  1. I posted this over on the HOD forums but I thought I'd ask here too.

I was just looking on the Singaporemath.com web site and it says:

"Earlybird U.S. Edition will not be available after May 31 2008. This series has been replaced by Earlybird Standards Edition."

On the Earlybird Standards Edition page it says "Earlybird Kindergarten Standards Edition has been approved for school adoption by the California State Board of Education."

Does anyone know how the two differ? We have started with Earlybird US Editions and I'm just wondering if I should buy books in advance or if it will be OK to continue with the Standards edition.

  2. Although I attended ps, it was in an excellent British system. Aside from that fact, I tend to look at my eduction and the result of it - me! I look at people I respect, and at their ps educations.

Ultimately, I don't think I've *ever* spoken to anyone who did narration at school! And we all turned out OK ;) We have some doctors, lawyers etc.

So, in spite of the fact that ps has issues that have caused us to hs, there are some things that I consider to be "extras" when it comes to hs'ing. I'm glad that we can choose to do them, and I think if you do do them they will reap benefits because nothing is wasted. I also think that if it's a problem causing more aggravation than benefit, it's worth it to drop it. At least until you feel you can reassess the situation.

I feel that narration is one of those things on the list of "extras".

    Just my 2c.

  3. But I went to Office Max or depot and they wanted $50 +. Is this a normal price? I thought it was high.

Jenny, I used the file in this post and it's good enough for a 20 x 30 print from Shutterfly.com which would be $22.99

I'm still going to look around and see what I can find for a better price.

  4. This was my dd's idea....she likes to memorize things. Who am I to say no? :D

I think it's a great idea because memorization is like exercise. The more you do it, the stronger you get, and this isn't exactly a bad thing to memorize! Just another thing :)

  5. I'll throw out a new idea here - since you love literature read at a slower pace CM-style' date=' and want to combine your children using a Christian focus, you may want to check out Heart of Dakota. [/quote']

I completely agree and second this suggestion - HOD is fantastic. We used MFWK and 1st, and have just switched to HOD. Absolutely loving how it is all set out and planned. Uses living books and has a wonderful CM approach.

Love it, love it, love it!

  6. That's what I did with it a few years ago. :D

I have a larger file, and I'd be happy to email it to you if you want to take it to a printer.

Crissy, would you mind if I PM my email address to you too? We're only in 1st grade so this would look awesome on our wall for the next ... ohhh..... 10 years? OK, reality check. Longer than that ;)

  7. Where do you aim for with handwriting or copywork curricula? Do you target the current level or do you try to make it a little more difficult to challenge them a little?

My dd6 is just starting HOP 1st grade for reading. I was wondering if I should use A Reason for Writing K OR A? For copywork, would I include words with phonics rules she hasn't yet learned, or should I keep it where she's at?

    TIA!

    ~Caryn~

  8. We just started Little Hands to Heaven (published by Heart of Dakota, and authored by an amazing, godly woman named Carrie Austin who is homeschooling her 4 boys) and my son loves it! My daughter is doing Little Hearts For His Glory and she loves that too. The joy has returned to our very young homeschool (we were doing MFW K and then 1st before and it didn't work for us) and both kids want to do each other's "work" on top of their own! I have to work on separating them now ;)

There is a sample week that you can download in .pdf form and which shows everything you cover in a week. It's fantastic!

  9. We completed MFWK and moved on to MFW 1st. However, we just dropped MFW 1st and switched to HOD LHFHG.

The LA in MFW 1st moved far too quickly. They have games in the TM to practice the phonics, but eventually I was going stir crazy flipping around as we moved ahead with the Bible portion and had to flip back to the LA. The camps are divided as to whether the Math in MFWK and 1st are sufficient. My dd had holes all over the place with Math so we also had to add more "formal" math (Singapore Earlybird) because their games etc just weren't really doing the trick. The hands-on, science, etc only happened two or 3 times a week which wasn't enough for my kiddos. So I was adding reading (HOP), Math (Singapore Earlybird), Science (was looking into Apologia Elementary) and whatever I could find online to add in for activities related to the theme.

