my 11 yr old son has gone thru sow bks slowly. so now were in gr.6 doing SOW4.in AG looks like SWB does outline for kids.considering hes older should after some time i have him doing SOW outlines without referring to the ones in AG.how long are the written summaries .summaries the same as narrations just written down? Do you all do assigned redaing for science, poetry ? how long? How long free reading?
im doing schedule and tryinng to get my head around logic stage child.
trying to do things diffrently this yr
thanks

do you all follow wtm method to teach history? Do you make outline one day?
summary another? look up in atlas and on the globe? make timelines.
it seeems like alot work . Can you clarify for me which days you do diffrent
history activities;outlining, summaries, research, redaing.how many times week
you do it and on avg how long it takes. im doing schedule this week for fall.
i have 11year old boy and was wondering outside history spine how many days a
week do you set aside structured reading and for how long?(history books
nonfiction or historical fiction thats not part of his independent reading
time.my son not crazy about "structured reading"(we use timer)how make sure they
are actually redaing the material not skimmimg>hes great reader but prefers free
reading where he reads alot fantasy
i really appreciate it your help

i noticed on your sig u use hakim;s books how do you weave it with sow

so i guess for you supplemental reading will only be used in terms essay and need not be read cover to cover on regular basis. alot SOTW AG supp reading are dry like cornerstones of freedom, heinemann etc.i like assigned historical fiction but may do it by minutes instaed of chapters.
still thinking
thanks again for all your patience

when you say SOW assigned reading do you mean the textbook and the SOTW AG the optional skimming is Additional history reading but literature suggestions are what you assign? IN WTM schedule she writes 30-40 min struct redaing wasnt sure what she meant for my 11 year old son.She aslo mentions her mom making her read each week diffrent genres and was confused about that
thanks for your feedback
-
how long does it take for each assigned reading on avg and do you do any other assigned redaing like poetry recommended in WTM
-
the read ings i givehim for historical fiction he doesnt mind but say non fiction book on pioneers(recommend in SOTW AG) i have to ask him to retell it to me otherwise he just skims, also no matter how cool science book i buy like exploding ants if i dont monitor with questions he;ll skim. its drag and im looking for ideas
thanks

i mean how coordinate structured redaing your kids do on their own. thier assigned reading?
thanks
mar
We do history and science as read-alouds esp. at that age. Some people like to do it at a specific time on the couch. I like to read during breakfast and lunch. It gives the kids something to do with their hands and mouths;) while I'm reading. -
In WTM she mentions doing structured redaing on top fun reading.
1.history fiction/nonfiction
2.science
3.poetry
i have gr'6 boy how structure it?
Do do history one day, science another
for how long?
my son sometimes resists doing it and skims the bks. How can you prevent that?
thanks

Did you find it difficult to outline from Kingfisher book. How long do outline and summaries take for a 6th grader.
thanks
mariss
Yes, absolutely. My 6th grader has done HO2 Middle Ages (I assume you're talking about doing History Odyssey level 2 Ancients with your son next year, not level 1, which is for early elementary students)... He did all of the outlining and summary writing. These are *not* meant to be long projects. In fact, one of the great things I think that ds has been learning is how to read and *quickly* distill the most important pieces of information from longer reference material and assimilate it into a brief summary or organized outline.I would certainly assume that if you're doing a demanding writing program in addition to this, that there would be some overlap between longer writing assignments. I would make an effort to combine assignments or make cuts here and there, in order to avoid redundancy.

how long does it take? do you so summaries? did u use SOW 4? and if so did you do research projects. for writing we do creative writing that doesnt involve outlining.
thanks

I have son going into gr.6 next yr. We will finally be finishing off SOW series next yr.might supplemnent with HO
1.Do you do or did outlining or summaries that are recommended in WTM guides when you use SOW 4 or HO.
2.Did you do research projects in SOW 4. Up till now history has been stress free in we just use easy tests, mapwork. We do quite rigorous writing curriculum and im worried the outling, summaries and research projects might turn him off
appreciate your feedback

I was wondering if it was ok on sterelite worbox drawer to have on the left side the number cards and on the right of the sterlite drawer a picture of subject ex. reading(CLIPART OF BOY READING) .its easy for my KiDs to know what is in box and visuually appealing. Also i have small timer card next to SUBJECT CARD so older child doesn't dawdle and has clear timeframe. i havent seen one person do any subject cards next to their numbercards and was wondering if it was ok?
THANKS
