  1. Are the autumn and spring themes the same each year? We were contemplating going in Sept. but the government/revolution theme isn't going to correlate to our studies very well. However I see that this past spring the theme centered more on domestic life. Does anyone know if the themes repeat so that this will be the theme again for the spring 2012 session? Or do they change each time?

  2. Sorry for the delayed update, we were out all day and came home to no internet connection.

Surgery was postponed. They are having difficulty regulating Peter's sugar. They had a more in depth meeting with the neurosurgeon and the tumor is baseball size with a large solid mass surrounded by a significant liquid area. The surgeon feels it is in a "good place" that provides straightforward access. He feels that it is most likely benign, thank goodness, and expects there may be some minor paralysis due tot he surgery but is very hopeful that it will be temporary.

Thank you all again for your continued prayers! I will update as soon as I know the new surgery time, they are hoping for a slot today or tomorrow morning.

  3. I just spoke with Peter's wife. The back story is that he has been displaying cognitive issues increasingly for the past 6 weeks. Over the past two weeks he has been late several times due to taking the wrong freeway or exit, he has been making an increasing number of mistakes at work (they work at the same place) and he has outright forgotten to pick up one of their boys at karate practice. Sometime last week she discovered that he had been forgetting to take his diabetes medication and she has had to nag him to do so the past several days. (He is non-insulin dependent and up to this point very healthy. You wouldn't look at him and think there were any health issues.) She felt that perhaps the cognitive issues were diabetes related and made an appointment to take him to his doctor next week. On Saturday she felt that he was very lethargic. On Sunday he went to work but she was so uneasy that she felt the need to follow him there, and when she arrived found him perplexed and unable to set-up or work equipment that he has been using for years. She took him to the ER where they first tested his sugar which proved to be high but not through the roof. They did scans and found a minimum 5cm mass in his frontal lobe, I believe she said right side. There is significant inflammation in his brain so he was put on medication to reduce this and then the scans need to be repeated. At that point the neurosurgeon will determine the course of action and the surgery will be scheduled. Right now they are forecasting tomorrow at the earliest.

They boys do not know what is happening yet, she had sent them to spend the night at a friend's yesterday, so she will be telling them this evening.

Thank you all for your continued prayers!!!

  4. We received a message from our best friends in CA that they are at the hospital. The husband, Peter, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. They are scheduling surgery, most likely for tomorrow. These friends were our family when we lived there and had none in the area. They helped us do all the planning for our wedding and later also for our son's dedication. They have two young boys. I am awaiting more info and searching for flights as the baby and I may fly out to help as soon as tomorrow. I will update when I have more information. Whatever prayers you can offer are more than appreciated!

Update - Surgery scheduled for 11am PST today - Wednesday. Thank you for your continued prayers!

  5. My dh is Latino so although I'm not that fair skinned my children are darker than I am. When dd was a few months old the manager at a local craft store came down an aisle toward me loudly cooing, "Ooh she's so beautiful! Where did you get her?" I was taken aback and stammered out, "She's mine." The woman reassured me, "Of course dear, grows in your heart and all that. But where did you get her from?" After I firmly stated that she is my biological child the woman look incredulous and walked away, only to return a few minutes later to explain that, "There was a just one of those Asian families in here. That's why my mind was going that way. Of course now that I see her from this side she looks exactly like you!"

  6. This is what we do as well. Well, we try our best with an interfering Granny who decided our son was missing out on a vital part of childhood not knowing the ABC song. Throw in a well meaning (but exasperating) Music Together teacher who thought it was a great idea to end every class with that song and guess what the first thing my son sang to his baby sister was? Ugh! At least ds listened when I later explained why we wanted to wait to teach her that one and has concentrated on other songs ever since.

  7. When we lived in a warmer climate we often saw panhandlers drive away at the end of the day in vehicles that we could never afford. Every once in a while there would be an article in the paper about some reporter that tried his or her luck at it in popular areas and came away with $200 to $400 a day all week. We would offer a meal if we thought the person was truly in need, but otherwise we just said a prayer and went on our way.

  8. My son is not quite six and I expect him to respond to greetings, make eye contact, shake hands and offer something akin to "nice to meet you" when leaving. He knows to answer "small talk" questions from the interested party at the time of greeting, but I don't expect him to have a full conversation and he is never outside of either mine or dh presence so this is all done under supervision. He is a talker though and a full conversation isn't out of the ordinary. We do remind him that he is not to speak with anyone and especially not give any personal information without us, but hey, he is only five hence the strict supervision.

  9. I don't carry an open top purse but I do put my purse in the cart, with the toddler usually on my back I just can't carry the purse too and shop efficiently. Sometimes I use a belt pack but if I have a purse I use the cart's buckle for the child seat to strap it in. I wind it through the purse straps a couple of times and buckle it. Anyone trying to take my purse or get the wallet out would have quite the time of it. It does make answering my cell phone before it goes to voicemail pretty impossible, but my cash and cards are safer.

  10. I would chat with the other mom, too. No need for two potato salads, or what if they are only doing deli platters and then you have made the only hot entrée and all 250 guests want a share? If your daughter's idea of what pulled pork is doesn't match yours (and ours) then perhaps she needs to describe what she wants more fully so you can figure out what she is actually talking about. If it isn't that big a deal to her then perhaps you could coordinate with the other family so that you take care of "appetizers", like veggies trays and chips and dip, while they provide the main entrée. What about plates, napkins, utensils? Are these being provided or do you need to coordinate to have the same style?

If you are going to make the cake yourselves I would suggest purusing this blog entry (I have no affiliation but use these same techniques) and especially practice doing a crumb coat on a cake beforehand. Another idea may be to use fondant, but again, she would have to practice beforehand.

I wouldn't worry about icing the salads unless you live in a particularly hot climate. I would think they would be fine for the few hours if set out well chilled. Most likely they will be gone before the last hour and/or the guests at that point will have already eaten - even those coming from other parties will probably only want a pice of cake.

Your decoration ideas sound great. Have you considered making a banner with a picture of your daughter from each year growing up? Or how about setting up a digital frame that can cycle through the pictures? If you or a relative doesn't have one I see them quite often on Freecycle so you could try there.

Congratulations to both you and your daughter!

  11. Do you have any friends that your pets can stay with for the duration of the visit? Maybe leave a day early so that you could do some mopping and dusting to try to cut down on the dander in the air, and maybe run an air purifier? I wouldn't usually suggest farming out members of the family like this, but this seems like a rare and special situation since you are willing to buy furniture and erect walls so I thought I would throw it out there.

  12.

(I don't know how to type tildes)

    Kelly

On my Mac I hold down the option key and type the letter I want to put an accent mark over, then retype only the letter. This works for tildes ñ as well as accent marks over é, an umlaut over a ü, etc. Easy peasy, which is good because my surname has an accent mark.

PCs are more difficult. You have to know the numerical code for the accent mark you want to type, then hold down the alt key while entering the code. For a tilde it is evidently 164.

  13. Can you find a basic plan you like that has an extra bedroom in the space you are talking about, and have an architect redraw just that part of the plan to turn the space into the mudroom/utility room you are looking for? Maybe a guest suite or master bedroom with an attached bathroom planned so the plumbing plans would be already set or easy to modify. Just a thought.