Enter Heart of Dakota's "Little Hands to Heaven" (for my pre-k'er) and "Little Hearts for His Glory" (I chose the K program for DD6 even though we did MFWK because I want to fill in the gaps with math and just take a year to have FUN!) Wow! We all look forward to school every day, and they both want to do each other's work. What blew me away is that it used all the curricula I had listed as my top picks in each subject.

Anyway, I haven't used their first grade program yet, but if it's anything like the pre-K and K programs, I can't wait to use it! You can read about it here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/byd-little-hearts.php

    HTH!

    ~Caryn~

  10. I think this is a wonderful place to be. I've really not enjoyed the first curriculum we chose (MFW) so I have spent months and months researching. I've discovered that there's always something new/different over the horizon - just as I settle on something, I discover something new.

I think where you're at is a beautiful place where both you and your children are going to benefit greatly. I aim on being there. I am going to dive into doing what we have, and if something doesn't work, I'm going to look for a replacement, give myself a deadline to choose it, and get back to DOING it!!!

Thank you so much for posting this - it's an inspiration :)

  11. Wow! It's lovely - bright and well-organized making it neat and very condusive to concentrating :) Love it. Now that's the type of thing I'm hoping to achieve with our learning room.

We moved 7 times in 3 years, and have also "moved" in our current house a bazillion times. We just couldn't make it work for us. So we moved the learning things to the living room, took over a bedroom, went upstairs, came back downstairs, and have currently taken over the dining room. I still have to move things around to eat our meals at the table, but we've added some storage solutions and I hope to get organized soon.

I also plan on banning the kids (6, 5 and 5 months) from the learning room when I'm not there because I'm tired of having to reorganize the books, art supplies etc. Anyone have any creative ideas of how to overcome this?

OK...holding my breath and posting my embarrassing learning room "before" photo:

    LearningRoom1.jpg

The only storage we currently have...

    LearningRoom2.jpg

Now I'm off to do something about it!

  12. Spring has really sprung here in MA and I'm eager to refresh and rejuvenate our learning room. We do school year round, but there's always room for spending time outside and spring cleaning ;)

Does anyone else have plans for their learning room? I would LOVE to be inspired with photos and ideas.

I will post some before and after pics at some point and would love if others could do the same!

  13. :iagree:

I don't know how old your kids are, but with very young kids, I would say scale back to the basics - the 3 R's - while you take time to reasses and readjust what you're doing.

The advice given here is excellent. That's why I love this board :)

And yes, ps will show you just how little time is actually spend in learning. Equalling that means you're giving your children an education. Anything more than that is icing on the cake (in public/societal terms) and you can be encouraged by that. KNOW that whatever you do, you're doing more for your kids than ps would do.

    :grouphug:

    ~Caryn~

(who has been through exactly the same thing in the last few months with her K5'er and pre-k'er (I know :blushing:. What am I going to subject them to when they're actually meant to be learning "lots") Thanks to the mamas on this board we scaled back and we are actually beginning to enjoy learning once again.)

  14. Just thought I would mention for those planning next year's curricula that the Bob Books Collections are available at Costco (I think only B&M stores).

You can see the info here.

    "

    • Collection 3

the stories from Sets 4 and 5."

  15. OK, now I'm completely confused ;)

I do have a convention at the end of the month which I'm very excited to go to. I will definitely have a look there.

I'm looking for a program that introduces a concept and works for mastery before moving on. The way I "lost" math as a kid was not understanding some foundational basics before they moved on, and I just never got it after that. I had enough to pass but it was a frustration and has left me "math handicapped" for life.

I don't want a program that takes many years before it touches on some concepts. I want them to learn everything at it's basic level, and then move on in difficulty in steps, doing everything (or most things!) before moving on to the next difficulty.

    What would that be?
