Gwen,
Yes, degree requirements for a music major are usually at least 50% music classes. Music majors also tend to have more credits per semester because of private lessons, ensembles and band, orchestra or choir.

Kirstin,
It actually would not be two years of American history in one year. 11th grade MFW is 1 semester of history and 1 semester of government. 12th grade is the second semester of history and 1 semester of economics. FYI the American history is just going through the BJU textbook and student workbook with BJU tests. 11th grade has early American literature that is put together nicely. 12th grade has 1 semester of American literature but it basically just has a reading list with a book report after each book. 12th grade second semester English is a speech course. HTH. My son is doing 11th grade MFW this year without any adjustments. I am ordering 12th grade for next year but may do something different for English. PM me if you have any more questions.

Greta,
What year are these books scheduled? I am looking for the Foster books and I cannot find them.

I would say developing a clear worldview is a big thing in our homeschool. Also the relationship between my three boys is awesome.

THis has been years in the making in VA. After unsuccessfully trying to come to an agreement with the VA High School League, a bill was introduced last year. It didn't make it out of committee. This is a victory especially for those in rural areas. If it makes it to the govenor to sign, only time will tell how much it will effect our homeschooling freedoms, though. Of course, my 11th grade ds is bummed that this has taken so long.

I think it is an awesome resource.:001_smile:

Colleges consider writing classes electives. Writing is expected to be part of a high school English class. Classes labeled journalism, creative writing, fiction writing, etc., are electives. They are good to have on a transcript if the student wants to pursue an English major or a major pertaining to one of the electives.
-
The county we live in uses "+". I attach the grading scale to the transcript so they know how the gpa was calculated. Admission offices will recalculate the GPA on their own if they don't want to consider pluses or minuses.
-
That is all they need to know so that is all I give 'em. :001_smile:

You can definitely do just the history and English portions. I am very impressed with these portions and ds is doing well with them. He has found Thinking Like a Christian challenging and time consuming. He is fighting it mainly because of the title - he doesn't want to be told how to think :tongue_smilie:.

I currently have my college son and high school junior watching this course. They do the note-taking, we have discussions, and when we come to a chapter review we do it orally. I do have my high school student complete the unit tests as open book tests. In addition, my high schooler will complete "Life Prep for Homeschooled Teenagers" by Barbara Frank. I am giving a half credit for those combined.
Let me add: This will be .5 credit of Personal Finance. He will be doing a .5 credit of Economics next year.

I put on the transcript the grade the teacher gave according to the percentage. If the teacher's grading scale was different than mine, I converted the percentage to a letter grade according to my scale. Does this make sense?

A young man that I have known for a long time very successfully applied to the top colleges in our state as a chemistry major. He was homeschooled from the beginning and graduated at the age of 16. He was offered a competitive STEM scholarship at James Madison University, was accepted at VA Tech and VCU, and chose to attend UVA.
-
My ds attended public school in 9th grade, took some homeschool classes, had two AP classes from PA Homeschoolers, and two community college classes. I put everything on one transcript. I noted which classes were taken at the ps and cc. For the other outsourced classes I listed the teacher and contact info. This was sent to four colleges and we was accepted at all. If admissions wanted to request a transcript from the ps I would have requested one be sent. I only sent his cc transcript to the school that he chose to attend so that the credits would be transferred.

I preordered this because my son really wanted to skip chemistry and go on to physics. I thought this would be a good compromise. I have not started it yet because there is some prep work that I need to do. There is a list for each chapter that shows how much time each component (DVD, reading, lab, quiz) will take, but I need to convert this into a daily lesson plan. I also could not find a materials list for the suggested labs, so I will need to create that myself. I have read good reviews of Biology 101 so I am looking forward to getting started in chemistry.

I posted this within the original thread but I think it got lost in the posts.
Okay, odd turn of events. Principal changed his mind before I called.
From what I understand, ds has been texting a friend of his gf. He has been helping her understand the role of God in her life. This friend wanted to do something in return so she went to the principal and spoke with him. She apparently has a better relationship with the principal and changed his mind. Ds can now go to the dance.
Thank you for all the input. A lot of posters expressed different opinions that matched my frustration. That piece of paper would tell the school nothing about a guest at their school dance. Our public school has about 2700 students. The only thing their signature would show is that a student attends school and is in good standing. Nothing else. The last thing that is on my mind: The principal just changed his mind when a "good" student spoke with him?

I have taken two phone calls while typing this and now have to sign off. Thank you for all the input. A lot of posters expressed different opinions that matched my frustration. The last thing that is on my mind: The principal just changed his mind when a "good" student in his book spoke with him?

The homeschooling wasn't overlooked. The gf pleaded her case today to the principal and was told no matter what the circumstances, he couldn't accept it because it was signed by a parent.
Can't wait to get on the phone with the principal tomorrow. I will take a deep breath before calling and remember to exhibit self-control but I am not a happy camper.
-
I will be calling the school tomorrow because this is ridiculous.
We live in VA and son's girlfriend lives in PA. They met at a Bible camp this summer and have spoken on the phone every day since. After much discussion we agreed to take him to PA so he could take his gf to the homecoming dance. The gf mailed us a form that has to be turned in if someone's date does not attend the school. The form is to be signed by the guest's school counselor or principal. I stated that he is homeschooled and signed the form as his counselor. The request was denied because the form was signed by a parent. What? This school has never had a homeschooler request to escort a student to a dance?
My oldest son was accepted to four universities but my second son is denied entrance to a high school dance...

DS is doing Dave Ramsey's course for teens right now. Then he will do the projects in Life Prep for homeschooled teenagers by Barbara Frank at http://www.CardamomPublishers.com.

Last year ds started at a college about 3 hrs from home. Both dh and I wanted to go so we ended up taking 2 vehicles and the two younger brothers went also. Everyone got to see some of the campus =, where ds would be living, and met a roommate. Perfect choice to have all of us move him in.

There is instruction in the appendix of the "American Literature Supplement" that includes pre-writing phase, outline for persuasive paper, the thinking challenge, writing phase, and re-writing phase. It is more of a review section for students that may need it.
-
My ds will have 7 credits: English 11, U.S. History/Government, apologetics (this is all MFW), chemistry, pre-calculus, and at the public school he will take French 2 and film studies.
My college son had the following senior year: calculus and psychology at the CC, AP econ (.75), American literature, government (.5), senior year Bible study, composition (.5).
