  1. Since they don't have kids, I would advise him to take the dream job, but keep the part-time computer work as well. Save up a bunch of money and then see where things are in a couple years. That way his computer skills will still be up, they will have money saved up, and they will have time to see if the "dream job" really is a dream. If he still LOVES the dream job after a year or two, I would feel more confident telling him to go for it. Sometimes a job seems like your dream job until you are in it and realize it isn't what you thought. I would hate for him to give up the computer stuff for good and then have the dream job not work out, kwim?

    That's a good point.

  2. I really like doing a baked oatmeal casserole because I'm NOT a morning person. The casserole can be prepared the night before and just popped in the oven in the morning. Even better - my dh is up before me and puts it in the oven so by the time I get up it's ready! ;)

At least 5 out of 7 days at this point the kids are eating cold cereal. I'd like to bring that down to 2 or 3 but the most creative I'd get for breakfast is oatmeal/cream of wheat, muffins, banana dogs (banana and pb in a wrap), granola and yogurt - all quick things or things that can be prepared ahead of time.

  3. It costs more, but I'd skip them all and use Headsprout. It's amazing and proven. The methodology builds confidence from the start....the child is reading his or her first book after, I think, just 4 lessons. It starts with sounds that are always the same....ee....sh...v...etc. None of the silly short nonsense, which I always hated bc short a has different sounds in itself! My kids have both become excellent readers as a result of this program.

My oldest used Headsprout and is a phenomenal reader. My second is currently on about lesson 60 of Headsprouts 100 and is doing very, very well. Certainly reading above grade level. I am finding that she struggles a bit with the short vowel sounds when she's trying to work through her ETC workbooks but we use AAS so that gets cleared up in time.

  4. HSBC has had it at least 3 times now - last fall, this spring, and this fall. I assume they'll probably have it again next spring. It's on sale for 20% off very often. I've never paid full price for it. I bought grade 1 last fall, then needed grade 2 before the next HSBC sale, so got that at 20% off also. Then the HSBC sale came back in April (I think?) and I picked up the whole light blue set for $65.

Good to know. We have our SM stuff for this year (3A/B) but dh has always been the "math teacher" and now his schedule has changed and it's making it a lot harder for him to do it which might neccesitate a change.

  5. Depends on what you consider "Singapore".

I think it is somewhere between the Singapore textbook/workbook and the IP/CWP. So if you're just using Singapore textbook/workbook, MM is more rigorous. If you're using IP/CWP, Singapore is more rigorous.

And that's why I use MM as my spine, with IP/CWP as added extra challenge. :D This is working fabulously here.

Interesting. Thus far we've only been using the SM text and workbook. At the 3A level we're adding in the CWP (starting with book 2 and hoping to move through it quickly). Dd has struggled a bit with fractions and I was wondering about grabbing the MM fractions book to try it out. I like the sounds of it being a step about the text/workbook of SM in one comprehensive book.

  6. When my girls were 2 and 5, we got them iPod Touches for Christmas. Before wrapping them, I loaded them up with kid friendly and educational game apps, home videos, their favorite TV shows, a Disney movie, and family photos. To this day, nearly 2 years later, it is *the* best gift we've ever gotten them. It's the gift that keeps giving.....we slip an iTunes gift card into their stockings or Easter baskets, or for birthdays. And then they can choose all new things. Of course, I monitor it and I have to help them load new things.

We gave it to them complete with a screen protector and silicone case for protection. Neither iPod has never been broken (although they have been dropped) or lost (they have been temporarily misplaced though).

You totally get the cool mom award. I *almost* bought my girls MP3 players last year and then just went with a cheap CD player. Dd 8yo is talking about wanting an IPod for Christmas but always says, "Even though I won't likely get one".

  7. For that age? Itouch. Hands down. Ds11 is on his second one and he loves it. It is Wifi capable and he can even get phone calls on it with the right microphone. He can text too....no monthly fee at all.

He can text? This is on the Ipod Touch? I have one and had no idea I could text - that would be awesome if I could just text dh and not have to call and disrupt him at work just to pass along a message or ask him to stop for milk on the way home.

