  1. My daughter started 4th grade using ACE and was extremely bored. We switched to Lifepacs. They go a little faster but she keeps complaining of doing so many different things in one book. So in your opinion that means these are spiral curriculums right? I was wondering if I should get her a different kind next year. I heard MUS is different and works very well. Can anyone give me more ideas or tell me if what I am thinking is correct. If I would use MUS which one should I go with for 5th grade. Thanks so much for all the advice in advance.

  2. I know people have probably answered this in the past but I couldn't find it,what is WWE? I am looking for a good LA curriculum for my daughter which will be in 5th grade. We were using ACE but I am looking for something different this year. Is there anything out there with both grammar and writing or should we combine ? Thanks

  3. My daughter is going into 5th grade and has been using ACE but I am ready to switch, she finds that one boring. When making the switch is there any out there to look for that has both the grammar and writing, or should I look for 2 different ones? What does everyone recommend?

    Thanks

  4. We were using ACE but are looking for something a bit different. I have been reading alot about Jr. Analytical Grammar and Grow with Grammar. Can anyone tell me if they use them and what they like or dislike about them etc. Thanks everyone!

  5. I have been reading this thread and I just had to go see about Analytical Grammer and OMG I really like what I see. I have a daughter in 4th and she thinks ACE is very boring but I looked over the Analytical Grammar Jr. and well it looks really interesting. Has any of you had a 5th grader in this? It claims to be a 11 week program. I'm wondering if I would have to find something else for the rest of the year?

Thanks for any information you have..

  6. I was wondering if anyone here uses public school books as in Mcgraw-Hill, Holt, etc..... I was thinking of using the Mcgraw-hill book with the activity book to go along with it. Has anyone went this route, because from what I read on the boards they don't. Thanks for your responses..

  8. Hi, I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice on a good book for my son in 11th grade. He is not into reading, dislikes anything that "bores" him. I am trying to find a really good book that will really interest him. I was looking at Huck Fin, what age level is that? I don't want to go way below his grade level, that would be just what he'd want. He's using ACE for his curriculum and there's not much in reading as far as good books. More like understanding poems and things like that. He's not going to college but I want him to know how to write good essay papers .... I know I'm rambling but any advice is well appreciated...

    Thanks

  9. My son is in 11th grade and he is not college bound and isn't a fan of lots of reading. I am looking for a good book on his level, because if it were up to him he'd read a book way below his level.. I would like something interesting to a 17 year old boy, as in skateboarding, action, not boring. I know thats not much to go on but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

  10. I am starting Alice in Wonderland with my daughter in 4th grade. Does anyone know of a good website or have one of their own guides to teach this book. I would like things like vocabulary, chapter notes, questions, quizzes. Anything would help. Thanks so much...

  11. we were using ACE when Yacko (then 12) saw CLE at a homeschool conference and ASKED to switch. Stupid mama didn't listen ;) and we ended up switching a year later.

CLE doesn't beat you over the head with their theology the way ACE does, even in their reading and science. Reading is a little heavier on their POV, and from the samples I've seen the Social Studies is pretty heavy, but still lighter than ACE. We use them for grammar, math, and science.

CLE is also significantly more stringent academically. Yacko was working "on" grade level in ACE, and is a year behind in CLE.

CLE is less colorful, but ACE's little cartoons actually annoyed him. He felt they were childish. The addition of Bible to every.little.thing in ACE was smothering, and distracted him from the actual lessons.

It really sounds like a good curriculum. I agree about the Bible smothering. We study Bible, but as far as like Social Studies, she didn't get much out of it because it was mostly about the Missionaries and Bible....as you said alot of smothering. So you find that CLE isn't as bad?

  12. I have my daughter in 4th grade using ACE but I was thinking of switching to CLE for 5th grade. I was wondering how the reading is, do they give you certain books to read? What are the books about? I think that's one of her major things about reading. If the books aren't interesting to her she gets restless with it. I am also wondering about the Social Studies and Science. Let me know if anyone has any advice on this.....Thankssss

  13. I started with ACE social studies but my daughter was very bored. So we are looking for something that could kind of start now and go through 5th grade. Is there anything out there that would work? I am not really good at making my own curriculum. I have only been homeschooling for about 3 years and we'ver pretty much used ACE or Lifepacs. So as I said I am looking for something I could use for social studies for 4th and into 5th if thats possible. Thanks in advance!!!!

  14. I would like to read the Alice in Wonderland book to my daughter (4th grade). I would like to get into the book with her before we go see the movie. I am trying to teach her that a book has far more details that movies, I want her love reading without pushing her into it. I find if I push her to read she seems to not want to as much. I guess thats like most children. Could you please tell me which book (author) would be the best one to get from the library?

    Thanks

  15. The more I read these posts, the more I see CLE becoming popular. I have been thinking about this curriculum lately too. My 4th grader started out with ACE but, she has gotten bored with the math, social studies, science, we then switched to lifepacs. They are a little better. Has anyone switched from any of these to CLE or just give me any advice about CLE. She is very smart and catches on quickly to things, so I would like to make sure she is being challenged. I feel like I am barely teaching her anything. Thanks in advance!!!!!
