  1. I've tried to search and read some of the treads on MEP, based on a recommendation for my 4 yr old daughter. I'm not finding enough information on it, and the actual website is ...information overload  Can you tell me the pros and cons? And if you've done it, how do you find the content and structure?
  2. Thanks everyone - especially for the links and not writing everything in abbreviations. I guess that eliminates Five in a Row for me, as I want something more specific. Kirch I'm seriously considering Mammoth Maths ..and also Abeka, and Math U See. I'm undecided as I see though to go with Mammoth as I see the benefits of using manipulatives with RightStart and other programs.
  3. Is there anyway to teach Khmer? In the past I've taught using the Berlitz method, but I've stopped working for them. I would like something similar as I am a native speaker.
  4. Are there any good digital curriculum that you can download after paying for them? I'm looking to supplement the Phonics Pathways book and I'm also loooking for a good maths curriculum for my 4yr old daughter. I'm looking at Five in a Row and Mammoth Maths which I found by searching the forums. What are the differences? Is one better than the other? Are there any that you would recommend?
  5. Thanks for your answers everyone. I might just stick to the early readers at the library, though a lot of them contain sight words.
  6. We finished doing ABC Reading Eggs and we're now planning to start my 4 yr old daughter on Phonics Pathways and Reading Pathways (we're not homeschoolers...). I feel that she needs to read real books and I was hoping that the Rod and Staff books might help her continue her reading practice. Has anyone tried Rod & Staff Bible Nurture Grade 1 series? Does it provide good phonics practice? I'm concerned by what is written on the site: "It would assume a child would be about 6 years of age to begin the first grade program". My daughter is not a typical 6 year old, but she has developed enough reading skills to read the "Early reader books" from our library. Also, what are your thoughts on their maths program?
  7. How important are physical manipulatives really? Could you just use any physical objects around the house - coins, beans, etc with Abeka Maths or are programs that use manipulatives are designed in such a way that the lessons tie into using the manipulatives? I know the Well-trained Mind book stressed it's importance. And I could see that my 4 yr old daughter will find it helpful. But couldn't you just use beans and coins, or whatever is lying around the house?
  8. What is CIMT-MEP? If it's a webiste, could you provide the link? I can't find it in any of the forums.
  9. I would like to prepare my 4 year old for Kindie next year. I've been looking at some programs suggested by the well-trained mind book - I particularly like the Abeka Maths program (because of our religious background we might want to use their other materials if it's a good program), but I'm also considering developmental maths and maths-u-see. We live in NSW, Australia and I'd like whatever program she's on to reflect what she'll learn. The NSW Board of Ed posted that she will be covering stuff like: count aloud to 30 and recognise numbers from 1 to 20 manipulate objects such as counters to help add and subtract numbers recognise the value of currency, eg 20 cent piece, five dollar note count backwards from a given number in the range 0 to 20 name the days of the week and seasons tell the time to the hour, eg four o’clock identify and name simple shapes, eg circles, squares use positional terms, eg between, under, right, left recognise that halves are equal parts What do you think about using Abeka or some other US based program to cover an Australian based curriculum? Thanks in advance
