  1. I've finally worked in science. I ended up having to switch curriculum. My original science choice was BORING. Now we've managed to do it 2 weeks in a row. I call that progress.

Artistic Pursuits..... and I have art/craft loving kids.

I know I should be ashamed of myself..... but I can't seem to consistantly do the scheduled read alouds from Adventures in My Father's World. We're like a week and a half behind but I'm trying to catch up. Our modified state study (which my 2 dd love) takes up alot more time than expected.

  2. I also posted a thread about maps recently. I was seeking a complete map program, something that would give me modern maps in addition to historic maps. I did not find it and I don't think such a thing exists. Wonder Maps says there are 60+ world maps, which basically screams out that there is not a map of every country (which I want, not just regional modern maps). Map Trek has 270 maps but I get the impression that most of those are historic.

I am looking to buy one of these for history and would love to hear comparisons. For modern maps, I am thrilled to have found National Geographic's MapMaker.

Such a great resource. Great for modern day maps. I still would like historic maps though but this is awesome.

  3. I am looking for a complete map collection for our school year next year. We will be studying countries and their cultures for then 1st and 3rd grade. I see both of these resources as being great.

    WonderMaps by Bright Ideas Press

Map Trek: Book and CD-Rom $55

    WonderMaps download $50

I have found coupon codes in Home School Enrichment Magazine that would make either purchase about $40, so cost variation is not an issue. I need a set of maps that I can use for years, easy to customize and user friendly. I need someone to help me weight the pros and cons of each. Thanks in advance.

  4. We are currently using Adventures. I have the newest edition TM which DO NOT have any student sheets, state cards or anything. I bought this set of notebooking pages http://www.currclick.com/product_info.php?products_id=30950 instead of the student pages from MFW.

They also don't have the state pages but I use these pages instead. They're free and they really are useful. http://www.squidoo.com/50statesnotebook

I have also found these to be useful

You can find almost anything for free/cheap on the internet. I wouldn't buy the student pages, but that's up to you and how much extra work you want to put into planning and preparing.

  5. I also have a scotch laminator. I make ALOT of file folder games and it gets the job done. It's a good value and I can't afford to buy a nice, pricey model but I do appreciate what I have. I have only bought the Scotch laminating pouches, so I don't know personally how the universal preform in the machine.

  6. My dd5 will be in 1st grade next year. This year we are doing A Beka and she hates it. She is bored out of her mind. She is a "Wiggle Willie" who loves stories and hands-on stuff but also likes a worksheet every now and then. We have several file folder games that I have made that she likes doing. I need a phonics and reading curriculum thats practically open and go and that meets her needs. She has caught on to reading pretty good and I don't want to bore her and make her hate school more than she already does. I know I suggested AAS/AAR and LLATL. They have caught my eye and I can't decide between the two but I also want to know if there isn't another curriculum out there that I haven't heard of or considered. I need help, ladies. Thanks in advance.

  7. I thought I'd use God's Design for science series.....TOTAL BUST!

I know what I'm going to finish the year out with but for next year I'll have a dd 3rd grader (with little science understanding) and a dd 1st grader. What I'm looking for:

*Nice blend of reading and experiments but not extremely one or the other.

*Be able to use with both dd

    *Life Science

    *Easy experiements

*Experiments that have easy-to-find items or comes with a kit

    *Notebooking

    *Flexible

*Book list (optional) for more in-depth study

*Preferrably a Creationist view, but no evolution talk.

Surely there is something out there that will work for us. I will totally appreciate your comments and advice.

  8. Ok, Next year I will have a 3rd grader and a 1st grader. We will be studying countries and cultures for history/geo next year. My problem is... I already own (it was a gift) Trail Guide to World Geography (TGTWG) and it looks like fun BUT I read that Galloping the Globe is more appropriate for their age range. So now the question is: do I make TGTWG more age appropriate or do I bite the bullet and buy GTG? ...OR would it be best if I buy Expedition Earth from Confessions of a Homeschooler? I love them all but not the funds to buy them and see for myself. I need your help!

