  1. Hi All!

I am a long time lurker on this thread. I actually took a long break from the boards, and I was glad to see that you were still doing the BAW. I always appreciate the suggestions. Just recently I found the Miss Julia Books, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle

So far this week, I've read:

Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind - I really enjoyed this - 4 stars

If the Shoe Kills - pretty standard cozy mystery - 3 stars

    Wicked Fix - 3 stars

We Have Always Lived in the Castle - 4 stars

  2. I used to update my planner every year. However, now I've gone to a preprinted one. It's great because it accomadtes 8 subjects for five days. And there is room to schedule for 40 weeks instead of the usual 36 weeks. I believe they are priced pretty reasonable. Right now it is:

    6.87 - at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/18-Lesson-Wirebound-Class-Periods/dp/B001AZ71OW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477400805&sr=8-2&keywords=ward+teacher+planner

Rainbow Resouce has is for $4.80 http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/044880

I also use the ward grade book to keep track of their grades for their grades. There are enough pages that I can use it for our entire homeschooling years.

  3. Hi. My dd is going to be working through the modern period this year. The first recommended book on the lists is Tocqueville's "Democracy in America." Any advice on helping her get through this book? I can already see her glassed over eyes. It seems like a tough book to begin the year with. However, I also know it is an important book to read. Suggestions? Comments?

    Thanks,

    Theresa

  4. I'd start with WWS level 1.  There are a lot of basic skills in the book that I'm sure a student of any age could gain from.  I would, however, not make long term plans for the book.  If you want to get through it faster, skip those skills which seem mastered, and spend more time on those that need practice. . You could also get through the book faster if you did writing five days a week instead of four.  If you could get WWS levels 1-3 completed in 2 years, you should be in good shape.  That would leave WWS 4 for 12th grade.  I did level 1 and part of level 2 with a 10th grader, and I think he gained a lot.

  6. Just yesterday I finished my first 2 books of the year, The Fortune of War and W is for Wasted.

W is for Wasted was good, maybe not the greatest book I've ever read, but I've loved Sue Grafton's alphabet mystery series since I started reading it almost 20 years ago. What is remarkable about this series is how consistent it is -- the characters have grown and changed but without some shocking plot twists or character deaths (such as in Elizabeth George's series), and the mysteries are always clever and the detecting always

I really enjoyed this series when I read it years ago. I think I made it through M or N. I'm looking forward to hopping back into this series again.
  7. At the End of 2013 I finished Divergent. I really enjoyed the book and I couldn't wait to continue the series. This week I was able to finish both Insurgent and Allegiant. Insurgent was good but I didn't find myself drawn into it as much as I did Divergent. I was pleasantly surprised by Allegiant. I saw a lot of poor reviews for the book so I wasn't expecting much. However, I thought Allegiant was just as good as Insurgent.

    Insurgent - 3 stars

    Allegiant - 3 stars

  8. What is "your" general rule for getting through books? I started The Lake today and its AWFUL!!! I have lots of reading time today, but I cannot get into this book. I'm at 25%. I was going to slug through it, but then, Oh LOOK, a digital hold is available :P I hate not finishing books, but really, this author is horrible (in my opinion of course)

I hate not finishing books too, but like others have said, there are too many great books to slog through a terrible book.

  9. I am reading Little Women.... I started it last year and didn't make it very far, so starting over! I'm also working through The Skeptical Believer on my Kindle... It's a religion/philosophy non fiction.

Will have to peruse the challenges on the blog.... I'm thinking Dusty Books is a good contender!

I read this for the first time a couple of years ago, and I loved it. I couldn't believe that I had missed such a gem :)

  10. Hi, All.  I want to say thank you to all of those who participate in the book a week threads. Every week I look forward to all of the posts.   I really enjoy reading about the books your love, the books that made you laugh, and the books you wish your hadn't bought. Many of the books on my list this year are from recommendations I received on this board. As we head into the new year, I hope to be a more active participant.  Happy New Year!!!

  11. This week on finish book number 64, Frankenstein. I really enjoyed this book. It was nothing like I expected, but what a great example of classic. The themes of the novel are as highly applicable to today as they were when the book was written. In terms of scientific advancement there is always that question of not can I do it, but should I do it.
