  1. I do my main shopping once per week and stop to pick up odds and ends once or twice per week. My supermarket is probably one mile away or less. It's really close.

I shop weekly because we like lots of fresh produce and also because we have no extra storage space.

  2. We've started trying to buy all canned beans from Eden Organic, which is BPA free, and tomato products in glass only.

Now you have me wondering about something though. I buy the large bottles of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Costco, but they are sold in plastic bottles. I never thought about this being a concern until you mentioned the grease or fat thing above. Should I make sure I only buy EVOO in glass bottles going forward?

I hadn't considered olive oil and the kind I buy comes in plastic. Bleh.

  3. I do not have a link, but I would point out that it is acknowledged that extended rear-facing is not safer in the case of an accident where the child's car is rear-ended.  (Which happens to be the only kind of serious accident my kids and I have ever been in.)  The popular links way understate the prevalence of rear-enders because they are looking from the perspective of the car doing the hitting - it's a front-end crash to the hitter, but it's a rear-ender to the car that is hit.  Just a word to the wise for interpreting the linked info.

I rear-faced until 2.5 for what it's worth.  I did it because I felt that was best from the perspective of my own kids' development.  They were on a slow curve physically.

I agree that info is the best thing to offer.

Does anyone have a link to back this up? Everything I'm reading states that over 95% of accidents are head-on or side-impact collisions and that RFing offers significant spinal and limb protection in those cases.

  4. Why don't you use the "Assessment and Activities" at the end of each chapter? The Teacher's Edition has brief answers for each question. Also, there are some nice essay questions on the College Board website for AP World History.

    Here is the link: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_information/216943.html

Thanks for the link! We may end up just using the chapter reviews as tests. The thought had crossed my mind.

  5. I've not had it done. My tummy is flat but I've got stretch marks and wrinkling that comes from carrying babies. It's nothing that bothers me and I'm not sure that adding a scar to the mix down there would make me happier, in any case.

I know ladies that have had tummy tucks and/or breast work and they were pleased with the results immediately. My friends with implants all had some side effects, from mild rippling to noticeable capsular contracture that required follow up surgery. One of my friends eventually elected to have her implants removed. One of them had hers re-done after about 10 years. Several of my friends need to have them re-done but have put it off.

Three of my friends have gone on to have other procedures done as well -- botox, lip injections, chemical peels, etc. -- in their late 20s and early 30s, which seem fairly young for that sort of thing to me, but who am I to say? They say that it makes them happy.

I had a breast reduction when I was 19 and have never, ever regretted it for even one second. I also had braces for cosmetic reasons twice.

  6. Actually, no amount of stomping feet and yelling from anti-science blogs that the pseudoscience for creationism and intelligent design isn't outdated, misrepresented and misinformed is going to change the fact that it is not good, real, or relevant to our times.

I don't know anyone who believes that the process of science is pure or untainted by any worldview bias, but what makes science different is that it's not based on fairy tales, it's not based on faith, and ultimately the misinformation and misinterpretations will be corrected when better information is available. YE Creationism cannot be "scientific" because it starts from the assumption that the scripture of one particular religious group contains scientific facts that can never be disproved, and it attempts to prove an unprovable hypothesis: that God exists. That is not science, and it will never be science, even if a handful of Christians with science degrees, and lots of dishonest bloggers, claim it is.

Yes to all of this, but esp the bolded. Creationism is not science, period. Creationism is built upon premises that, by their very definition, can never be proven or disproven. Those premises are not testable. That is not science. Creationism is, in fact, the antithesis of science. It is built upon faith. How can that possibly belong in a science classroom?

  7. We don't even OWN serving dishes. I realize how strange that sounds. Sometimes I put pans on the table, sometimes I transfer food to other dishes for serving. Since we don't have specific serving dishes I just use whatever glass mixing bowls or Pyrex dishes I have handy. They get the job done. :)

  8. Childbirth four times over. It looked like a water hose gushing blood after my second was born. I remember my husband asking if I was supposed to be bleeding that much. The bed was soaked and it was dripping onto the floor.

My ds10 has asthma and was hospitalized for a week due to breathing related complications at age 4.

  9. I'm not sure how receptive your OB will be to your suggestion. I know it's kind of a PITA when you have littles to arrange care for, but it's not a hill I'm willing to die on. I'm already the crazy lady that wants to do everything naturally. I try not to rock the boat more than necessary.

  10. My best friend is my dh and we met in high school.

I have girlfriends that I can go out for pedis or coffee with, talk homeschooling and mom stuff with, etc. Sometimes I initiated conversations with those women and sometimes vice versa.

I used to have a very best girlfriend. We'd been friends since high school. Last year she went through some major life changes and cut me out of her social circle. It hurt (and still hurts) very much. She was my best friend for over 17 years.

None of my current friendships can compare in any way to a relationship that was built over such a long period of time.

  11. If you have a juicer or smoothie maker you might try giving him something with fresh ginger. IDK if you could juice the night before so that it's ready to go in the morning?

He's already forward-facing, which was going to be my next suggestion. Ginger works the best for me (I get carsick somewhat easily). Dramamine works, too, but you don't want to have to give it every single morning and, in any case, it makes them sleepy.

  12. Briefly, when I moved back in with my mom after I left my first husband. She charged me a portion of the mortgage and utilities (it was a small portion and the bills were small to begin with). We're talking maybe a hundred bucks per month or something. It was only because my moving in with a toddler did increase those bills and my mom couldn't afford to cover it. I didn't mind paying. She was giving me a place to live.

  13. Ugh. I *wanted* to make the Diva cup work. I tried and tried and failed with it. IDK what the problem is. I do have a very high cervix and my uterus is tilted the wrong way. I know the gyno always mentions it when I go in for my pap and says it makes the exam a little more uncomfortable than it would be otherwise.

Anyway, it leaked on me sporadically and was a complete nightmare to remove. Cramming my hand all the way up into my lady parts is not exactly my idea of a good time. Maybe I was placing it too high up because I really had to stretch and reach for it and even then there was a time or two when I wasn't sure I'd be able to retrieve it on my own, the suction was *really* tight, and in any case I could feel it every. single. time. I had it in. So...IDK.

I have used those soft cups in the past with no problems.

I don't have a problem with tampons, per se. I was drawn to the Diva because it's eco-friendly, and because I can't swim with a tampon in. I *know* you're supposed to be able to, but mine always end up sopping wet with pool water.