    Thanks in advance!

  9. We are only in Week 7 in Adventures but enjoying it. We also don't do the suggested La or math. I hear alot of moms say they really dislike the 1 state a day theme near the end but we plan to highlight 1 per region every week and learn about that state and make a mini notebook.

I also didn't buy the packaged student pages from mfw. I purchased the whole curriculum used --minus the sheets. I bought them here. http://www.currclick.com/product_info.php?products_id=30950

They seem to be working so far. Hope that helps.

  10. No concrete plans for next year as of yet. I'll have a 3rd grader and a 1st grader. I'm still working out the kinks but definite plans will be made about March-ish.

    Subjects together:

History: Trail Guide to World History

    OR Galloping the Globe

OR Expedition Earth (by Confessions of a Homeschooler)

Science: Interest Led at the moment

Other than that...... I'm still working praying about that. I may buy a book on learning styles. I have a wiggle worm of a Kindy right now and we've used A Beka with the oldest, but I think it'll tank with the younger child.

  11. I'm already planning for the 2012-2013 school year. Sick, I know. I have dd who will be in the 3rd grade. I love the idea of her doing some work independently, like language arts and math (science, history/geography will be done together with dd 1st grader). She is an independent child and I am so tired of the teacher dependent A Beka curriculum. BLAH!

Now I'm not delusional and think that she's going to automatically take over starting at day 1. I'm thinking gradually through the year she will do something on her own here and there until eventually I can hand the book to her and she do it on her own. But my problem is..... what curriculum will meet my needs? I am intrigued by the idea of living books and copywork but I also want her to learn grammar, spelling and so on but dd loves hands-on learning. PLEASE help. I need some kind of direction.

Language Arts and Math? Your thoughts, ladies?

  12. Not as much as I wanted to buy BUT......

American Girl books and mini-dolls (I have 2 girls)

    Garden Flowers Coloring Book

Great Colonial Projects you can build yourself (book)

    Animals: A Visual Encyclopedia

    Mother Goose Rhymes (book)

    Monopoly --Junior edition game

    Charlotte's Web

    Scrabble Slam Card Game

I limited my kids to 1 toy each and the rest of their presents will be games, books and DVDs. It worked out so much better this way!

  13. We're using Adv in MFW this year. For some reason I'm having a hard time getting used to the TM. So we are taking longer than a week to do a "scheduled" week. I have a 2nd grader and tag-along Kind. The notebooking has been hard for me to implement too. We are about to start the Jamestown week. Will you please link me to what you're talking about, The "Jamestown Toobs"? That sounds really interesting. I love hands-on stuff. I don't mind taking more time that they suggest in the TM as long as they get the material and are having fun.

  14. I love Honey for a child's heart. Ms. Hunt is much more concerned about family time and good quality reading while the read aloud handbook seems to worship at the alter of the almighty test score. I've read 3/4 of the book so I feel I gave it a good chance.

I personally was very put off by the read aloud handbook. BUT I highly recommend Honey for a Child's Heart. I love her choice of books and the language she uses talking about her beloved favorites.

  15. This is my 6th year of teaching AWANA. I've always been a SPARKS teacher. I have a 2 Sparks. I no longer have a cubby (right now). We enjoy the program. It's just always a challenge to get parents involved. ESPECIALLY when the family is NOT homeschoolers. It's sad. And I'm not saying all public school parents shoo me away when telling how our club meeting went. I'm just saying all MY student's parents have. :(

  16. I don't have the time to cut, laminate and then cut again. I laminate and then cut it out. I have the cheap Scotch brand (with Scotch pouches) and I haven't had a problem with them.

Although, I agree about the water thing. One of my children put them pieces in their mouth..... well, it wasn't pretty.
