  1. Does anyone study American history and World history together? Do you use a 4 year cycle? Do you try to line up the Am history to fit the world history so they are both at the same time period?

How do you study both at the same time? What do you use?

Lots of questions, sorry about that. Just looking for some ideas :)

  2. Well the whole Pluto thing is kind of new, so that chapter may have been written when Pluto was still a planet, but I'm not sure.

If you look at reviews on Amazon, a few of them also point out other historical errors but in my humble opinion, finding something that is completely accurate is very difficult, if not impossible.

I think its great that your daughter could point out something she knows isn't right. Means she's paying attention :tongue_smilie:.

*Disclaimer* My kids are still little and I have not used SOTW yet. Also I'm a little bitter about Pluto...

I also have a two and a half year old and I LOVE the ideas in this thread!

I bought the book Slow and Steady, Get me Ready by June Oberlander (recommended in WTM) and flipping through it got tons of ideas for fun activities to do with my little ones. It lists activities by week of age from birth to five but you don't have to follow it in that order, you can pick and choose at your leisure.

Otherwise, I just love the ideas in this thread. Right now I'm working on establishing more of a routine for the day for my sanity and to help my son.

  4. I just finished reading it and didn't find anything offensive or worrisome as a non-christian. The whole book is written like a story, sometimes including thoughts of the historical "characters" and dialogue that didn't actually happen. Jewish beliefs are talked about, as well as roman beliefs and Celtic beliefs, and so forth. I don't remember reading anything that said that one of those beliefs were true while the others weren't.

I found the narrative a bit disjointed because I wanted more depth however I do think it is appropriate for logic stage children. It is written conversationally which was a bit off-putting at times, but that's a matter of taste and preference.

  5. When I got the book (I think my children were similar ages when I got it), I started at their age. If my son (the older child) requested to "do school", I would look back and find an activity we hadn't done yet.

Sometimes my son would see me doing an activity with his sister and he would want to do it, too. So when I was done with her, I'd do it with him. I mark in the corner what activities I've done with each child.

Thank you! Great idea about marking the activities after they are done :)

  6. I think Explode the Code lines up pretty well with OPG, at least for the beginning levels. Get Set, Get Ready and Go for the Code works on consonant letter sounds and then starts with short vowel sounds in level 1. At a certain point they no longer line up (I want to say level 3 or 4) but you can still use the workbooks either in order or mixed up and made to line up with OPG.

  7. I think 2 is good. It does say to continue doing the older activities as you progress, so why not. This way you can move forward and pick and choose from the older suggestions what you feel your children need. It's lots of fun too. Enjoy!!!!

    :D

Thank you! I'm leaning towards 2 too.

  8. I just received the book Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready from amazon and after browsing through it, would like some help from the hive.

My children are 2 1/2 and 6 months old, so starting from the very beginning doesn't seem like the best way. I went to the week that they are both at and read around to see if they "place" somewhere near it. And then I browsed further back (year one stuff) and saw lots of fun activities I'd like to do with my oldest.

Pretty much I'm unsure how to approach the book in a structured and systematic way. I have a few ideas and would like to hear from anyone about what they would do in my situation.

    1) Start at the week (or a little before) that they are at age wise (both my children are pretty normal development, except my son is behind in language.) Continue on from there, week by week and forget the earlier stuff for each.

    2) Start at the week that they are at age wise and work forward and backward at the same time, working on new skills and "reviewing" old skills with new activities. (My concern on this one is that it seems skills build on earlier skills but I'm not sure if that is the case.)

    3) Start at the beginning, skipping any activities that the children wouldn't like or are over developed for and moving forward. (I'd probably start somewhere in year one for my two year old since the infant development is way too young for him).

    4) Not worry about structure and just pick an activity that seems appropriate each week. (This would probably be the most work and would take more planning ahead then just opening the book and following the directions.)

While I already interact with my children daily, reading to them and playing with them, I am looking for more structure. I'm not good at just thinking of things on the fly. I need the hand holding in structuring "preschool" for my kids without making it work for them or "school". I'm looking more at how to help them develop through play and real experiences rather than working on academic skills (which they are too young for and I'm not planning on doing anything really academic until first grade.) I purchased a few more things for my son (music cd's, some storybooks, french cd's) that I want to expose him to as well, but I'm fine doing that unstructured. I guess I feel if I'm told to do something, I'm more likely to do it lol.

I hope my ramblings made sense. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
