  1. Your right! Thanks for the clarity. Up until this year, he has been tracking at grade level. I guess we need to re-evaluate. And I am sorry-what is CLE and TT?
  2. Help! I am at my wit's end. We used Calvert Math for the past two years (2nd and 3rd grade) but decided to switch to Saxon for 4th grade. Why the switch in the first place? My son hated Calvert, and it was a daily battle to get him to finish his math assignments. I decided that we had better make a switch to a math curriculum he enjoyed. He used Saxon in first grade and did really well, so I thought we would switch back to Saxon. Well, things have not gone as planned! He is falling terribly behind, hates math, and battles with me daily about doing his math work. I have come to realize that this may not be about curriculum choices but about my child simply hating math. Now I don't know where to turn. Will any curriculum work? I need a program that is going to help him at least try to enjoy math. Apart from Saxon/Singapore/Calvert/Abeka/Math-U-See, I don't know what exists. He is not a math wizard, so he needs something that breaks math down into manageable pieces that make sense! Any advice would be great. On a side note, it was recommended to us that we use 5/6 Saxon math (even though he is in 4th grade) because Saxon seems to be lagging behind other curriculums. That is what I was told through various sources anyway. So, we are in the 5/6 book this year. Maybe we should just go to 3/4 math? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  3. We used Peace Hill Press curriculum in first grade and used the second grade curriculum at the beginning/middle of second grade but stopped due to time constraints with Calvert, so I am not new to this kind of curriculum. We already finished SOTW Ancient Times in first grade. The consequences are that he has to retake the test if he fails the first, and if he fails again he is required to go to public school until the next testing period. Maybe I am overly concerned, but the consequences are dire if he does not do well.
  4. I am not knew to homeschooling but each year I feel like I am STILL trying to figure it out! We used Calvert last year for my second grader. I loved it because I felt that it gave me the structure I needed to get through the year. However, this year, I find some of the stuff laughable. I am fine (not thrilled) with their science and math, but I feel like some of the curriculum is really basic. For example, we were instructed to write a composition on hugs...HUGS! My third grader about died of laughter. He couldn't believe it. And the questions were so awkward i.e. ask your child why they like hugs...seriously? I have decided to get the Peace Hill Press third grade bundle and we started the lessons today to supplement. I couldn't believe it. We have gone over pronouns literally like once or twice in Calvert and pronouns are in the very first set of lessons in the grammar book. Now I am completely overwhelmed with this idea that we are really far behind because of a dumbing down of the Calvert curriculum in some areas! Suggestions? We have to test this year, so I am a little freaked by this idea that I have screwed up his schooling. And don't even get me started on their spelling curriculum...
  5. Sorry about the typos...I am using the iPhone to type.
  6. Hello... I have a question for you all. Last year, I did a hodge-podge of stuff for my then first grader. It was a disaster! I was unexpectedly pregnant with my third, we had just moved and we were remodeling our new house. I was about to give up on homeschooling forever! This year, however, we are using the Calvert curriculum through an online charter school. I really enjoy having my lessons planned out everyday and access to teachers, plus...the curriculum is free through the charter school, but I feel like the lessons do not provide freedom when it comes to spending less time in some areas and more times in others. I also feel like the history is lacking quite bit, and with the intense lessons, I feel like I could never add Latin or any other subject to the mix. Do you all have any thoughts?
  7. Hello all, I am new to homeschooling, and I am still trying to figure things out. I purchased the Story of the World: Vol. 1 for my first grader. Today, however, I went to see what we would be using for next year, and this is where my confusion came in. Are we supposed to use Vol. 1 up until 4th grade? For some reason, I thought there was a different book for each grade level. I am totally lost on this one. What are you guys using for history with each grade level? Or are you all just reusing the Vol. 1 up until 4th grade? Hope that makes sense...I am running on little sleep today. Page
