  1. Folks reading the code here for the first time -- and then decide to use it -- should become a fan of the page out of courtesy.

Well, I feel no obligation to become a fan. I am on their mailing list and that's as far as I'll go. I have no interest whatsoever in joining Facebook for a number of reasons. I really don't feel like getting into a big debate over my opinions and actions, so that's about all I'll say (I think :tongue_smilie:). You're entitled to your opinion, but I happen to disagree with it.

  2. It's free to sign up on Facebook. You could join just to get the code without becoming a regular FB user.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really don't want to sign up for facebook at all (and would choose to miss the coupon code if that's what I had to do to get it). Luckily I don't need the code anymore. :001_smile:

  3. Hi,

Would anyone be willing to share the 25% off coupon code that they are offering for Latin for Children? I don't have a facebook account, but I'd love to get a discount. If someone isn't comfortable posting here, you can always PM me.

  4. We love Real Science Odyssey too (and I didn't care for RS4K). Unfortunately, when I've tried to open the files for Classiquest, my computer either freezes up or it says it's done and it's not, no matter how long I wait. Maybe I'll give it another try tomorrow.

Thanks for the information you provided about the program. I do appreciate it!

  5. But it is true that if you do more than the worksheets, it comes from you and not from the material, correct? I'm asking this respectfully because maybe I'm missing something in MM.

Well, there are "helpful resources" lists at the beginning of every chapter (but I have never used any of those to be honest). I'm guessing that some people do.

I suppose that for me personally, the answer to your question is yes, with a qualifying statement. To me, the explanations in the worktexts are very thorough, so because of who I am, the extra that I do is an extension of the program that makes sense to me. I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear there. I know what I want to say, but not sure I'm getting it out right. :tongue_smilie: I don't need to go to any other source to figure out how to make math meaningful to my kids.

Math does come naturally to me, and because of where I am in my life right now, extending the lessons doesn't seem like I'm doing anything extra (but maybe I am?). I guess I don't know whether or not someone who is not strong in math could make that same natural extension as that's not who I am. To me, again, it just seems natural, so in my head anyone can do it. :tongue_smilie:

On the flip side, I suppose not everyone is looking to make those extensions as needed/desired on their own. The program is a strong program as written in my opinion.

Anyway, I really don't think I'm being very clear here so I apologize. It's nice that there are so many choices out there!

  6.

With Math Mammoth, you're basically handing the child a worksheet, reading instructions and they do the work.

I just wanted to comment on this one statement. I think it comes down to how the teacher uses the material, because this is certainly not how math is done in my house with MM. :tongue_smilie: It's the same way with Singapore too. Some people don't use the HIG, or don't supplement with the extra books, etc.... So while I can appreciate this particular opinion (as it's an opinion and meaningful to the person who wrote it), I personally don't agree with it (and that's ok as we're all different).

I honestly think that they are both strong programs. Good luck with your decision. :)

  7. We LOVE MM!!!

I basically didn't do any structured math with my daughter for 2-3 years, and this year we started with 3A. We're now in 4A (almost in 4B), and I couldn't be happier. We spend a lot of time on math as I'm trying to get her up to "grade level" and we're finally there.

The instructions are very clear and thorough IMO. We have had no problems whatsoever understanding any of the material, and my daughter is excelling. I plan to use MM through 6B with her, and my 5 year old will start MM 1A next year. (I will be doing some Singapore 1A with her this year as I have the books and it starts out a little more slowly in 1A in my opinion).

So there ya go.....a little bit of a positive push for you. :tongue_smilie: Good luck deciding!

  8. That's what I thought! I got a notice in my email that they were releasing it. What do you think of her books. My only problem is that they might not take as long as I would like to complete and they are expensive. Is it worth the price?

I personally think the curriculum is way overpriced, but that's just my opinion. We switched from Real Science 4 Kids to RSO this year and we've been much happier. I think you'd have to add in a lot to make the material last even half the year, but I haven't seen the astronomy, so maybe there's more to that than the rest. The actual textbooks are decent IMO. JMO

  9. Oh, and I am of the opinion that a lot of curricula can be tweaked to fit a particular child. Most of the moms I know do that verses buying different math curricula for each child's learning styles or switching. It seems like many do that on this forum, but that is not the norm where I am, and I know lots and lots of homeschoolers. Also, most of them do very well come testing time.

I guess I feel that my child could do well on testing no matter what math curriculum we chose, but she could be miserable using a program like Saxon to accomplish it, or I can find something that really works for her without much tweaking and still do well if/when we did testing. I love math but find some programs to not fit my own learning/teaching style, so why tweak tons (and still not be happy) when I can find something that works great elsewhere?

  10. I would like for my children to be fluent in Spanish, but we have not officially started anything as of yet. We've been talking with a few other families about possibly starting a Spanish class with a fluent professional, and it looks like that may happen for next year. I''l probably have both my oldest children attend, although I will not push it with my 5 year old. We live in CA and feel that it is a very useful language to learn here. My 9 year old is also interested in Latin, so we will probably do some Latin study, but I'm just not sure whether I'm going to start them concurrently or a few years apart.

  11. Another fan of "My Father's Dragon"

Even my 2 1/2 year old likes My Father's Dragon (and the two books that follow). I recently read all 3 to my 5 year old, and my younger one brings the books to my husband and I to be read pretty much every day right now. :tongue_smilie:
