We'll be doing Jacob's Geometry with Derek Owens.
Can you tell me about your experience with Derek Owens? We are in Haiti for a year and need a video course for geometry...
Thanks!

We're using Discovering Geometry by Key Curriculum Press.
Can a pretty intelligent 10th grader work through Discovering Geometry by Key Curriculum Press on their own, with the teacher's guide?
Anyone done this?
Thanks!

I like Total Health. It covers all the stuff that public school health classes do, but not obsessing on it so much (drinking etc). Instead, more time is given to health of a person who is not engaging in hugely risky behaviors but still needs to take care of themselves.
Hewitt has a syllabus for the junior hi one, including a Dover anatomy coloring book.
My Father's World has a syllabus for the high school one, including I Kissed Dating Good-Bye.

If you buy the syllabus did you need the teacher's manual? What does the syllabus include from MFW? I am looking at Total Health for my high schooler, but don't want to purchase the TM. Is that possible?
Thanks!

Does anyone know if it's necessary to purchase the teacher's manual for the Total Health curriculum for High Schoolers?
Thanks!

That's correct. In Indiana 1 credit = 1 semester of work, so it's about 6 courses/year to get an academic honors diploma. The other 6 courses do not have to be 'honors' classes. To get a better idea of what an Academic Honors diploma would look like you can go to this IUHS site -

I'm not necessarily recommending IUHS but we have used it. We will not be using it this year because it just didn't work well for us. We still plan on doing a home school diploma that meets the requirements of an academic honors diploma, but it is my understanding that as home schoolers we cannot officially award such a thing. Of course, colleges will be able to tell that it meets those requirements.
When I spoke with an official at IU Bloomington, he told me that many more than usual of the students admitted this year had academic honors diplomas. Although not required, the competition for admission was at a much higher level possibly because the economy was forcing more people to consider state universities rather than going to the more expensive private institutions. Thus, he recommended that we do academic honors level work in our home school.
I don't know if you're interested in IU, but they do have a web page devoted to what is expected of homeschoolers.

So, I have a 9th grader, am an Indiana resident, and am new to transcripts and credits. Do I need to record my dd's transcript to look like an Indiana Academic Honors' even though I can't officially award such a thing? Indiana designates a semester's worth of work as ONE credit. Do I have to make my records reflect Indiana's credits? Should I record a year's worth of work to be ONE credit or TWO credits, as Indiana requires?
Thank you, thank you for any words of experience!

I am trying to work with a tutor on creating a Spanish 1 class using Rosetta Stone version 2 as a basis for my 9th grade dd.
What must be included for a year's worth of credit for Spanish 1? Spanish 2?
Thank you so much!

I hope someone can help you:001_smile:
Ds used Jacob's, but not independently.
How much did you help them? Are you a math whiz? I did fine in high school math, but it's been so long! I'm intimidated to try to relearn all this and teach it by myself!
How much time did you take to prepare your lessons?
Thanks!

If anyone has any input on whether their kiddos were able to complete geometry by working through Jacobs independently, I would so appreciate it!

Hello-
My dd grader will be taking geometry next year as a 9th grader and I need help figuring out geometry. She is a strong student but must work to achieve high math grades. She received an A this year in Algebra at a local private school. We used MUS in 5th-7th when she was home. She's coming back home and has said she likes video teaching, but I would like something a little more in-depth than MUS. I have heard good things about Jacobs geometry but I am not sure how she would be working through it independently. Any suggestions? I would prefer not to spend hefty money on Chalkdust, but if that's the best there is, I guess we could bite the bullet.
My other thought is MUS honors plus LOF.
Help, please!

Hi!
My dd12 is finishing up MUS Zeta this year and slowly working through Sing. 4b (hoping to continue Sing. as a supplement through summers).
What do we need to look for in a pre-algebra text for her 7th grade year? What will she need to prepare her for algebra?
Trying to decide whether to stick with MUS. She's doing just fine with it...but want to make sure she is adequately prepared for college.
I'm not the mathy mom...
What is the difference between Lial's BCM and MUS pre-algebra? Any other suggestions?
Thanks so much!

Wow, Siloam, thanks! Your input is very helpful. What about prep time - how does that compare?
Do you read any books aloud?
Are you happy with the writing aspect of TOG?
-
Thanks for your input!

Can anyone help me sort out the differences between these two programs? I have enjoyed Core 3+4 and 5 of SL, but am not happy with the lack of literary analysis and thought-provoking discussions/writing assignments for history. My dd is 12 and I'm bringing home ds 9 and ds 7 this fall.

I'm looking for input on Bravewriter. Is the Writer's Jungle worth the expense? Any input would be valuable!
Thanks!

Has anyone used Bravewriter philosophies out there? What has been your success with this? Is the Writer's Jungle worth the money?
Thanks so much!

My 12 yo dd has done MUS Delta and Zeta and I am trying to figure out where to go for pre-Algebra on up. She definitely is not a textbook girl, and math is not her strongest suit. However, she has yearnings about dental school (right now). I want her to be prepared for anything!
So, I'm looking for a rigorous enough program that also caters to someone who needs to *hear* a concept explained (DVD?). I'm not mathy enough myself to undertake some of the higher maths w/out help.
Thanks!

My 12 yo dd and I really like A.G. It is motivating to her that she can work hard to get through a section of AG and be done (except for every other week review). I like it because she's diagramming and parsing sentences better than I can! In addition, once a secton of AG is completed, I can turn my attention to other things in L.Arts, like writing or Latin.
(We are doing AG over 3 years...6,7,8th, as is recommended, we do one section a year)
Blessings!

I've used SL core 3+4 and 5 and am not happy with the lack of literary analysis and the new LA program. We're moving on to world history with dd 7th grade, ds 4th and 2nd next year. If I use SL core 6, does anyone have suggestions as to how to incorporate more lit. analysis and reflective writing? Or, is there a program out there I don't know about?
What spine texts have others used for world history? (I've heard SOTW is more elementary - what should I use for my 7th grader?)
Has anyone used Stobaugh's Literary Analysis?
Any other LA suggestions?
Thanks!
What are you using for college prep geometry? more...

Would you say Discovering Geometry is rigorous? How does it compare to Jacobs or any other common home-school geometry curriculum?
Thank you!
