I did want to add that we had done MUS all the way through Zeta before we did the Chalkdust Math I mentioned in my earlier post. I wanted a good solid year of reviewing the basics of math before we moved on, and it has provided that. It also presented some of the concepts in a deeper way than we experienced in MUS.

We are doing Chalk Dust's Basic Math (the one just before pre-algebra), and like it quite a bit. It can be frustrating, however, because the textbook is written for a college-age student. I have found that many of the problems and examples are based on subjects that my 6th grader is unfamiliar with.
I'm not sure what we will be doing next year for pre-algebra and am looking forward to reading these responses.

I sweep up all the loose dirt/crumbs first, then spray the floor with Simple Green. After is sits for a moment or two, I put a damp towel on each foot and skate around the kitchen.

I started out in Indiana, moved to Florida at age 11, and to Kentucky in my mid-twenties. I would love to get back to Florida. It where I consider "home".

We moved into R&S 3, and it has worked well. Since we do daily sentence dictation in spelling, I try to include some of the concepts we are covering in grammar in the sentences I have her write.

My son, who enjoys reading, has done well with both Bob Jones Science and Apologia General Science. For reasons I will not bore you with, he complete BJU Science 6 in the 5th grade, but I did not want to put him BJU Life Science because I had heard that it was quite difficult and wanted to wait until he was in 7th grade. This gave us a year to use Apologia General Science and he has really done well and has worked independently.
If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to elaborate.

I think I have a link to what you want saved on "My Favorites" on our family computer. I will check and get back with you soon. Right now we are having monitor woes and my dh has to do some equipment shuffling before I can get to it.

That was such useful information. I can't tell you have thankful I am for your taking the time to respond in such detail. I think I am going to give it a try!

All of the reviews I have found on-line (Old Schoolhouse, etc) have praised it, but I would love to hear from some of you to hear your opinions.

I have used stevia as a sweetner for many years, and though I do not always like the characteristic taste of it, I am hesitant to embrace Truvia at this point. My concern is that it is as far removed from the actual stevia plant as Splenda is from sugar cane.

I am having similar issues with my 3rd grade daughter. It is not so much that I have a problem with her making mistakes here and there, but that I get a real sense that she truly does not care if it is right or not. Her attitude appears to be "just turn it in and say it is done so I can be reunited with my Polly Pockets." When I was her age, it was very important to me that I do things correctly, so it really upsets me to see such apathy.
In many ways I have enabled this behavior to continue by not checking her work before she was allowed to play every day. This is usually because I have put way too many outside responsibilities to our HS co-op on my plate, and I am usually rushing to prepare for a class, update the website, send out a newsletter, etc. I don't see her mistakes or skipped problems until it is too late for her to be accountable. She, of course, has to correct them the next day, but somehow, this is not enough to stop the behavior.
In an effort to correct my behavior, and I hope hers as well, I have started to unloaded some of my outside responsibilities and am setting boundaries on the times of day I answer the phone (usually co-op related calls), so I can be more engaged in what she is doing. I will now be checking all of her work and requiring corrections on the current day's assignments before she is sent on her way.

Before you decide upon a price, you might want to check the Math-U-See website. I know they have a new edition coming out soon and this might effect your answer. I'm not sure if Alpha is among the first ones being redone, however.

We began homeschooling as a result of some issues that were brought about by NCLB. First, our school had a hyper-focus on "the test". Secondly, all of the energy and special attention was placed on getting all the kids up to average. If a child was already working well at grade level, or perhaps above, little was done to challenge them.

My son loved the Gary Paulsen books (Hatchet and The River), though I don't know if one would consider them to be classics.

We are getting ready to do this in our science co-op class. The kids are quite excited!

For what it is worth, we used Hooked on Phonics for both of my kids. What I really liked about it was that it taught a few sounds/blends and then provided the kids with stories/books that contained only the sounds they had learned, along with a couple of sight words that were taught in the lesson sprinkled in. It set them up for success.
In order to give Hooked on Phonics a fair-handed endorsement, however, I must say that the lessons are not the most interesting (long word lists drills) and some creativity on the part of the parent is helpful.
I hope this helps,

but now I can"t find it. It was on a website with several other online videos for kids. Does anyone know where I can find it? I have done several internet searches using all the key words I can think of.
Thanks so much,

I will need to make a decision soon, and this information will help me in the process.

I am using FFL 1-2 right now and really like the format. My daughter has learned and retained a great deal, and I would love to move on to FLL 3. Here is the rub. I already have access to a "free" Rod and Staff English 3 for next year.
Here is my question for those who have used both programs at this level. How do the two programs compare in ease of use, student retention, parent/student enjoyment. I do plan on getting Writing With Ease, so I will not be using the writing component of R & S.
Thanks for any insight you might have,

Sorry...I posted this as a reply, but had the intention of posting a new thread.

A friend of mine is considering homeschooling her daughter in kindergarten before enrolling her in a Montessori charter school in her community for first grade. The school does not offer kindergarten at this time.
What suggestions would you have for this mom?
Thanks for your input,

My son is in 5th grade and will be finishing up MUS Zeta by the end of this year. We got ahead for reasons I will not bore you with. He is not struggling by any means, but I know he would benefit from another year with the basics before moving on to pre-algebra (our plan is Chalkdust pre-algebra in the 7th grade).
Here is my question. For next year, what program should I use. I could use Chalkdust's Basic Math program for 6th graders alongside the supplemental Singapore that we already use. Or I could use a less expensive program like Saxon for a year before moving into Chalkdust. I am not exactly sure which level of Saxon would be appropriate, but am assuming it would be the one just before their pre-algebra course.
Any guidance or direction would be helpful. I want him to have a good foundation, but I don't necessarly want him taking a math vacation for a year.
Thanks in advance,
Mandy
Almost done with MUS Zeta- what next?

I'm not sure if the above post questioning the need for a change was written to me or not, but I thought I would chime in just in case:
Though I think Chalkdust has given a good solid year of review, I'm not sure it would be the best choice for my son in covering completely new concepts. My concern is that it would go too fast for him. Of course, I'm concerrned that MUS pre-algebra would not be difficult enough. It seems that I am just hard to please. :001_smile:
