  1. Well..unfortunately I am out. I just tried to do their "sample" lessons and my computer does not download fast enough. So...I did get an email reply about how to pay and if everyone needs to start at the same time..

Well...good luck, looks like a really, really neat program....wish I could do it :glare:

You can determine how you want to pay.

One person can "collect" the monies from your group members, but only one person's credit card will be on file.

So, one person will have to be the responsible "bill to" person.

You can start at different times, as along as the last person starts before the August, 2012 cut-off date.

Also, the students can also start different history eras...they don't necessarily need to start the same program.

I hope this information is helpful!

  2. I am excited about it...I am not sure how to do this as we would have to pay w/ one credit card and we would need 10 people. I need to make sure it will work on my computer. We are out in the country, I don't have "high speed" but we don't have dial up either...our connection isn't the fastest. I will check that out although at one time I think I found out it would work!

One other thing, not sure if we will all have to have the same "start date"?

  3. **I am out...sorry, my computer is too slow :( ** Someone will need to be the "go to" person, see my last post...

This might be an odd question but I just got an email that if 10 or more sign up for their History Course they will drop it to $99 instead of $250.

Does anyone on here go together for group buys, our little homeschool group does not do VP!

  4. Okay..I printed out the sample and for example, under Geography (weekly overview) it says to Practice learning geographic terms. Does it tell you how to go about doing this?

I would not like that, I like very specific instructions, like get out your geography book, go to page ..... and do the assignment or whatever..

Does this make sense? TOG may not be for me...just curious, I love how it incorporates Bible/History etc....

  5. I would be using this w/ 6-14 year olds, 4 kids. Please tell me, is it as parent intensive as it looks? Also...does it have questions for the literature? Does it have "answer keys" or is this a "you must learn along w/ your kids" to know how to answer the questions? I read somewhere that you have to read the books to be able to ask your kids questions?

Just curious...I would love to do Sonlight or HOD but honestly cant see myself doing as many guides as I would need to to fit in all kids.

What all is covered in TOG and what else do you need to do, obviously Math and Grammar right?

Thanks in advance...just curious..I had a friend try this one year, she has a large family and she ended up w/ MFW and loved it. I am not doing MFW so...

Just trying to find a good fit other than trying to do so many subjects seperately, then they never get done :)

  6. I really appreciate everyones input here. So...the Y /E/ thing, if we have the sound of /E/ at the end of a syllable it should be an E because E says E at the end of a syllable? Soo...if we do the /i/ sound we can say we need a Y because English words don't end in I?

Seriously...I don't mean to keep up this drudgery but...I find this stuff very interesting and well...anyway, I know I have one son, older, who would greatly benefit from slowing down, having to mark words etc..because he does a lot of guessing and wanting to read "fast" and missing words, especially longer words.

  7. I use SWR and do not teach /E/ for Y. I explain to my dc that we say /E/ but we think /i/ in order to spell it correctly. If we think /i/, then we know it has to be Y, because English words do not end in I. OTOH, if we think /E/, then we have a multitude of spelling options, including E, EE, EA, and EY, and there are no rules out there to determine which one it is.

My dd has no problem with this explanation. We have to use the "think-to-spell" technique all the time in order to spell things correctly. (How many of you say /wed/-/nes/-/day/ every time you spell the word "Wednesday?") The Y as /i/ is just another example.

Thank you for this explanation, this makes sense to me! It is funny..when I spell February I think Feb RU (oo) Ary. So...I am a believer of the think to spell.

I have another question, I know when Y is used to say /E/ as in Baby the reason is there is a Y at the end of a multisyllable word or something like that...I just messed that up but does that not make sense also?

  8. Do you add the /E/ sound to Y, if so..how do you mark it? Also...what other sounds, I know AAS adds the /u/ sound to O, not sure I want to do that, it has been awhile since I read my SWR manual but..she had a good reason not to add that to the words come and some, I believe, maybe I am wrong.

Just curious...I am going to go against the grain and add the /E/ sound, I just can't believe that would hurt anything, especially for younger children.

    Thanks!

Hey Ellie...."SWR & AAS (spin offs), WRTR....MANUAL" "Spalding.....method"...how am I doing? tee hee!

  9. No, dear. Spalding starts with manuscript. :D

They're entitled. Remember that I'm the Spalding geek. If Spalding starts with manuscript, I start with manuscript. :D

    No worries. :D

OH BOY!! OKay get the WRTR out of my head and put SPALDING in :banghead:

WRTR is the MANUAL...SPALDING is the METHOD, WRTR is the Manual...SPALDING is the METHOD!!

  10. THANK YOU for that link, that is very helpful. Wow...now I will know how to spell sergeant..ha! That is great.

Okay..now I need to decide which one to use, WRTR of SWR....oh boy, since I own WRTR I can get started w/ it. Does anyone have "schedules" they care to shart for multiple age students?

Thanks a bunch! Thank you Ellie, I appreciate your time. I can't believe I am back to looking at these, I have "quit" SWR more times than I care to mention because I try to do everything written and when I couldn't seem to make sense of the manual...well...it was frustrating to say the least but I am always drawn to Spalding and how she did things, it just has ruined any other approach I try..ha!

    Kim

  11. Okay...so...how does Spalding use the finger spelling, I did not understand that?

Also..I know that WRTR :)....do both the 4th and 5th editions have the spelling lists?

I really just want to use it for spelling w/out the language aspect of grammar/writing etc..

    Kim

  12. Okay..see...I complicated SWR WAY TOO MUCH!! Do you all do the finger spelling in WRTR? How do they know which phonogram to use if you don't?

With younger children, I have WRTR 4th and 5th Edition, do you just start teaching the phonograms and have them learn to write them, then when their writing takes off start the lists?

This is one reason why I didn't want to use it for my younger son as he is chomping at the bit to read but his writing is not as good, he is still learning to write.

    Kim

  13. Okay,

I was all set to do AAS, I love the "idea" of SWR but just can't get my head wrapped around the manual...I really need a structured lesson plan.

I also am going to use the /E/ sound for Y but...I like how the WISE Guide is set up w/ spelling lists etc..for a struggling older speller verses going through level after level of AAS

If you had an older struggling speller, 6th grade level, an 8 year old...loves to write but needs to get busy w/ a formal spelling program and younger ones learning to read...what would you use?

    Thanks!

  14. My daughters are at a point where they are needing a math calculator? My oldest, 17, went to take her practice GED test, did great except in math. She always got great grades in math but they told her she needed to use a math calculator and timed the math test. Well...she did not pass because she is not used to using a calculator.

    Can you all recommend one?

    Thanks!

  15. I emailed Denise asking her what age group this curriculum would be for as I have a six year old boy, this is what she said:

    Dear Kim,

The Logic of English Essentials curriculum was written for students 8 years old and up who struggle with reading or spelling. That said, it can be used with younger students. If you scroll down to the downloads section on the following page

    http://www.logicofenglish.com/store/featured/pre-order-essentials-curriculum

You will find a link for Sample Schedules. This will help you know how to use the program with all of your students.

    Sincerely,

    Denise Eide
