I have three girls, my oldest is almost 6. We are just starting out, obviously, but I've been planning on homeschooling for years. My daughter is cooperative, learning a lot, happy with things the way they are, but has also always wanted to go to school. She is super social, very bright, etc. Really, really wonderful girl.
Right now I am about 12 weeks pregnant. I have not been sick, and I hardly feel pregnant at all. However, I feel a weird sort of aversion to homeschooling. I don't want to read about it, I don't want to think about it, and I don't really want to do it. I take my daughter to soccer and see her light up around the other kids and wonder if I should just put her into school. I've never really thought of public school as an option, but now I think about it all the time! We live far out in the country, where there is pretty much one option for school. It's a small public school that is mediocre at the very best.
Has anyone felt like this and snapped out of it later? I feel so sad. We aren't doing a lot, so I don't think I'm burned out. Homeschooling just seems so unappealing lately.

Thanks for the replies. I got a hold of my teacher and she said any consumables that we haven't used they would like returned. They wouldn't be interested in stuff that had been used, even if there was just a few pages in a workbook. So there ya go. Now to decide. Has anyone pulled their kid and regretted it? I kind of don't think I will...

I really want to just pull my first grader out of CVA. I'm tired of the check-ins and whatnot, and I'm pregnant and due mid-April. I know I don't want to deal with CVA after having the baby, but I'm just feeling burned out right now.
I ordered almost entirely consumables this year, I've received art supplies and science kits and workbooks. Most of it has not been opened or used. I don't really want to keep the stuff if I'm pulling my daughter out. I don't want to use the system that way, and I feel like it could cause problems in the future if they have people doing that. I almost pulled my daughter out earlier, but then I saw my orders had been put through and decided I'd just stick with it. But I'm so tired, and I feel like its too much for a first-grader-that-should-be-in-kindergarten. Or too much for me. Has anyone returned unused consumables?

My At doesn't mind if we don't do all the subjects every week, although we always do math/la. But maybe you could just say that you do science one week/history the other and PE one week/art the other. I don't know. But we have always done what others suggested and read books from the library to have something to report on.

Well, last year I had my daughter call and talk to the teacher. She's pretty outgoing, but she definitely didn't give a complete rundown of what we were doing. Generally she would talk a lot about science, and a little about a couple other things. The teacher was fine with it.
This year our teacher requested email check ins if we could manage it. So far it's been ok. I always have something fun that we can do after the check in to move things along. I have no problem coaching and leading and whatnot. She's 5. There's no way she recount what she's done in every subject. So, I'll say, "Tell me one of your spelling words and spell it." Or "We read about Columbus yesterday, remember? Can you tell me something about Columbus?" Or, "We're studying subtraction, can you give me an example of subtraction?" After I have gotten a few comments from her, I write in a more complete review of what we have done, in red. My teacher is fine with that. I know it is hard though, and my daughter hates it.

Yes, my daughter turned 5 last December and we did enroll mid-year. She scored higher than 90% on her tests, but my AT said she could do K again this year if I wanted her to, or could go on to first. We decided to put her in first. If I feel, at the end the year, she's not ready for second then I'm pretty sure I could just ask to repeat first grade. I don't think CVA is a long term thing for us though, so I'm not terribly concerned with grade levels.

I did kindergarten last year, and I think they are considered part time. I was debating about enrolling her in K again this year because she started last year mid-year when she turned 5. If she were going to regular school she would be starting K right now. Anyways, I was going back and forth about it with my AT, and she reassured me that I would be able to order what I needed even if I did go over the part-time allotment. Ultimately, though, I enrolled her as a first grader this year, because I didn't want worry about being hassled about going over. I have a really supportive AT, that has been so wonderful to work with. My experience doing K was really positive.

I'm going to be doing the Wee Folk Art seasonal curriculum with my 5 year old this year, and I'm really excited about it. It's similar to FIAR, but more laid-back. Plus, it's free. :)

I love the Tasha Tudor one, but my kids prefer Gyo's illustrations.

Oh dear! I would be frustrated too!

What is the "Purchase Date" to the left of your order status in your "My Requisitions" screen. I haven't received anything yet, but the date on my Rainbow order is 7/18, so it might be awhile yet? Just trying to get an idea.:001_smile:

Oh, bummer. I guess I'll just wait and ask my at next year.

Great, thanks!

If we're expected to return them, I won't order them. Anyone know?

We don't keep cereal around, and I grew up eating it for breakfast every day. I looove it.
I really prefer steel-cut oats to rolled oats. I buy them in bulk and put 1 cup in a medium saucepan with 1 cup of milk and 3 cups of water. I add a pinch of salt, a dollop of honey, and cinnamon if I feel like it. I put it in the fridge for the night, and in the morning I bring it to a boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 10 minutes. Really good, especially with sliced strawberries and bananas and almonds.
I make our bread so we will often have toast + something else for breakfast.
toast + eggs
toast + a green smoothie
toast + yogurt
toast + fruit
toast + a glass of milk
toast w/ pb and banana on top
I like popovers too, made with the barefoot contessa's recipe. I like to plop some applesauce and a dab of butter inside. I'm getting hungry talking about all this food, I love breakfast!

There are lots of great suggestions here! I agree with the person who mentioned audiobooks, especially if they will listen to the same story over and over. My daughter has picked up a lot of new words from listening to her favorite audiobooks. She'll also randomly ask me throughout the day (not while listening to a book) what a certain word means, and when I ask her to use it in a sentence she will quote the book she was listening to earlier. She has really loved Winnie-the-Pooh, Jame's Herriot's Treasury, Peter Pan, EB White books, and the Chronicles of Narnia.

Ohhh, but if you slowed down there would be fewer reviews on your blog. :tongue_smilie:

I've had my eye on the Amazing Pop-up Geography book for awhile.

I hope things work out with MP3! I am really happy they dropped the hour/week thing.

I did get to meet Sadonna, but I'm bummed I didn't get to meet up with you Rosy. I agree that it was a lot of fun, and it was so nice to have sunshine on Tuesday. Can you imagine if it had been rainy?
-
We're going and I think we're in group 2. It will be fun to meet you guys!
Rosy- We were thinking about going to the cheese factory on Monday too, and maybe the beach in Oceanside depending on the weather. We went there for our honeymoon and love it.
See you next week!
I love homeschooling!
