You have permission to quit it and find something that works better for you!
Don't beat yourself up over Explode the Code (ETC), simply go with something like
Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling and
Phonics Pathways Boosters!: Fun Games and Teaching Aids to Jump-Start Reading

We cannot do without the Basher science series:

I have been incredibly impressed by both:

Explode the Code (ETC) is a great supplement to any phonics program, I would not eliminate it.
-
How about Teaching Textbooks (you can take the placement tests). I like it because when my son doesn't feel like reading (he still struggles a bit) he can listen to the lessons being read to him.
:iagree:We LOVE Teaching Textbooks.
-
I've seen them, but admittedly don't do the hands-on activities. I am not the crafty type. However, we do use the reading lists.
-
We are using Hake Grammar - it starts at 5th grade and goes through 8th.
:iagree:
-
Hake grammar does this. It starts from scratch each year and only starts at 5th grade and goes through 8th grade.
-
Explode the Code (ETC) is fantastic and less than half the price.
-
-
I'd do the First Language Lessons 4 first and then consider Analytical Grammar. However, I do like Hake Grammar better than Analytical.
-
Actually, I've always considered CLE Math to be advanced.
-
We are only using 1 math curriculum, Teaching Textbooks. LOVE IT!

The IEW DVDs really DO the teaching for me. I am very happy and the kids are too.

Killgallon has a new high school book that just released April 11, 2012 based on paragraphs!

It looks fantastic!

Using some of Explode the Code is better than using none. If you do the writing portion orally and let him watch you write it out for him that would be even better. If you want to do even more... write it in highlighter and then let him trace the words.
-
We take 1-2 weeks off periodically when we suffer from burnout. I just had a baby on April 5th and we are taking about a month off until I can finally get a full night of sleep.

I also recommend Hake grammar, it has been great for my son.
-
Phonics Pathways is much better, especially when paired with Explode the Code.
-
I found a few of these at a thrift store, they are great. I am looking for a more literature book...like historical literature, only with science.
What about the Horrible Science books?

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read Complete Amazon Exclusive Editions?
in K-8 Curriculum Board
Posted
I am looking for reviews on these Hooked on Phonics Amazon Exclusive Edition sets and wonder how they are different from the regular Hooked on Phonics sets? They look so appealing because they are complete for each grade level.

I am tempted to get the Pre-K one for my son. I am totally a phonics-a-holic though. I already use Explode the Code (ETC) but I see that more as a supplement.
