  1. I can also still buy any item I want without divulging any (what you say is) private information from my grocery store any time I choose.

I'm not much on the privacy/slippery slope bandwagon, but I have to admit it really annoys me that all my local stores now swipe my drivers license when I buy alcohol or M rated video games. You can't buy those things without it.

  2. Truant kids are not the subject of the Texas issue...that is the California school that is using a system to call and check in with the kids before, during and after school hours.

I didn't read the whole article, but the second paragraph is:

The "Student Locator Project," which is slated to eventually reach 112 Texas schools and close to 100,000 students, is in trial stages in two Northside district schools. In an effort to reduce truancy, the district has issued new student IDs with an embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip that tracks the location of a student at all times.

  3. :iagree: This is what I was thinking. The chip is part of the school ID. It's not like they're shooting them directly into the students' brains. I think it's unnecessary, but not a hill I'd die on if I was one of the parents.

    :iagree::iagree::iagree:

I wonder if they really think the truant kids are going to wear it when they leave school. :001_rolleyes: Seems like a massive waste of money.

  4. Tis the season - SIGH!!!

My inbox is being flooded with lots of "losing our freedoms", etc. e-mails and for the life of me I cannot figure out why these folks aren't using www.snopes.com to determine whether they should be forwarded or not. These are people who seem intelligent but apparently are happy to grasp at any content that puts their particular belief in a good light.

I'm realizing that when I send back an e-mail showing that the content is FALSE, nothing happens. They just keep sending it out :glare: There are plenty of legitimate reasons for voting a certain way; we don't need the false reasons that are circulating via e-mail.

Is there a comparable e-mail flood for those in the left-leaning, liberal camp?

I get tons of this cr*p on Facebook. When I post a link to Snopes, people tell me that Snopes has an extremist liberal agenda and can't be trusted. :D

  5. The principal made a big deal out of the fact that more detailed health information, such as a physical or immunization records, would NOT be needed if all she wanted to do was choir.

Perhaps the nurse was not aware of that conversation, but I know dd is not the first homeschooler to participate in extracurriculars, so it bothers me. I'm not a rule dodger, but I intentionally made an appointment so that I had all of the information upfront. We may have made a different choice about dd's participation had we known beforehand.

The principal made a mistake. It's a public health issue. The nurse is coming from a public health perspective. The Board of Education, who checks records, is going to have a public health perspective. They might make an exception for you, but legally and medically, they shouldn't.

ETA: I'm just referring to immunizations. Most districts require a health form, but only require a physical for athletics, although they encourage them for everyone.

  6. My feeling is that these jobs are age appropriate, yet I feel the need to check, since I have no end of problems getting them to complete these chores. Even when they are generally obedient and/or when there are clear consequences for non-completion of these tasks, I still have major issues getting them to do these things.

My kids would have done those things, but there is no way that they would have done them as well as an adult could, and I wouldn't have expected them too. At 15, my dd can do just about any household job as well as I can, but at 7? No way.

  7. I listed some bricks/pavers on craigslist and got this reply:

Good day all, what is your phone number, can you text me at xxx-xxx-xxxx or hot reply all and I will get a return in my personal mail box, I am definatly interested in the pavers.

    Thanks

    Andy

I X'd out the number but its by no means a local number. Its attached to a military email address for the base about an hour from here.

I think so, because it says "pavers" in the message. When I get Craigslist spam, it never has the name of what I'm selling. It's just a generic "I'm interested."

Also, how much are you asking? Spammers never bother me unless what I'm selling is worth more than $100 or so.

  8. I understand. I have a phobia of dentists too.

I've had to have quite a bit of work done on my teeth in the last few years, and it's never as bad as I'm expecting. And every time I go, it gets easier. I have taken Xanax in the past and it does help.

You definitely need to be seen. The longer you wait, the more likely it will progress and you'll need more extensive work. So call now! :)

It may be something simple. And be sure to tell the dentist about your anxiety. They can help you relax.

  9. Tics, or muscle twitches, are a common occurrence in children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, or AAP, about 20 percent of children suffer from tics. Tics usually affect children between seven and nine years of age, but may occur in children as young as two. Tics are usually a benign condition and typically resolve within a few months. However, you may need to talk to your pediatrician if the tics interfere with your child's daily activities or persist for longer than a year.

    Definition

A tic is an involuntary movement or sound that is done repetitively. Tics most commonly occur in the face and neck, but can occur in any part of the body. Motor tics include repetitive movements such as blinking the eyes, raising the eyebrows, grimacing, biting the lips, twisting the neck, shrugging the shoulders, thrusting the arms, kicking the legs and jumping. Vocal tics include sounds or speech such as coughing, clearing the throat, grunting, snorting, moaning, humming and even speaking words or sentences.

  10. If you aren't a Christian, how would you define it?

Does that matter? If not a Christian, then doesn't really understand it. It's like asking me how I would explain being a male? I can tell you a lot about it, and even gave birth to one, but I don't really "get" it in the same way as my husband and son.

But I'm not asking what it's "like" to be Christian. I'm looking for how people define it.

I can define what it is to be male and what the requirements are. :)

  11. understand what that means?

My husband and I are having a slight disagreement about what people mean when they say they are a Christian.

What makes a person a Christian? Are there specific requirements? Is there a universal definition, or can everyone sort of identify as Christian however they want? Is belief in Jesus' resurrection required? Can someone be a Christian if they follow the teachings of Jesus, but don't believe that Jesus is the son of God?

If you aren't a Christian, how would you define it?

I hope this is not a stupid question. I am not a Christian, and while I have my own answers, I really don't know if Christians would agree with me. I hope we can discuss this without conflict.

    Thanks.
