  1. We have Hyper Dash and my kids love it. Our handset broke shortly after having it and I have to give a plug for the company's great customer service because they replaced it, no questions asked! (of course, in the mean time, our orange little cup disappeared, but we're still holding out hope for it's reappearance!)

  2. With our newspaper we go through a little game every fall. I renew for a year at a time, so in the fall they send me a bill with a price of over $200 for everyday delivery for a year. I then let the subscription expire because I refuse to pay that much for the newspaper.

A few days after the subscription runs out, they call me offering me the paper for 1/2 price for 13 weeks. I tell them that if they can offer it to me at that price for the whole year I'll do it - never fails - I get the newspaper seven days a week for half price for a whole year.

The next year we play the game again - I've been doing this for 10 years or so. I got the new bill for this year a few weeks ago and they decided to finally quit playing the game - the bill came for one year at half price. I was almost disappointed!

  3. I don't know how old your son is and this may sound stupid, but have you changed the kind of pencil he is using. My 7 yods and 11 yods both had fairly decent handwriting last year and this year it disappeared. I finally connected it to the kind of pencils they were using. Last year I had purchased them each a mechanical pencil that was a slim design and this year at Walmart I purchased mechanical pencils that were chunkier, with a rubber holder. When we switched back to the old pencils, their handwriting improved immediately.

  4. You might want to check out the "Come Look With Me" series. I'm not sure how many books there are but they have pictures grouped around a theme and questions on the opposite page, I really like them just haven't been very effective in incorporated them into my routine.

I'll try to link to the Amazon page but if it doesn't work just search on "Come Look with Me".

  5. So, when you get a checkout worker at the grocery store that comments on your purchases do you react positively or negatively.

Today at Meijers I received comments on all kinds of things in my shopping cart from the young man (probably early college age).

Two Bags of Frozen Chicken Breasts that were on sale: "Boy, that's a lot of chicken". I reply, "Yes, we use a lot of it".

Four gallons of milk: "Wow, I hope you can use all this milk before Nov. 22. That expiration date is coming right up". I reply, "Yes, that won't be problem, I have seven children so we go through it pretty fast". He answers, "Holy cr**! That's a lot of kids". :) I didn't really respond to that.

A bag of Huggies: "You must have a little one". Mind you, said 1 yods is sitting in the grocery cart. I just smiled and pointed.

I was glad I wasn't purchasing anything, ahem, more personal, today!:D

  6. What changes at the federal level are you referring to? Do you mean the new administration, or is there something else changing that I've missed?

As far as I know, there aren't going to be any changes in the Ohio homeschool law. It was recently reviewed and I think that process is continuing but as I understand it there was some change to some old language that really doesn't affect the law.

  7. My kids are loving Trisms. We are doing DAW this year and I was concerned that it was a lot of work on them. Lots of writing, lots of research.... so I've been very vocal in asking them how they feel about it and they both love it (this is my 16 and 14 yos). Just wanted to let you know that it does work for some kids - now my sixth grader started HM this year and absolutely hated it so we had to move on to something else. We are doing very little grammar - just a 10 minute review-type exercise and my daughter is doing Biology in Your Home and my son is doing Apologia Chemistry. We are also doing the science questionnaires from Trisms and it's all going very well.

  8. I think I have a budding missionary on my hands and one thing (besides the suggestions of missions biographies) that we are doing is really concentrating on foreign languages. My daughter is currently doing Latin (long-term) and Japanese. I'd really like to squeeze in some Greek (for bible knowledge) and another Romance language (probably some Frensh or Spanish).

My SIL is a missionary who grew up in Japan but is now in Bangladesh and it has been relatively easy for her to pick up the new language based upon her knowledge of Japanese.

You've probably already considered this, but I would also try to set up some short-term missions trips throughout highschool. We're currently experiencing this as my daughter left yesterday for a 2.5 month trip around Asia (fortunately she's able to travel with my inlaws who are retired missionaries so it was easy for us). There's nothing quite like the experience of being in a foreign country.

  9. My 16 yods just bought MLB last week so I just went and asked him. He doesn't think anyone under age 10 or 11 could really enjoy it because there is so much to control. You have to plan your pitching, line ups, etc. I did ask him if there is a simplified version and there really isn't.

We were laughing at him the other night because he got a game completely stuck because his pitcher got kicked out of the game for hitting a batter and my son didn't have anyone in the bull pen warming up so he couldn't put another pitcher in - he had to reset the whole game. My 11 yo has been dabbling in it but he enjoys it more when he is playing against his older brother rather than having to handle the whole thing by himself.

We don't have NHL or NFL so someone else will have to help with that.

