a bit more involved. I have a hot water dispenser that we put in when we remodeled the kitchen a few years ago. It's so wonderful. ;) Probably you can't add that on a whim. ;) But I love having filtered, hot-but-not-quite-boiling water ready at any moment.

As to tea bags vs loose tea and strainers... Well.... I'm afraid I've come to the conclusion that there's a reason tea bags were invented. :)

I shouldn't feel envy, but I want a hot water dispenser! I keep hoping we'll FINALLY get to renovate the kitchen, but it looks like major changes are going to have to wait another few years. Also, I'd love a tankless water heater. Now that my dc are taking showers, the hot water disappears quickly.

  6. I bought a French press, usually used for coffee. I don't have to worry about straining out tea leaves and I heat my water using a metal tea pot I purchased at Target. My last teapot lasted me six years until dh left too many pots of water in it and the bottom rusted out. I'd recommend going for a good metal teapot, not too expensive, with the understanding it will need to be replaced every few years.

  7. We went to Ubud Indonsia and I left a silver ring that was my mom's at the hotel. I had searched high and low, over an hour. Later, I called the hotel, we we about 45 minutes away, and they had found it. I guess they won't mail it. My neighbor has been in Ubud for the week and was going to get my ring. Her husband doesn't like going out in the evening and during the day they have been sightseeing.....She emailed me and said they won't be getting my ring. I am soo dissappointed. In the end, it doesn't matter because it is no different than now.

I left something in Mexico once and the hotel couldn't send it to me. The excuse was the difficulty in shipping internationally things of uncertain value. It was flimsy, but no amount of arguing would change the answer.

I think it's awful your friend won't take the time to get the ring. She's right there! So sorry!
