  1. Today I spent 1.5 hours organizing and decluttering DD8's room. She basically had been cleaning her room by taking everything off the floor and sticking it on whatever horizontal surface she could find. She is also a PROLIFIC crafter/artist/writer and never sorted any of her creations. Now she has storage for all of her craft supplies and papers and I hope that she can keep her room neat, (crosses fingers) but it wouldn't surprise me if we had to do this again in about six months. Like mother, like daughter. :p

  2. Not exactly a list of what, but where...I loooove Target's dollar bins, and Michael's has some really cute $1 kids crafts. Also, I don't know if there is one in your area, but JoAnn's has a GREAT selection of inexpensive goodies by the front register. IMHO the stuff you can get from these places is quite a bit higher quality than Dollar Tree.

  3. I intend to use field trips, co-ops and enrichment classes for the 'fun' factor. I hope to make the kids' school-time at home enjoyable and interesting, although I'm sure there will be days when they (or I) will not find it so. BTW, I think the summer is a great time to explore unit studies and interesting topics without the feeling that we are getting 'off track'. We are spending this summer studying Native Americans, a topic that gets little attention in the US History curriculum we will be using in the fall. We are studying a tribe from each region of the country in depth and doing arts, crafts, foods, etc. We are having fun and will probably do an in-depth unit study or two every summer.

  4. Man, I wish I'd known about this a couple months ago! Does it cover US History up to modern times?

EDIT: OK I saw the Table of Contents and realized it doesn't...that would've been great if it did- I have a huge history gap to fill for our studies next year!

  5. Just wanted to get some opinions, especially from CC community members and tutors. We are new to classical education in general, and next year will be our first doing CC. I still am not really sure exactly how I am to practice the memory work with the kids.

But I indicated at a meeting that I was interested in tutoring (albeit preschoolers, whom I have extensive experience with) and I was recently asked if I would tutor 8 and 9 year olds.

The compensation would be nice. I do enjoy teaching, but feel a small amount of trepidation at tackling something that I know so little about. I do know that I will receive some training.

Anyone here tutor their first year in CC and how did that work out?

    Thanks for your responses.

  6. I'm using Peter Marshall's Light and the Glory for Children series plus any good living books I can find (NONE of the libraries in my area carry ANY of the D'Aulaire books!) Also, I found this neat 3D interactive map craft book on Amazon for geography, plus I plan on purchasing Geography Scribe and History Scribe for notebooking pages. (www.historyscribe.com) This is an incredible resource that includes all eras of history and geography for very little money.

Oh yeah, I plan on showing Liberty's Kids as well. Add all this to all the CC history memory work and I think it's sufficient for a 6 and 7 year old.;)

  7. A while back, I realized I was just going to have to cultivate an interest in his activities. He enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons (Nerd!) so I got into it. I wound up having fun. He loves Rush (the classic rock band) so we go to concerts when they are on tour. I have even gone so far as to learn a little game design (hence the name) so we can discuss his work. I don't really enjoy playing the kind of games he plays, but I like to watch him. I don't expect him to take an interest in my activities and that's okay. Although he has mentioned that one day he'd like us to take dance lessons.

Other than that, it's the bookstore and watching TV. Once or twice a year we go see a broadway musical or go spend the night somewhere.

OH yeah, as a family we are all going to take Tae Kwon Do classes. Hubby and I are really excited about that.

  8. :bigear:

Actually, this is the main issue I'm confronted with as I'm considering enrolling dd7 and ds 6 in CC next year. I've fallen in love with TruthQuest History, which begins with American History for 1st-2nd grade, and want to use it next year. Would my dc be permitted to start with Cycle 3 and then go back and do Cycles 1 and 2?

  9. Have you ever heard of the Ultimate Field Trip? We were going to do this in 2009 before dh lost his job. It's a national get together of sorts for homeschoolers at Disney World, which takes place for one week every September. It is sponsored by 3D Travel Company, which is run by homeschoolers and exclusively works with Disney vacations. What's great is the packages are extremely reasonable, and you get the FREE dining plan with your package...PLUS all kinds of extra activities and goodies during the week. The only downside is that it is only for one week. Visit www.theultimatefieldtrip.com for more information.

    Have fun!

  10. Your general ped. may already be familiar with PANDAS and prescribe antibiotics. If these symptoms came on suddenly and on the heels of strep definitely look into that.

This happened to my dd 7 last fall. She has also always been a bit 'off' as you put it, but nothing too serious. However, around her 7th bday she developed SEVERE OCD symptoms within 2 weeks- washing hands every 5 minutes until they bled, irrational fear, to the point where she couldn't get into her bed to go to sleep at night. She became very irritable and moody and would scream at her brothers if they barely touched her. It was a very difficult time.

Our family had been ill around the time she began exhibiting the OCD although she only ever complained of a slightly sore throat. I researched online and discovered PANDAS, took her to her ped. who had already treated several cases. He prescribed antibiotics and at the end of the ten days her symptoms improved about 50%. It took three months for her to get back to 100% normal (for her). In the meanwhile, we did our due diligence and saw a neurologist, who stated she did not have PANDAS and recommended she see a psychologist. We did not do so immediately, preferring to wait and see if she improved, which she did.

That is to say, I would try antibiotics first and wait a while to see if she improves before taking her to a psychologist. Our ped even said that sometimes it takes two rounds of antibiotics and six months for the child to return to normal.

Good luck and I will say a prayer for your dd- it's stressful to see your child so drastically change like that.

  11. My ds 6 is an Aspie and lives in an alternate reality where he has all the rights and priveleges of an adult.:001_huh: We are still working to bring him down to earth. I admit I've lost my patience quite a few times, but I am trying to concentrate on showing him the consequences of a wise vs. a foolish choice. Interestingly many of the responses in this thread sound very much like the Love and Logic method (www.loveandlogic.com) which we are trying to implement in our home. It uses mostly natural and logical consequences and allows children to take responsibility for their actions rather than nagging, coaxing and intimidating children into compliance, but it has been difficult for me as I am naturally an impatient person and was not parented well myself.

Anyhow you might look into it for your 11 yo ds. I feel it has some good phrases to use to prevent the situation from deteriorating into a battle.

    good thread!
