  1. You can find the recipe to make almost anything on Pinterest.  Of course I usually spend more time pinning that making though.  I have gotten some great recipes, including the taco seasoning and dry ranch.  I also found several good recipes for laundry soap.  My favorite one though is a bit time consuming, but really no more than grating bars.

    2c washing soda

2c borax (this can be left out)

    1/2c Dr Bronner's liquid soap (I use the non-scented)

10-12 drops essential oil (I use lemon or lemon grass)

Mix the washing soda and borax well, then pour the liquid over it.  Let it sit for a while, until the soap has soaked into the dry ingredients.  This takes about 15-20mins.  After that, use a potato masher to mash the lumps down in the powder, so it's fine, which can take time, then stir to mix well.  Add oils if you want.

  2. Our neighbor hands out shots of high end whiskey to whatever adults are shepherding little kids around.

I imagine this could get to be a problem if others started doing this.

Generally though, the adult "joviality" doesn't really get rolling until after 9 when the bonfire party starts up down the street.  Half the neighborhood shows up.  The other half is home with the kids, until a spouse comes home for the changing of the guard.

In Germany, we had huge t to ting block parties on post, as most Germans don't t or t.  Kids did go t or ting, but the adult generally all knew each other, and put out foods (there were loads of crockpots full of hot foods and dips), drinks, etc and it was a merry party.  One of our neighbors always had a huge pot of Gluhwien (recipe here) that they handed out to the parents, and another passed out cups of just wine, and another hot chocolate.  I generally  had a pot of Russian tea that didn't have alcohol.  Halloween is generally quite cold, so warm drinks were always appreciated.  When t or ting was over, we all just hung out.  It was so much fun.  I miss those days.  Since we're on post this year, we may do the non-alcoholic hot drinks for the parents.

I just wonder what ARE teens allowed to do?  They are too young and too old for everything it seems.

They are expected to be mature, but aren't allowed to do anything mature people get to do.

Exactly.  They're in the weird stage between being a kid and being an adult, and there aren't a lot of options.

What bothers me most are parents with very young babies.  We've had people with babies less than a year old come by trick or treating.  Yeah, right. We know who's eating that candy!  IMO if you feel the need to take such a little one out for their first Halloween, it should be to the homes of grandparents and aunties and best friends.

Urgh, this!  For Han Solo's first  Halloweens (6 months and 18 months), we took him out, as Indy was going, and we always refused the candy people offered him, because we didn't need it.  Many of them tried to give it to Indy instead, but we told them no, because he didn't need more.  He was quite put out with us if it was good candy.  :)  On of the people a block over always gave out full size candy bars, so that one really upset him. ;)

  3. I love the glass water bottle linked above but I am WAY too clumsy to carry around a $15 glass bottle :) I think if you buy them new the jars are $.75. And I don't usually drink from the rims. I use a stainless steel straw. Although to be honest drinking with the threading there doesn't bother me at all. I just like straws.

That bottle is STRONG!  I've dropped it many times and it hasn't broken.  They also have some that have more silicone covering on the outside, like this.  I get so many comments on it.

100% do NOT post picture of your perky boobs, clothed or no. Just don't do it. No no no. I would be alarmed to see that on my FB feed.

    It was a joke.

  4. Who DOESN'T record themselves singing and driving??   ;)  No, we have done it before, and when we were done, we handed the phone/ipad to the kids in the back. They watched it over and over, laughing like loons the whole time.  Han Solo is a really big fan of seeing himself on "bideo," so it keeps him entertained for quite a while.

I store my green smoothies in a jar because I like to make a big batch and have them ready throughout the day. Dd takes hers to work sometimes.
I think they're pretty in jars. Reminds me of homemade jams and preserves so it's a comforting image.

Can you pre make your green smoothies???  I've wondered, because I usually make them as I drink them, and that's a pain in the arse.  How long are they good in the fridge?  A few hours or a day?  Are you talking smoothies or juicing?

Many people also use mason jars instead of plastic drink bottles. You can even get coffee shop type soppy lids for them and sleeves so you can hold them when filled with hot liquid.

I drink out of mason jars because water tastes better in glass. YES IT DOES!!!  James Bond thinks I'm crazy, but I hate drinking water out of a plastic cup.  Ack.  Every time we go to a restaurant that uses plastic glasses (why would you do that???), I tell the server to get me a real glass from the bar.  No plastic glasses for this girl!  I have a hole in the lid with a gasket and a stainless steel straw and I love it :) they do break of course but are cheap enough to replace. Messy to clean up the mess but I still can't go back. I love the taste of my water and the heavy feel of the glass too. I have this glass water bottle that I pink puffy heart.  I take it everywhere, and get comments on it all the time.

I don't want to drink out of a glass with ridges for a lid. I concur.  It's just weird. We have a bunch of tiny mason jars here from when dh did some canning. I don't like mason jars in general because of the two pieces on the lid. They irritate me. They do make special tops that are one piece and have a place for a straw now, but I have issues with straws too.  Unless I have to, I will not use them.

