  1. I am NOT at all implying that I only want to use something created by a PS Teacher, not in any way at all. I simply like to know about people, why they decided to do this, are they trained in Ortin-Gillingham (I am fascinated by this approach)...merely out of curiosity. I did not at all mean to stir anything up, nor am I assuming they are doing anything wrong. This is a busy time of year with the holidays.

Marie has always answered my emails and is a very nice person. I have asked her this question specifically and am waiting, not that it will matter but...if it is an Ortin Gillingham program I want someone who is trained in OG or at least has a lot of experience with it as this is an area I am not very confident and I am trying to decide between SWR, AAS and Barton.

I have used plenty of stuff from HS mom's who are simply sharing what they did with their own children and they are some of the best things!!!

There are a ton of positive reviews, tons! It is obviously a great program, I am just curious.....mainly.

I do not want to discourage anyone from using this product, I would never do that!

I apologize if this thread made anyone doubt their decision. I am prayerfully considering my options and did in no way mean for this to come across the wrong way.

  2. Well.. I have been trying to decide between AAS and SWR. I think I am leaning towards SWR but, will mainly be using it for spelling as the children I want to use it with are reading, at different levels.

Do you all use it exactly as it is, w/ the logs, etc... I had someone tell me once that if using it for spelling you just needed the WISE guide.

Now..I like using things as they are meant to be used BUT.. have several children to do this w/ have used SWR before and gave up. Since then...I always long to go back, I like that the rules are explained etc...

Anyway..just curious how you all use SWR, if you feel it still works as good if you don't do every little thing.

Why would you choose SWR over AAS?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi,

I am using Ray's Arithmetic and then will use Practical Arithmetic, I am using the Classic Curriculum workbooks and Developmental Math.

Is there a good book/dvd on the math facts "tricks". Like when adding 8 and 9 make the 8 a 7, add the one on to the 9 to make 10, making is 17. Stuff like that? I don't like just telling them to count up to this number, count 7 up, count 8 up. Does this make sense?

I like using these workbooks and don't want to change math programs, would just like some help w/ concepts etc..

    If that makes sense?

    Thanks!

  4. I didn't want my post to come across bad...wasn't sure how to ask, thank you for the link to the yahoo group. I was looking for one and couldn't find it!

They now have lesson plans, which looks amazing and seems to be an answer to a lot of things for me...just got worried when I started "reading" about these issues!!

Thanks so much for your posts...VERY HELPFUL!

  5. Hi,

Do any of you find that the VP materials have doctinal issues? Do their beliefs affect the materials? I do not disagree w/ the reformed view but..don't like when things are "highly" affected by personal beliefs or issues...

    Does this make sense?

I have some concerns w/ some things I have read, not about VP or the Detweilers but some who have written some of the materials.

Just wondering how the beliefs come across in the Bible Cards etc..

    Thanks!

  6. Hi,

I have two older daughters that I would love to do geography with BUT...time is limited. We have had very little "formal" geography and I really want something they can do on their own that would give them a good education in geography...workbook style, I know, I know. I love Charlotte Mason but the reality is...I sometimes need to use workbooks.

My girls are 7th and 8th grade....keeping in mind we really need a "beginning" geography course of some sort.

    Thanks!

  7. Hi,

I am trying to decide if I want to use the modern print, via Veritas Press and some other curriculums, or standard print in teaching my 4 year old. I like the looks of the modern and they say it is easier to transition to cursive but...not sure..it is pretty different.

Anyone use the modern print or slant print?

    Thanks!

  8. the Homeschool Tracker sounds great! Basically in my state we need to keep track of how many hours a year, that is pretty much it. Does it keep track of the hours "schooled"?

Thanks for all your input..this is great!

  9. Hi,

I am really need to keep better records. I struggle with being organized. What do you all use, I have 7 children....4 are actually being schooled, to keep records, what is the "easiest" thing to use..ha! Easy being key for me..ha!

  10. Hi,

I don't know why I have never seen this but I looked at the samples of Reading Made Easy and it looks really neat. I am looking for something as a gentle start w/ a 4 1/2 year old.

Anyone have experience with this program?

  11. Thank you all for your input. I have heard good things about LLATL and R & S. I keep hoping sonlight will work, not sure why...I think because they consulted Ruth Beechick but I just read where RB said she looked over it, offered suggestions, but had nothing to do w/ the actual rewriting of it and hasn't even seen the new LA so...

What to do? There are too many good options!

  12. Thanks for the link to the Donna Young site. I was on there the other day looking specifically for handwriting paper and couldn't find it for some reason...this is great!

I have also used the paper from RR mentioned and it is good also!!
