Yesterday was vegetable day for me. It was a very nice change. I am down one more pound. Only three more days to go. I can hardly wait for Sunday.
-
I am on day 6 of this diet. I am probably around 15-20 pounds over my ideal weight. My scale only weighs to the .5 pound.
Starting day
Morning of day 2 - no weight loss
Morning of day 3 - 1.5 pounds
Morning of day 4 - 1.0 pounds
Morning of day 5 - .5 pounds
Morning of day 6 - 1.5 pounds
Total weight loss so far is 4.5 pounds
I have stayed the same for two days in a row now. But today is veggie day so maybe that will help!
Morning of day 7 - no weight loss
Morning of day 8 - no weight loss

Is this the current comma rule that most teachers/professors are going to require for writing assignments?
Use a comma before the conjunction when it joins independent clauses or sentences. Exception to this rule: IF you are using the conjunction and and If either one of the sentences contains four words or less, do not use a comma.

Anyone happen to know what the differences are between copyright dates on the different levels of Megawords? i.e. Is a 1998 level 1 teachers book easily usable with a 2004 student edition? etc. or do the copyright dates need to match up with the student and teacher editions?
Have huge changes been made between the newest copyright and older copyrights?
Thanks!

My daughter is just about to finish up with AG. Any ideas on where to go from here or what else she needs to know? I know about the Reinforcement books. Is that enough?

I am using Chalkdust's algebra 1 program this year with my daughter. I am looking at putting her into a classical school next year that uses Saxon. In order for her to be placed into geometry, they are going to give her a saxon placement test.
Should I be concerned about the difference in scope and sequence between the two curriculums. I believe I have heard that Saxon does not have a separate geometry text and that it includes geometry throughout their algebra courses. Is she going to be missing a lot of geometry information and do poorly on the placement text due to their differences? I don't want her to get placed in Algebra 1 again just because she did not have geometry concepts down. Any ideas? Thanks!

Our whole family loves to go sledding or snow tubing. Eat snow slushies. Make snow angels. See who can find the longest or largest icicle. Drink hot apple cider. Look at the Christmas lights on all of the houses in December and January. I also really like to shovel snow.

I think I found it on my harddrive - I had it saved too. It's from 3 years ago? Does that sound right?
It definitely could be it - I just know that it was multiple years ago that she posted it. (I think) I remember that she had listed a "type" of speed reading that a professor had recommended to her. I believe that she also had listed several books that they had used and which ones she found the most useful. I think she also gave examples of their WPM goals and accomplishments. I know that I had saved it because I hoped to utilize the information in it when my kids were older, but I apparently haven't saved it in such a great place.

One more thought - I gal by the name of Carmen & Co (I think) wrote a very nice and detailed post several years ago about speed reading and what her and her son had used. It had lots of great information in it. I thought I had saved it, but I cannot seem to locate it. But maybe if you are more internet savy than me, it could be found in the old boards archives. HTH

My 12 and 10 year olds are having great luck with Speed Reading For Kids. They just started it a little over a week ago, and they are doing very well already.

Thank you for the fes.follett information. I was able to find ISBN numbers that are suppose to be for those courses. The thing that was throwing me off was when I would look up those ISBN numbers on other sites it would show the cover of the 1st grade course instead of the cover of the 7th grade first course. Well, anyhow I ordered one used. Hopefully it will be the older one instead of the younger kids one. Thanks again!

Does anyone know where to locate the ISBN numbers for the current edition of Vocabulary for Achievement put out by Great Source. I can only seem to locate the ISBN number for a pack of student books and it appears to be different from an individual book. Specifically, I am looking for course 1, 2, & 3 (which is equivalent to grades 7, 8, & 9).
Any ideas? I have e-mailed the company several weeks ago and they have not replied back.
Thanks!

I'd like to use Susan's book rather than the suggested Western Civilization text.
Do those of you familiar with Omnibus know of any reason this would not work?
I was wondering if you decided to go this route. I am looking into possibly going this route next school year and would love to hear if you or anyone else have started to make a plan.

Thanks Myrtle! I really appreciate your posts and the glimpses you share with us of your child's math schoolwork. It helps to keep us motivated.

She used a few of the middle school prompts which I believe are suggested for grades 6-8. They have prompts in different categories including: informative, literary, narrative, persuasive, and possibly one or two more.
The informative prompts that I remember include one about where you would like to live, one about being principal for a week, and one about designing your own dream city. The "where you would like to live" prompt went something like - Do you like city life, fast paced etc., or do you prefer more of a country atmosphere. Please write a multi-paragraph essay explaining which lifestyle you would choose and why. (Please note that these are my words, not the exact words of their writing prompt. I only saved our final copy.)
The informative writing prompts gave you a story or document to read and then write an essay about. I believe there is one about the Bill of Rights where you read each amendment and then write an essay about the rights you enjoy as a person. Another one was about rock climbing where you pretended to be writing an article for the school newspaper on rock climbing.
They had a several literary ones, but the only one I remember is about Lois Lowry's book The Giver. I do not remember what the prompt was about except that it was about what you thought about something that Jonas did.
Narrative prompts included writing multi-paragraph essays on being a bird for a day, a time machine (where would you go and what would you do), and getting home from the middle of nowhere (had something to do with how would you get home etc.)
The persuasive prompts had a lot do to with school situations - like banning books, school rules, pop machines, bullies, etc. I do not think that we ended up doing any of those.
Well, all of that to say, this was probably a year ago that we tried to use this so I do not know how much it has changed between now and then. And I do not know if the home version is different than the school.
Hope that gives you a little bit more information.

I do not have much knowledge about it, but my daughter used it briefly before we decided it didn't fit well with our schooling. Off the top of my head, these are two things that I remember 1)most of the writing prompts were creative writing assignments and 2) "it" did not like the spelling of a lot of the proper nouns my daughter used used in her assignments and therefore she received a lower grade if she did not change them to a name that "it" liked. I do not know if they list sample prompts on their website, but I can try to dig up a couple of the ones she completed if you are interested. HTH

I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of this information. I have one more quick question if you do not mind. Did you find that the work was grade appropriate i.e. 6th grade book challenging enough for 6th grader or was it too hard or easy. Thanks again.

Thank you for your response. I have been looking for a vocab program that I like and that my kids will actually show retention in instead of being just busy work. I had never heard of this one, but it sounds promising. I appreciate your recommendation from another post and look forward to trying this one soon.

Wondering what a good wpm goal would be to aim for by the start of high school? Thanks!

Anyone care to share any of their favorite movies from United Streaming. Any age group or subject is fine - I have got kids in all age groups. I am hoping to make better use of this fun resource. Thanks!

Saw your recommendation for this, but since there don't seem to be any online samples available, I can't tell if the Teacher's Manual is at all helpful or even necessary. What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

Here is a free site. http://www.mce.k12tn.net/reading17/giver.htm It looks pretty good for comprehension, vocabulary, and a few other activities.
