I am trying to decide between Rod and Staff and Analytical Grammar. English Grammar is NOT MY AREA! I mean NOT AT ALL...REALLY! So, if the kids have questions I need to be able to look at the book and figure it out or, better yet...have the Grammar so wonderfully explained in the books that they don't have a lot of questions..ha! This is for upper middle school, 6th ish.

Another Rod and Staff question, getting cold feet. For one who is NOT good in English Grammar, Composition, is Rod and Staff easy to teach?? I mean this is really, really not my area at all!!! So..if the kids have questions I need to be able to look at the book and easily be able to figure it out.

I have been going back and forth between wanting to do Rod and Staff and feeling like we should just do Analytical Grammar.

Hi,
If I have a 5th grader that has had NO formal grammar at ALL can they go into the 5th grade text for Rod and Staff? I had an email from someone who sells Rod and Staff that there is much review from 2ne to 5th but starting in 6th it gets much harder.

Is WWS for kids who have already been through a writing program? Or is it a beginning program?

I was also thinking AG w/ IEW SWI B. We are doing sequential spelling. I worry that AG will be "too much" as far as diagramming etc... He is not going to major in English, for sure, he wants to be a police officer or he wants to go into the military. Now..in saying that..I KNOW grammar and writing are important, I want him to be effective in communicating etc..etc..

I am basically wanting a guide for good books, comprehension etc...that can be a bit self directed. Is there something the kids can look at and it will say read Chp 1, then answer questions or write about it?

Ok, another question, I have read where Rod and Staff is independent, how is that and can I start it with a 6th grader if she has had no formal grammar, which book would I use? We use something else for spelling.

Boy...I am tired of trying to figure this out. I want a workbook approach. I usually don't start Grammar until later but would love a gentle approach using a workbook, mostly independent. Would like to use AAS for spelling but at this point I am tired, I am not doing well with trying to find vocabulary, spelling, writing, etc...
Would love some help.
Also..if I have a 6th grader who has not had formal grammar/writing would you do Hake Grammar and Writing Grade 5?

Langauge (Grammar and Writing) has been our weakness, probably because it is my weakness. We have not done a lot of formal anything and I have a 6th grader that I need to get going with. Since it is something I feel "weak" in what is a good "self-teaching" grammar/writing program?
I have considered:
Hake
Essentials in Writing
Analytical Grammar (they have teaching DVD's now)
Switched on Schoolhouse....
Please let me know what you think. I have also considered IEW SWI for writing but would really love a combined program if possible, that may not work so...
I also have an 8th grader that has struggled with this area, really hates writing at all and we need to step up his skills heading into High School.

I went to the liveops website, how exactly does it work? You do this from home? Are your hours set for you?? How much can you make if only working say 10 hours a week?

What is LiveOps?
Can't do daycare, live out in the country, no desire to do that. I did that once a long time ago and it just isn't my cup of tea.

Hmm....thank you for the ideas. Can't tutor in higher level Math or Science. Not real crafty, good at data entry type jobs, good at customer service skills :)

I would love to work from home. Just wanting to make a few extra dollars every few weeks, tired of "scraping" by. We live in a small town, rural area so not much out here. I still have 5 home that I am homeschooling so "going to a job" won't work right now. Any ideas?

OP: I appreciate very much you sharing....what spectrum books were/are you doing? I have just been looking at them and am confused. I have a child behind and ,I like your ideas!!
Are the spectrum books something you can just jump into...do they review a lot..basically our areAs are math and language.

I was looking at the Classic Curriculum from Mott Media but...by level 4 in the Writing Series they are only on the First Reader, I believe. My daughter would probably be in the 2nd reader maybe, she is reading at a 4th grade level?
It would be nice for reading comprehension and vocabulary, not necessarily reading instruction. I just would like some sort of workbook or something...ideas?

Oops, not enough said..ha! Does it teach pretty much everything except spelling? Dictionary skills etc..?