    HTH,

  10. One year my MIL got our kids a handheld electronic dictionary/thesaurus - best Christmas present in years and used everyday. In fact, I'm thinking we need a couple more now that the kids are getting older. That thing gets passed around and fought over during school and really all day. Ours doesn't pronounce the words but I think now you can get models that will actually use the correct pronunciation for you which would be really handy.

  11. Funny you asked that because I just realized today that after several years of wandering through Sonlight and TOG we are definitely back to WTM for my younger guys, half back to WTM for my middle guy and not quite back but maybe leaning that way for my olders.

One reason is that I'm back to realizing that the basic read, narration, copywork and dictation model works really effectively. Another reason is that it is just simpler for me at this point.

So far it is working out great.

  12. I'll take a stab at this, you can see from my sigline that we passed three many moons ago. My husband and I both agree that three was the biggest adjustment for us. When you have three, you are outnumbered in the parents vs. kids relationship. I wouldn't say we had a hard time adjusting to it, but it was a big change. I think that when our third was born we realized that some things become out of reach - activities that are easy with two are more difficult with three, things that aren't expensive with two are more expensive with three. We did change a lot of our life style choices at that point - traded in our little Ford Probe for the first station wagon. . . You probably get the idea.

The whole argument about the middle child thing, I think is overblown to a certain extent. Right now in our family we have five "middle children" so maybe that's what makes it different for us but as long as you emphasize the family as a team, a unit, every person being important, I don't think any child can feel left out in normal circumstances.

As far as making that decision about when to be done . . you can see that we've not made that decision so I can't really comment. :)

  13. My 14yodd leaves on a trip to Asia in a few weeks and will be gone for over two months. She loves to read so I need to send some reading material with her but it's got to be paperback and not to "easy", if you know what I mean, so that she doesn't blow through the books too quickly. She loves the Eragon series and Brysingr was complicated enough that she enjoyed it but it took her quite a while to read it.

Any ideas on a three or more book series that might fit the bill? She likes historical fiction and fantasy probably the best.

Thanks so much for your help!

  14. Especially dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent, etc. Our laundry has never gone through our septic system before (long story and not very legal but at least it wasn't us that started it - previous owners) so I want to start using some kind of effective but organic laundry detergent. What about fabric softener - is there a kind that is better for septic systems?

Dishwashing machine detergent is another big question in my mind -which non-toxic ones work the best. Another question - what about toilet bowl cleaners - it seems all the ones I have around have some kind of chlorine bleach in them (I also have the now unallowed habit if just using straight bleach so really shine up the bowl).

I do have a relative who sells Shaklee - would that be the best way to go? Amway? Others that I don't know of. . .

    Thanks for all your help.

  15. My son just used scratch paper for the most part when he was at the computer. I think there were two lessons where I found writing in the book, so, if I was doing it again, I would just use scratch paper. Of course, then you sometimes have the errors in copying the problem that cause problems also . . . it probably depends on your dc.

  16. We're using Trisms this year, Discovering the Ancient World, with my 9th grade dd, and 10th grade ds. I just asked them last week whether they were enjoying it and they both really like it. The curriculum is completely researched based. The research sheets are divided into art, music, architecture and civlization. There are literature assignments for each unit based on literature that is included in the curr. and in addition to that there are additional reading assignments for each unit which are included as book lists and you pick one for each two units. There are also science history assignments for each unit. The authors recommend IEW for the writing portion of the program and the literature assignments are pretty specific to that method of writing, though it would be possible to complete the assignments without using IEW.

  17. From what I understand, there are many different ways to do the loop scheduling. We have some subjects are are considered daily subjects and are outside of the loop: For example, my sixth grader does a page of MUS Epsilon, a page of Singapore 4A or Challenging Word Problems, and a Bible reading every day so those items are outside of our loop. Then he has loop subjects: Grammar, Latin, Greek, History, Science, Writing, Art/Music. For the loop subjects, he is to spend at least 1/2 hour on the subject unless there's some reason (like a test) where the time would be less).

He is supposed to work from about 9 a.m. to noon and then 1 to 2. I know a lot of people stop their loops at noon but I had to modify a bit because I have a lot of younger children and there are times where I'm not instantly available to him for questions, despite my best intentions.

Wherever he is at at 2 is the last loop of the day and after his daily subjects the next day, he picks up the loop where he left off.

  18. I revamped our schedules this week and put everyone on a loop and I love it. It has really been a lifesaverfor all of us, but especially my sixth grade son. He has always fought me on school work but this week has been a breeze. No stinky attides, enthusiam for projects, time to pursue his own interests in the afternoon. . . I could go on and on. In fact, I had to laugh because several days he made it all the way around the loop, hitting every subject, in a much shorter time span then it used to take when I was making a detailed too do list for him every day.

My highschoolers are enjoying it also - they are turning in more quality work because they are free to work more deeply on a subject rather than just working to get items checked off.

A big thank-you to all of you who have presented this idea!
