  1. I second LiveMocha. I really like that site and it's helped me a lot. Two other free resources that I like are French in Action: http://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html

and this free open course by Carnegie Melon. It has really helped my French tremendously. It might be too hard, though, for someone who is just starting to learn the language.

  2. Wow Maria, I'm so sorry about your boyfriend! I do hope that his next surgery will give him his vision back!

I see floaters almost all the time-especially one big one right in front of my eye. It even comes up when it's dark or dusky out. But the flashes happen like you explained, when I turn my eyes a certain way.

I'm going to try to call for an appointment tomorrow. I am not sure who to call. I am hoping that ophthalmologists take payments. I am scared of having to have surgery because I'm afraid it will cost a fortune. Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing :)

Thank you for all the replies.

  3. I tried to go on a raw diet once, and was able to keep it up for about 2 months, but the cost is what did me in. I couldn't afford it. I wasn't spending anywhere near the amount you are describing, though. I think it was about $75 a week for groceries for myself. I was also buying barley green and juicing carrots. The juicing got expensive. Is he taking a lot of supplements? I can understand why he wants to stay on it, I really did feel a lot better while I was on it. Peanut butter does not work on a raw diet because you really aren't supposed to eat peanuts raw.

  4. Personally, when the retina is in question, I would not trust an optometrist.
Yikes! So this isn't something I could see a regular doctor about? Sounds expensive, but I don't want to not see a doctor if I have to.

Optical migraine--they are usually not accompanied by pain, as the name suggests. With an optical migraine you can get floaters or flashes of light. I get these occasionally.
This makes sense since I get really weird "migraines". I don't really get a headache, just a lot of neck pain with terrible nausea and light and smells really put me over the edge. My mom gets severe migraines and she says they're migraines, but I don't get the head pain.
  5. For the past few weeks, I've been seeing spots all the time, I guess you'd call them floaters. Mostly one really large one, but sometimes smaller ones as well. I remembered that about the time it started, I had scraped my eyelid. I don't know exactly how to explain this, but I was reaching down to pick something up and there was this blunt piece of metal sticking out and I must have closed my eye just in time, because it just scraped my eyelid and made it puffy, but didn't actually touch my eye. It hurt really bad. I didn't know until I got to the mirror if it was my eye or not, but thankfully it wasn't.

I've also noticed this past week a couple of times I've "seen stars". I think it happens when I look out of the corner of my eye and then look back. Could I have damaged my eye in some way, or is it just normal to have floaters and I may be reading something into it because I scraped my eyelid?

  6. That's great. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend an evening. It's neat that you know so many! I found a constellation book at a yard sale last month or so. I wasn't able to use it because we were having so much rain. Sounds like it's time to get it out again. We've been having a lot of nice weather here as well.

  7. I have the Better Homes and Gardens cookbood from 1996 and the chili recipe is on page 461, but maybe most of it will be the same:

    12 ounces ground beef

1 cup chopped onion (1 large)

1/2 cup chopped green sweet pepper

    2 cloves garlic, minced

    1 14 1/2-ounce can tomatoes, cut up

1 15-ounce can dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

    1 8-ounce can tomato sauce

2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder

    1/2 teaspoon dried basil, crushed

    1/4 teaspoon pepper

Hopefully someone with the actual edition you have will write, but if not maybe this will help.

  8. Thanks for the advice. I feel like laying down, but I probably need just the opposite. Tonight I'm going to take her dog to the lake. I try to do it every night. I'll try to run with her. She loves it when my sister runs with her, even though I certainly can't run as far as my sister can, she should have fun anyways. For some reason, even with training several times a week, I've never been able to run/jog more than 1/2 a mile.

I'm not obsessing, it's just that new things come up every day. I don't mean to sound mysterious. It's very personal so I don't want to say anything online about it, but she's a great kid and she's been through so much.

  9. I am so unbelievable stressed. It is making me literally sick. I've been dizzy and sick to my stomach for about 3 weeks now, but today was the worse. I doesn't help that I drank coffee this morning. For some weird reason I can't handle coffee, not even half a cup. It messes me up-jitteryness, palpitations, etc.) My mom asked me today, "Your face is all red. Why is your face all red, are you sick?" The answer is yes. I am. I can't explain it, just really sick to my stomach and dizzy and like I seriously need to lie down. My sister's going through some terrible things right now and it hurts to see what she has to go through. I can't stand it. I love her, and it just hurts us all. In fact, if you'd pray for her I would really appreciate it.

I'm just wondering, how do you all deal with stress? My body feels like it is in hyper mode right now and I can't seem to relax.

  10. My mom has estrogen-dominance problems and gets severe migraines along with other symptoms. She uses the progesterone cream from Hallelujah Acres and says that it has helped her tremendously. She also had dangerously high blood pressure and it hasn't had any negative effects on it. If anything, it has helped some.

  11. This is going to be a very long night! Have you ever had a salesman at your house at 10:30 at night trying to sell you a vacuum cleaner? He came at 7:00, just minutes after I got home. He wanted to shampoo a room of our house. Dad said he didn't want his carpet shampooed, thank you. He acted like dad was crazy...who wouldn't want their carpets shampooed? It took him about 45 minutes to convince dad to have a room shampooed. It is now 10:30. Has the room been shampooed? Oh, no. He has vacuumed the floor, the couch, the bed even, but still has not shampooed. His partner left. Did she go home? Of course not! She is out seeing if she can get someone to let her give a demonstration! At 10:30 at night? I'm cracking my mom up because I think it's so funny/ridiculous that there's someone here at 10:30 at night, trying to sell us a vacuum cleaner.
