  1. I realized I didn't fully answer your question. My youngest DS (7) is special needs and we use it a lot with him. We've found great success in leapfrog and teach me kindergarten apps. There are several more, but those are his main two. For my other ds's (9 & 10), we use apps for math, la, science, history, art, spelling, etc. Most of these the boys dont even think they're doing schoolwork....so its a big hit around here.

It is basically like a big iPhone. I started off with a MacBook around 4-5 years ago, eventually got the iPhone, and waited for the iPad 2 to come out because I wanted the changes they made. ;) We're definitely a Mac "preferred" family. Lol If you get one, give yourself time to really get used to it...it can be overwhelming at first, but I havent found an "age" where the iPad isn't a great teaching tool! It can and absolutely will grow with the kids...and be extremely useful throughout their hs and college education. I hope this helps!

  2. Thanks ladies! That's what Im looking for - something we can stick with. I guess I was thrown off that he wasn't reading fluently when we finished the first book...so the next year we did an online reading program - but it didn't focus on the phonetics....which I thought he had down from "100 easy lessons" and he did have the sounds down, just wasn't fully understanding sounding things out that didn't look like they were from the first book, ya know?

Thanks for heading me in the right direction! I definitely don't want to be wasting another year!

  3. Thats true Ellie....

I have a special needs DS (7) so I know DS 9 isn't impaired...I guess I was more referring to the struggle in interest etc. He has a tendency to cry when he has to read (multiple times a day)...and I guess it's because his total lack of interest that he doesn't care so therefore doesn't retain?

This is my 3rd year homeschooling and I had no idea how difficult it could be to teach a child to read...ugh. In K his teacher did sight words...and he lost those pretty quickly before starting 1st grade at one...so each year I've been trying different curriculums, methods, and was thinking that a spelling/reading curriculum might be the ticket??

I already feel like I'm failing miserably even though we complete what we need to each year...just hoping to find something that will stick with him ya know?

  4. My DS is 9 years old and just struggles reading...not because he can't...but because he's just not interested. He's an extreme outdoorsy boy...hates being inside...and hates sitting still. He's not ADD or anything...just a typical boy who wants to play outside all the time. I've ordered Boys Life magazine, but wondered if you all had suggestions. We've done "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons". He can read...just needs a lot of work with fluency & somehow to tie in spelling too. Ugh. Help! lol
