  1. I read that book, too, last year. I read some of it aloud to my dc. Maybe we should go through it again. Thank you all for the responses. It sure helps to know that I'm not alone. Keep them coming.
  2. I am at my wit's end. My dd (almost 9) dislikes being wrong so much that if I need to teach her or correct her about any subject, she is blatantly disrespectful and/or disobedient. She has always been this way, but it seems to be getting worse. She doesn't do what I am telling her to do. She talks over me when I'm trying to explain something. She refuses to look or listen when I'm teaching. Her goal seems to be to just say, "I know, I know..." until I leave her alone. I just don't see how I can teach her. Please, tell me what I can do.
  3. Those are good ideas. Letting her correct her test would help, but I might have to watch her correct it b/c she is so ashamed of getting something wrong that she might not be honest. Dictation also might work. I will look into the workbooks/curricula that some of you mentioned also. Thanks for the responses. It's good to have some new ideas!
  4. She's actually a great speller. The main problem is perfectionism; she cannot handle getting anything wrong. :crying:
  5. Has anyone else had a bad experience with Spelling Power or had to tweak it? I have only heard good things over the years. I encourage her to study ahead, so I guess I'll just have to really stay on her about that. It's the only thing I can think of.
  6. Hey, DD (almost 9) and I cannot seem to get through spelling without yelling or crying. Spelling Power is the worst. (Though it's perfect for DS.) We tried doing Spelling City online for awhile, but she didn't like it, and I wasn't confidant that she was really learning, even though we were using the lists from SP. The workbooks we've tried in the past were super easy for her. I'm not opposed to workbooks, but I'd need one with a placement test or something like that. Any suggestions? Jessica
  7. Well, I have the answer key, of course, but how do you manage to explain *why* something is correct or incorrect? I found myself just saying it either does or doesn't sound right, and that wasn't helpful to my kids... :(
  8. Anyone? Or do any of you use the original Wordly Wise and do not have that problem? If so, tell me what we're doing wrong!
  9. Has anyone else found this to be true? We haven't gotten very far in these new books (Book 1), but just in 1B, we've run into lots of problems. I'd say that most (not all!) of them I could do on my own, but that doesn't mean I can explain to my kids why each sentence is correct or incorrect. It's more things I just know from having heard them in context over the years. The crazy thing is that I did these same wordly wise books when I was in elementary school, and I think I did well... Help!?!?!?
  10. Hey, I've looked and looked and don't see the printable time line figures on the Yahoo group. Can you tell me where they are? I looked in files, photos, database, and searched messages. Also, I wanted to use index cards for the memory cards and the time line. Would 4x6 be a good size? The 5x8 are SO big, and 3x5's look too small. In the introduction, the author says to use a 2" or 3" 3-ring binder for the notes and activities, etc. Could we start out with a 1" since binders are so expensive this time of year (I already have some 1" ones), or will they fill up really fast? Thanks so much!
  11. Thanks for the tips! I had forgotten about the online library resources. What about Glossary.com? We ended up there because we could not find "Table of Nations" on the library's encyclopedia or dictionary sites.
  12. Hi, It seems that there's always some research to do, and we often can't make it to the library. When we look things up on the internet, at the very least, the first page is filled with results from wikipedia, yahoo answers and the like. What are some trustworthy resources on the internet that we could use? Do I need to get a subscription to an online encyclopedia, or is there a good free one? Any other ideas, suggestions? Thanks!
  13. Thanks! I found it where you said it would be. :001_smile:
  14. Hey. My dc are in 3rd and 4th grades. I was under the impression that there was a list of supplemental books in the appendix - books listed to go along with each week of study. I see it in the preview of the contents, and I remember seeing one that my friend has. But she only has Vol. 2. We got used to having "Book Basket" from MFW, and we have even continued it with SOS. We're just used to (and look forward to) having library books to go along with what they're learning. Thanks!
  15. Would someone mind giving me the names of a few of the supplemental books for the first lesson or two from MOH, Volume 1? I just ordered it last night, and I'd love to already have some books from the library when (or before) we get it in the mail. :) Thanks!
  16. Thanks! I just added the Singapore word problem book to my order. Anyone else want to chime in before I place my orders? I'm hoping to get started next week. :)
  17. We have been using SOS this year and have decided that we're going to stop wasting our time. It's way too easy for my 3rd and my 4th grader. They have hardly learned anything. So after a week or two of heavy research, here is what I've come up with: 1. MOH Vol. 1 with Historical and Bible Atlases and Reproducible CD-rom. -Is that all I'll need, or is there anything else that we just can't do without? I really think they'll like this and learn a lot. 2. Apologia Astronomy with 2 Journals and one lab kit from Home Science Tools (http://www.hometrainingtools.com/astronomy---science-kit/p/AM-KTASTR/). 3. Junior Analytical Grammar - My 4th grader is WAY behind in grammar, and I thought this would be a nice 11 week way of getting him on track. My 3rd grader is advanced, so I think she can handle it. 4. Spelling Power - Dd doesn't like it, but I may let her study ahead of time. We couldn't find anything we really liked that looked challenging. Ds likes it. 5. Wordly Wise Book 1, Original - My plan was to have them start this in the fall, but they are begging me to order it now. 6. Writing Strands, Vol. 3 - I'm not in a hurry to do this, but we could do a little every week or so. I don't see many good reviews, but the one copy we have looks good. 7. Math U See - We are already using it, and it works well for us. :) What I would love to hear is if you either love or truly dislike any of the above. I did lots of research, but I'll take any last minute advice! Also, does this sound like it will all work well together? I know it sounds heavy on the language arts, but I think we will go at as slow a pace as we need to.
  18. Ok, what about young earth science options for 4th & 5th graders? What do you and your kids really love? I thought I was going to go with Apologia but am not crazy about all the busy work that the sample pages show. I know experiments are important, but I'm not up for crafts and such as far as science goes. :001_huh: Thanks!
  19. What did you decide? I am thinking about using BF or MOH.
  20. In MTC, are there question pages or anything like that as there are in GWG? I don't see any in the sample pages. (BTW my last unanswered question ended up on page 1...) Thanks!
  21. I just realized we already have a copy of levels 3 & 4 of Writing Strands. What do you all think about those? So we could use that, SWO, and choose a grammar that suits us... Does that sound reasonable, or more complicated and time consuming than it needs to be? We're talking 4th & 5th grades. Also, is there anything good that would be a remedial type thing that would just take a couple months? Ds is behind in grammar, I'm afraid. I'd like to have him be on track for the ITBS and also to be on grade level for next year. Thanks again!
  22. Is it correct that Advantage Grammar only comes as an e-book? SWO = Spelling Workout? I actually like that one a lot for spelling, and you reminded me that it has good vocab in it. But it looks like I'd something else for grammar and writing instruction, right? Thanks!
  23. We actually did MFW Adventures and ECC. I'd say I had a love/ hate relationship with it. I might be tempted to try it again, but I'm hoping there's something out there that will suit us better. I am thinking (for now;)) that we will piece it together, using MOH as our history and adding on other subjects separately. I am trying to figure out though - in MOH, does it give scripture references to read that goes along with the lessons, or does it just cover the Biblical themes in the text? I would love to use MOH as our Bible also.