People post images of really injured animals in some attempt to share concern about animal cruelty. I do not like seeing these images and usually hide them so I don't have to keep stumbling upon them.  Good grief, yes!  I hate that.  I love Ricky Gervais, who is an ardent animal supporter, and he's always posting lovely pictures of whatever animal he's talking about.  I had to unfollow or block some of those that put up the horrible photos.  I know it's happening, but I don't want to see it mixed in with photos of my friends' kids, family, and funny stuff.  I would just skim past it, and not even read the message.

I don't like it when people photograph strangers and post commentary about them. Guilty.  In all fairness, I usually get a shot from behind or blur their faces out.  If I do take a photo though, it's because they have on some outrageous outfit or their hair is "intriguing."  I took a photo of a lady once because her hair simply defied gravity, and all laws of physics, and I couldn't figure out how it stayed the way it did. Someone posted on my feed showing a pregnant woman at the OBGYN with a Monster energy drink in her hand and a child next to her. The reason for the photo was to discuss the dangers of drinking an energy drink while pregnant, but did we need to see photos of the people in the waiting room?? I would be pissed if someone was sharing photos of my son (or me). I never take photos of kids.  That's just...weird.

Oh, I hate the food trend.  I don't want to see every freaking thing you eat!  Maybe every now and then, if it's something special or mind blowing (holiday themed/shaped food intrigues me).

I hate the people who check in every 5 minutes, as if we'll all be stressed not knowing their every move.

Do you think it would be weird if I posted a CLOTHED photo of my perky new boobs after they're all healed up?  In case you didn't see my thread, I had a reduction, and they lifted them after they removed the excess tissue.  They's really bruised up right now, but boy are they perky!  We had to go out to dinner tonight, because we had such bad wind today that the power was knocked off all over post, so we couldn't cook.  I got up to go to the bathroom, and when I got back, JB made a comment about how very high and perky and firm they look.  Yeah!    I want to show them off, but that could weird people out.  Yes?  No? :)

  5. We definitely won't be doing the surprise baby here, my tubes were tied, cut and burned during my last C-section.  :D

I've had the insomnia, hair loss (although I have a ton of thick hair so no real result except finding hair everywhere), agoraphobia (that actually got better when I returned to work), super heavy periods, moodiness/crankiness, extreme tiredness.

I also have a swollen tender gland under my chin right now with absolutely no other signs of illness, well at least except for those listed above.  It happened at least once before that I noticed and went away after a week or so.

Hair loss!  OMG, the hair loss!  I've got enough hair for about 3 people (seriously, hairdressers are always shocked by how much I have), but it is falling out like crazy lately.  There is hair everywhere!  When I wash my hair it's even worse!  My hands come away with clumps of hair.  Yikes.

I am always so tired I can barely function most days.

Further proof that the interwebs are always watching:  I pulled up my home page, and the second story was about they symptoms of perimenopause.  Nice.

  6. I'm so glad to hear this went well!  I've been seriously considering it, as I went from a DD before kids to an H after kids.  My back is shot and my shoulders, too.  DH would be terribly sad, but understands :)   I mostly just wanted to wait until I knew I was done with babies, so I could breastfeed them all without worrying about problems.

Best wishes for smooth book mending :)

You know what's funny?  Almost every person I saw at the hospital asked me what James Bond thought.  I was like, "Um, what does it matter?  He doesn't have to carry this weight around."  FTR, JB was perfectly fine with it.  He said I should do whatever I needed to to make sure my back was feeling better.  I was definitely done having babies, so that's wasn't even an issue.

I had a follow up appt today, and they took some of the medical tape off, which HURT.  The tape pulled off the glue fragments and the top layer of skin that had shed.  Ouch!  Other than being bruised to bits, they look quite nice.  There is a weird bit of lumping on the outer edges of both, but they said that should go down, and if not, they'd lipo the extra fat under it, or take some of the skin off.  They would do that in the office, under general anesthetic.  Yikes.  That sounds scary.  Aside from the 2 weird little lumps they are perfectly round, high and lovely.  Yay!  I won't be able to lift anything over 10 lbs until Jan, which sucks, and I can't do any upper body work outs until mid Jan.  Boo.  On the up side though, I can now drive, as long as I don't take my narcotics.  I've had to resort to the OxyContin a few nights, because the pain was pretty high.  I can totally see how people can become addicted to OxyContin.  It makes me feel lovely and so relaxed.  Not like sleepy or buzzed relaxed, but happy relaxed, like nothing can bother you.  KWIM?

  7. I always recommend Maca. It may not alleviate everything but it sure has helped me a lot.

What is Maca?  I feel so uncool not knowing!    The only Maca I know of is Paul McCartney.

Ok, what's with all the surprise babies? Are people open to more kids? Trying/hoping for a perimenopause surprise? Or is the bc not working?

We had a surprise baby!  Han Solo was soooooo not planned. There are just under 9 years between Indy and Han Solo.  I turned 41 this year, and HS turned 3 a week and a half later.  I forgot how much work babies and toddlers are!