  8. We do, but it's more by default than by any kind of intentional planning on my part. It never fails that when we are going somewhere at least one if not all of the kids brings a book or two and they often get left in the van. When I notice a lot of books "floating around" the vehicle I clean it out and they start all over again! We also have an audio book going 95% of the time.

  9. Among the homeschoolers I know who have chosen MM as (one of) their primary math resources, it mainly comes down to two things--given that first it is a strong program, as are many others available.

    1) Price. It's a whole lotta math for a very reasonable price, esp. when you pick it up on HSBC for 50% off.

    2) Electronic format / reusable for multiple kids. At no extra cost, of course.

Due to 1, I picked up a copy of the Dark Blue series by topic, and use it as an occasional supplement to shore up areas of confusion / weakness. I think this flexibility of MM--by grade or by topic--is also an advantage.

Is the HSBC deal something that happens on a regular basis? We are happy with Singapore for now but I'm not sure it's what we'll stick with. At very least I think we could benefit from some of the supplemental units.

  10. Well, I have an admission to make...I've just been using Chore Pad HD on the iPad, and Chore Pad regular on the iPod - they don't sync yet, but it's in the works. And yes, I set up school work as chores.

I don't think there IS an app that can go between PC and an iDevice - not that I've seen in any case. I know there are folks looking for them, but haven't seen one yet, sorry!

That Chore Pad app looks amazing!

  11. Do you guys do quiet time on the weekends also or only during the week? During the week we can do quiet time and it's enjoyed by all but on weekends it seems like we're usually on the go or are in the middle of doing something as a family.

We stick to quiet time on the weekend when it fits in with whatever else we're doing. If we're home at quiet time, we do it; if not, we don't.

  12. Busywork. Yuck.

Making fake fossils? There is a "fossil park" near here where you can go do a "dig" of real fossils in real stone (it's sponosred by a quarry.) It's free.

Printing pictures out? Check out picture books from the library. There are some wonderful science books with great big illustrations.

    And so on.

I am a fan of authentic enjoyment, not fun that makes more work for mom. Spend the time with your dc instead. Playing games, joining them in sports in the backyard, reading books together, making up silly inside jokes, enjoying everything we learn. The kiddos won't care if you have a big blog of pictures of fun activities, trust me. :D

Thank you for this - really. I was reading this last night and beating myself up about not being "that crafty mom". Our year this year has been a bit rough and I was feeling down about it already. We're studying dolphins right now and I've been trying to do little projects along the way but after they are done I'm left feeling kind of....empty. For all the prep it seems silly to me. We do have a well stocked craft cupboard and I try to take advantage of opportunities in the community for them to do classroom type crafts. It's especially trying to make an effort at the crafts when it's not something I enjoy. Things like History Pockets are generally as crafty as I get :) I may work in some more lapbooking this year - I can handle that.

Thanks for the encouragement - different strokes for different folks!

  13. We have just started Click N Read. Dd has done lessons 10-14 and so far, so good. I like that it asks her to identify beginning and ending sounds of words, do blending and segmenting and review simple letter/sound recognition. Hopefully she continues to enjoy it! I got it for just $30 through the Homeschool Buyers Co-op and it's a lifetime membership so ds can use it after her. For that price I was willing to give it a try.

  14. Isn't PAL quite time consuming? I'd love to try it but I don't have hours in the day to devote to it. I also can't seem to wrap my brain around exactly what is in the program. I find AAR very clearly explained on her site. I don't want AAR because it looks a bit below my kids' current abilities.

  15. I don't have an IPAD but my husband asked me if I would like one for Christmas to use to keep a homeschool schedule and do applications for the kids ie. writing assignments etc.

I am also wondering if you can use enhanced CDs or student worksheet CDs and convert them to PDF files then put them on the IPAD and write directly on the worksheets with the stylis ? It would be nice to be able to do worksheets directly on the IPAD and not have to photocopy so much.

I would love to hear any feedback or experience that you might have with an IPAD for doing school and or scheduling/record keeping.

    Blessings,

    AM

I don't know the answer to the bolded above but WOW! That would be phenomenal!
