  1. :iagree: I love WWE . . . the hardback and the workbooks. The combination of WWE and the writing lectures makes for great teacher training. I just have to read, listen, re-read, re-listen over and over and over. It's taking awhile for it to stick and become natural to teach.

The same for me, but what makes it all okay is with WWE and the lectures I actually understand how to teach writing and feel like I can do this.

  2. Pre-Algebra introduces your child to variables and negatives and then makes the child work with them for a whole year. Some children need to feel comfortable with variables, it is sort of freaky for them to see a problem they thought now with variables all over them or with a negative number they have to work with. In Abeks and BJU. up through 7th grade you might get some variable work or negative work but it is just an introduction. In Pre-Algebra they are working with variables and negative numbers the entire year, so much that by the time they get to Algebra, negative numbers will be as familiar as positive numbers to them and wont cause mistakes.

  3. I will pray for you. This is something I understand.

I had always wanted a daughter, just something about having my own girl. I was blessed with three boys that I love, but there was a special place in my heart waiting for a daughter to fill. One night, after my 2nd was born, God showed me 3 boys and a girl. I had to wait 12 loooooong years and before i saw Gods promise fulfilled.

God is good and will give you the desires of your heart.

I will keep you in my prayers because I do understand.

  4. We haven't used them yet, but I have the How Great Thou Art 1 and 2 and Feed my Sheep, I got both off of ebay for a few dollars. They look great. I plan on doing the Feed my Sheep book as a family thing on Saturdays or Friday nights.

The How Great Tou Art books will be part of the art program I am putting together for my ds for a high school art credit (along with art apreciation study).

  5. I am so excited!

We have not seen him since Jan. 31, 2010, when he left for boot camp (Navy). He told us he would be coming but he had to wait for his orders , this was weeks ago. Finally last night he called and will be arriving today.

My dd is so excited, they were very close and she misses him so much.

I am so proud of him, I am going to brag some:

In just one year he has:

-20-30 guys under him in his detail

-while in the med. unit recovering from a leg injury (3 months) he created his own workout that others joined in...actual announcements over speakers made daily that J's work out was beginning in x minutes

-keeps head in crisis...under someone else's watch (my son was not anywhere around at the time) a ritual went bad and a guy lost 2 fingers, the phones were not working so they went looking for my son to help in the crisis, he did, called the proper people and took care of the two fingers on the bathroom floor.

-made top grade in his schooling

-special permission granted to work with Marines

DD is planning to make signs for when he gets off the plane. She is also practicing her scream for when she sees him. She said she has to have it right so he will know she is very excited to see him.

My mom and I are making a menu of all his favorite foods and we are going to take turns cooking for him.

  6. We bring snacks in, but buy drinks there. If we want popcorn, we get it there too. I don't feel bringing snacks from outside is wrong because there is no sign on the door saying no outside food or drinks allowed. If there was then I would not do it. Just because they sell snacks doesn't mean you cannot bring your own unless stated otherwise. We bring snacks from home when we go to a theme park or zoo even though they sell snacks there.

  7. Yes, you can.

With that being said though...the workbooks were ment to be used with the TM. It will have central theme and character running through it (2nd grade is Mike O'Mally a Paddy the beaver going around the world building homes) You will be missing out on the story of this guy and about information on other countries. The TM keeps you in the theme of things because all the hands on stuff has a story related to Mike O'Mally and Paddy. The manipulative pack uses this theme on the counters and work mats. My children loved the themes and charecters the math introduced them to and my 20 yr old will still mention math with Farmer Brown (K) and Mike o'Mally (2nd).

  8. My son is coming home for a visit (he is in the Navy and hasn't been home in 11 months). He still is finished all his schooling so he is not really stationed anywhere yet. As usual, he has not told me what he would like for Christmas. He has done this for the last 3 yrs and it is highly frustrating. This year is the worse because he is in limbo right now. I begged him for a few hints and his response to my email..."Negative". :glare:

I know he wants some expensive running shoes that I will get him, but I need some ideas for other gifts. What would a 20 yr old want?!?

Here are some things I thought of:

    Homemade cookies

    pocket knife

    running shorts and shirt

  9. Narrating for science is the same as narrating for any other subject. But with science you can have them do more drawing to help explain the topic covered. EX: Draw the water cycle and label, draw the life cycle of a butterfly, draw what you see happening to the seed we plannted, and so on.

  10. We are in the process of moving. I stopped school at Thanksgiving and will start it up again around the 17th of January (we will be 2 weeks in the new house by then). I don't feel guilty. There is so much for me to think about and get done....add in CHristmas...and if I schooled on top of it all I would be running screaming down the road.

You have enough on your plate trying to get things packed and organized. Let the kids also relax, it is a stressful time for them too. If they read, play legos, and watch some educational tv/dvds, that's enough. Since we are moving to a new state, I got library books on the state for them to look at. Another thing they can do is play some educational games on line. The key is have them do some things constructive and educational that does not really involve you.

My kids understand that because they are getting extra time off of the curriculum, they will be schooling later in the year then normal.

  11. For several years I used BJU History and pulled in books from SL or Winterpromise or other books to add to the history. It worked great because BJU history is written so you have a choice of doing it for the full year or half a year. I followed the half year schedule then added in the extra books and activities I wanted to do. We had the best of both types of curriculums, textbooks and literature.

  12. Read them.

This is how we made our decision to let our kids read them.

After my youngest son finished the last book (he was about 12) I asked him to tell me the main theme running through the books. He said the greatest thing is love.

Do I tell you to let your son read them, no. This is something you have to do on your own (and husbands). Each child is different. It did not effect my children's Christianity. They did not focus on the wizardry or become interested in witchcraft. We discussed the books with my children as they read them. I also read the book Looking for God in Harry Potter. It helped me verbalize things we found in the book.
