I can't believe how much I've spent in gas recently-- now it costs about $50 to fill the minivan tank, and that lasts less than one week for us. Now I am trying to conserve on the driving I do, but still I feel the need to get to the activities we do (math club, art school, music lessons, etc). Anyone else wondering what they should do differently about driving?

Well, this is any easy post! I'm glad I'm not "just visiting" anymore-- since I think I've been around the boards for a good seven years or so! That's a long visit...

We don't buy that much red meat but I have this feeling that quality protein is very important to growing children, so we do splurge every so often. Also, I like the taste of a good steak! We probably have red meat about once a week, but mainly fish, chicken, pasta, beans, and things like that.

We've used them with young students-- actually even in third grade. I agree that the World History series was probably the biggest hit, but you can find others that match the child's interest level. In our case, my dd loved the Great Books of the Western Literary Tradition, selected essays, after we have previewed or read the book in question (Bronte, Mark Twain, All Quiet on Western Front, etc). So you may not want to watch every lecture in a given series, but pick and choose the ones of interest.
Another big hit was the Art History series, which would be the new Art Across the Ages, and the History of European Art, and History of French Impressionism. These were quite interesting for even younger viewers (remember there may be a scene or two of artistic nudity, but that doesn't bother us).

My recipe is the world's simplest-- one package of dried lentils, put into a crockpot with six cups of water and some chicken boulion cubes. Six hours later, soup is ready!
My kids will eat it... but I think I like it more than they do!

The Middlebury program during the summer is the same one that CTY is now promoting, for sixth grade to ninth, I believe. Looks very nice! But it is not at Middlebury-- I believe it is held at another school.

I like the new boards! They are interesting to read, and easy to navigate. Thanks, Susan and company!

I like the Oxford Latin and Cambridge Latin series-- the information on Latin grammar is relatively short, the readings are interesting, and the background on Roman life is very interesting. Good for adults who want something interesting and not too grammar-oriented...

We've used many of the courses, simply as supplements. In particular, I recommend the History of Us, Art Across the Ages, Great Ideas of Classical Physics, Scientific Biography (story of doctors), and the Great Books of Wester Literature. We also liked the Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, and other history titles.
Other good ones were the High School World History, Chemistry, Study Skills. Soon we will watch the High School Geometry series.
See if your library has them first, and you can see whether this is a good style to learn from. They are good supplements!

I've purchased the Teaching Company's Biology series, which looks excellent and very detailed, but we haven't started to watch it yet (next year we are planning to study biology). Here is a link, but you can perhaps get it from the library:

We've got two kids, one in 8th grade, one in 6th. Busy homeschooling them from day one. Today, for instance, my ds age 13, is at the science center, a teen docent for the Bodies Exhibit, and my dd, age 11 is in a chess tournament, followed by basketball game. Fun Saturday for us!

This coming summer, for example, we will probably do a music camp (Suzuki Violin Institute), art camp (locally), science camp (tissue engineering day camp), and a three week residential camp for my oldest (CTY). They are fun, and good experiences for us-- now that our kids are ages 11 and 13...

You're right, Sharon, now I have to look into all that signature stuff. Modern Times!

That is just terrific, Nadia. Congratulations!

We had some school but the college class my son is taking was canceled for the holiday, so it was a half day of sorts...