James Bond got the big V after that, because this ride was officially closed until he got that taken care of.  I had an IUD put in a few weeks ago because my periods had gotten so heavy it was ridiculous.  We are now double protected.  If I get pregnant, there are two doctors I'm going to hunt down and have serious words with.  None of them will be nice.

  8. SOB, I guess that's what's happening to me too.  I'm 41, and I've been experiencing many of these things.  Actually all of them.  Sometimes I wake up at night completely drenched in sweat, and can feel it running down my back.  Ick!

Two weeks ago when I had my pre-op registration, the lady checking me in started fanning herself, and I commented on how hot it was in there.  The lady next to her, looked at us both like we'd lost our minds, and said that it was actually quite chilly.  The lady checking me in looked at me and said "Do you think we're hot flashing together?"  Heaven help me.

My family is making me so crazy.  Of course that could be because James Bond has been home all week to "help" while I recover, and he's really done very little, unless I badger him (you know, like cooking for the kids!), and having him around all the time is just...annoying.  Everything the boys do makes me want to run and hide for no reason.  I had a mental breakdown last week over my weight.  I'm not obese, but I weigh more than I've ever weighed, including my pregnancies.  Granted, I only gained 14 lbs and 17 lbs during the pregnancies, but still, I now weigh more!  I've always suffered from anxiety, depression, and apparently bi-polar disorder, but meds have kept it under control until recently.  My doc upped my meds to see if it would help, but 2 weeks in, when I should start feeling any changes, there's nothing.  Hormones suck.

  9. I'm starting to switch our plastic containers to glass.  As for the bathroom, well, glass is dangerous with a toddler (And a tween.  And a husband).  I do keep the q-tips and cotton balls in glass containers, but they still come in plastic packaging.

The biggest change we've made has been in paper products.  I always use reusable bags for shopping, and we have cut way back on paper.  I cut up a bunch of the large flour sack towels into 4 pieces, and fold them in half.  They are stacked on the counter, and we use them for cleaning up spills, wiping down the tables, counters, and light cleaning.  We use all cloth napkins too.  I use all white, so I can soak them together (in non-chlorine bleach), before washing them.  We have a small trash can in the kitchen where we toss them after they've been used.  I do keep a roll of recycled paper towels in the kitchen, but we almost never use them.  We went from using 1 roll a week to maybe 1 roll every month and a half, if that.  I buy recycled toilet tissue (either the Trader Joe's brand or Marcell brand-make sure not to get the single ply).

I have a glass water bottle that I carry with me everywhere, but the boys still have plastic, because, well, boys.  I think the important thing is to start with small steps, rather than try to do it all at once.  Too many changes at one time can become overwhelming, especially to your family who might think you've lost your mind.  Ask me how I know.

  10. Thanks everyone.  Tues and Wed were really rough for some reason, but I'm a little better today.  Of course Tues and Wed could be because I insisted on going to the grocery store with James Bond on Monday, even though JB told me I shouldn't.  I hate it when he's right.

I've heard people wake up with a sense that something is missing (excluding the obvious, of course) and that they realize it's the back pain they've gotten so used to. Was that your experience? My sister said she couldn't figure out why she felt weird until she realized that such a familiar pain was gone.

No, no sense of loss yet.  I don't really know if it's made the back pain better yet, as I've been on some pretty strong pain killers.  Once I'm off of them, we'll see how it goes.  I'm certainly smaller, now that the swelling has really gone down, and honestly, they're quite perky. ;)  Of course I'll really be able to tell, once the tape and glue are gone.  They didn't use stitches, but glued the skin together (it's a bit puckery still) and covered in waterproof tape,  I think they're either taking the tape off tomorrow or next week.

  11. I so want to be able to say "but DT is awesome"...but I can't ): It makes me sad too.

It's like the American accent doesn't let him emote or use his face. Couldn't he have been a detective that moved to GP from Scotland?!

Yes, this would have made it so much better!  His face is aways so....straight.  Can't he move his cheeks every now an then, or do something other than scowl?

  12. Best wishes for an easy recovery!

Did your surgeon have any idea why the girls keep growing? Is it blamed on estrogen? I am kind of wondering if they would shrink once the body is post menopausal, just like after weaning, but it didnt work that way for my neighbor.

He had no idea why they kept growing, but he said with removing the tissue and rearranging the muscles, they shouldn't grow any more.  I hope not.

Wishing you a speedy, uncomplicated recovery! (Did you save the extra? I could use a little more....) ;)

LOL!  My cousin asked if she could be on the table next to me and have them pump with they took out of me, into her.  She's had 3 kids and is still flat as a pancake.

  13. LOL, I like to read them, but couldn't bring myself to write one. Basically, I kept it something I wouldn't be embarrassed to have my mom or priest read, lol.

Aww, come on, let your freak flag fly.  I recently posted my first really naughty fanfic and it got rave reviews.  Who would have thought???  I felt weird writing it at first, but once I got into it, it became easier.  James Bond read it, and said not only was it super hot, but it was really well written.
