  1. Agreeing with everyone and clarifying further:

"Like" is a preposition to be followed by an object.

Your example quoted above is incorrect. To use "I am" you would use "as" (conjunction) instead of "like".

The two correct ways of saying the same thing are:

"No one in my class is like me."

    OR

"No one in my class is as I am." Yes, it sounds stuffy, so people use like in this context, incorrectly, quite frequently.

Very good. Thank you for this!

  2. To me, it sounds like a mom's natural bonding with her young son is being threatened. I feel for you.

My experience with local so-called top-notch schools was not that impressive, once I really observed the day-to-day happenings. Looking back, having my child in our home environment was important in so many ways (esp at the young ages). As time moved on, academics took a more serious role; hs'ing offered opportunities that would have been impossible in a traditional school setting.

When I was in similar shoes many years ago, I chose the hs'ing route. I believe we share a priceless closeness because of that decision. Not always easy, but absolutely no regrets.

    Follow your heart.:)

  3. We used calvert through PaCyber, a virtual school in our state. I didn't get past 3rd grade, sure I'm not much help... anyway, we just found Calvert (and many have agreed in our co op) very writing intensive. A lot more work as PP has already said. It was torture for DS. My main point in chiming in really is that, if you do have a state with cyber schools maybe you'd want to check into one of those. If they have Calvert and if you are wanting to use Calvert for your entire curriculum... it's paid for with your taxes and if you don't like it you can always withdraw and return to what you are already doing. I didn't use the virtual classes but I have heard a lot of good things about them. We would have given them a shot but with DH's work schedule we don't want to be tied to a computer certain hours of the day.

Unfortunately, we have no cyberschool options available at this time.

It probably would not be a bad idea for my dd to be concentrating more on writing (she is 7th gr). I do not feel competent in that area, and she may respond better to another instructor.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Calvert.:)

  4. so glad i could help... it IS really expensive... did you see the calvert group?

    best wishes, amy

The cost is definitely a concern. I'm sort of thinking of trying the ATS for a semester (beginning 7th) to get a feel for Calvert. If all goes well, we could do the VA for 8th.

I did see the group (thank you!) and am working my way through prior discussions. Good way to continue the investigation process.

  5. my impressions....

well, i have a love/hate relationship with calvert. we want to get our school work done and do other things... we have 5 kids (ages 11-14 months) and we hope for at least one or 2 more. i would spend so much time planning that we wouldn't actually get to the "doing" if i picked/choosed. so i like it being all planned out. is it the right fit in each subject for each child? no. but, it passes the muster for me and i don't feel like i am leaving anything out, kwim?

they are getting a ton more than they would if they were in school still, btdt!

it is ALOT of work ... so i would consider it a rigourous (sp) curriculum. i am interested to see if the ATS is worth the extra $$. still half as much as any catholic school in our area.

does this help? my main complaint is we spend a lot of time doing school this year. we are going to change it next year to shorter days/every 40 lessons a week off, and less summer break. i have one that is too detailed and makes everything more than it really needs to be. bless her heart. and i have a foot dragger, that spends a lot of time looking out the window... and a 1st grader who is learning to read and needs me next to her. then there is the 4 year old and 1 year old...ok, enough of a book.

i just don't feel the need at this season in my life to reinvent the wheel, kwim? and i mean no disrespect the the "other side" here.

    amy:)

    Amy,

My head spins, thinking about all that you have on your plate. You sound as if you are forging ahead with a solid, proven program and getting the job done. I admire your dedication.

I am leaning towards trying Calvert for a semester with the virtual academy. More than once I've found references supporting the program as being superior to the average private/ps system. At this point in our hs'ing journey, I think my dd would benefit from the VA. I'll be calling the Calvert reps with lots of questions.

    Thanks for sharing.:)

  6. hi, i have used calvert for 4 years with 3 kids (and 2 more to go!) but not the VA. however, there is a yahoo group for calvert that will have opinions both ways...

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Calvert/

hope this helps a bit... we are using the ats this year for the first time (6th)

    good luck--

    amy

Thank you, Amy. I will investigate the yahoo group and hopefully find some input.:)

btw, what has been your overall impression of Calvert?

  7. Hi Fran,

    You are very welcome! :001_smile:

In the meantime, I've been looking at what I have bookmarked. This was an great program to begin with, French for Kids by Kids:

They have a number of different programs.

Otherwise, if you want to try immersion, CNED has some of their products for free on this site: http://www.academie-en-ligne.fr/Default.aspx

Click on "ecole" on the left, choose your level, and then choose "francais". You can get whole books of curriculum for free, if you are willing to print them.

http://www.ladictee.fr/ is another site I have bookmarked that I haven't really explored. Again it's immersion but there might be something useful there.

That should give you almost too much to get started! ;) I hope you and your dc have fun learning this wonderful language! :001_smile:

Great! You've done the hard part for the rest of us -- and so generously sharing your efforts is sincerely appreciated :hurray:.

  8. I notice through the Homeschool Buyers Co-Op that I could get Tell Me More French at a discount. I have a few questions and could surely use help...

    1) In your opinion, is Tell Me More French a solid program for high school

    level French?

    2) I have never ordered through the Co-Op (I am a member, though).

Is this a good way to order curriculum?

Thanks so much for any opinions/advice. :)

  9. I did not like Power Glide (Speak) when I looked at it a loooong time ago. I get really irritated with programs who set up English sentences and then extract words, replacing them with words in the language you are learning. French is not constructed like English and I find it goofy trying to teach it this way. Perhaps they've changed but ...... that's my 2 cents ....:001_smile:

We are using Tell Me More for French and my dd really enjoys doing it, so much that she'll do it after school hours. It's quite comprehensive and I like that it immerses the child in the language with help if you need it. Even so, we don't use it as a stand alone program; we use other supplementary material to learn the language well.

    HTH! :001_smile:

Dyan, thanks so much (very helpful). Looks like I need to firm up my French program research.
