  1. Have to agree that Goodreads has become quite entertaining now that we have so many people using it. So convenient too!

I love checking in on Goodreads! I almost always add more books to my tbr pile. The other great thing about Goodreads and this group is being introduced to so many great books. Some of them I would never had picked up with recommendations for y'all. So thank you to all for sharing here on the WTM boards and Goodreads. It's great having friends that actually post on goodreads. So many of my IRL friends signed up, but they don't ever use it.

  2. Yesterday I finished the audio book, St. Peter's Fair, the 4th Brother Cadfael mystery. I'm thinking I'll listen to Naugty in Nice next, a Her Royal Spyness mystery. However, Faithr's post reminded me that I have Infidel to finish (I own it from Audible). I put it aside when an Overdrive audio book came in, and didn't get back to it. I also have 5 Audible credits and can't decide how to use them. One possibility is to get more of the Brother Cadfael and Her Royal Sypness books, but I might look into one or two from my TR list. I need to use at least one before my March credit becomes available because 5 is the maximum I can roll over.

I read the first three Brother Cadfael mysteries, but I think I'm going to try the fourth one as an audiobook. Does the audio version work well for this book?

If you are looking for votes, I vote for more Royal Spyness Books ;)

    This week I read:

Childhood's End - An interesting take on the arrival of extra terrastrial and what it means for humanity

A Quiet Life in the Country - I only gave this book 2 stars, but I plan to read the next book in the series. I was listening to this one as a audiobook, and I kept getting interrupted and I had to go back over and over.

Deceptive Clarity - This is a first in a new to me, mystery series. I thought that this was a good book, but there were a couple of points at the end of the story that didn't make sense.

Murder in the Mulberry Bend - This is the fifth book in the gaslight mystery series. I really enjoyed this book, as well as the four that came before. This story takes place in the slums of New York during the beginning of the nineteenth century. The series highlights how bad life could be in the slums and often contrasts it to the life of the wealthy. It sounds dark, but I really enjoy this series.

In other news, it looks like Alan Bradley has another Flavia de Luce book coming out this year. Amazon didn't have any record of it, but Goodreads said it is coming out in September. It's called The Grave's a Fine and Private Place. I'm excited for this one to come out.

  3. I have never read Murder on the Orient Express, either. Truth be told, I don't think I have ever read an Agatha Christie. Which is why it is slated for my Mystery Bingo square. I have a number of can't-believe-I-never-read-that books on my bingo card.

I love the Bingo card and this list.  I've already tried a number of books that I never would have read otherwise.  I also have a number of books that I can't believe I haven't read that I would like to read this year.

  4. I forgot to post my reading last week, so I have two weeks worth of books to report on.

First I read "Murder on the Orient Express." It is a great mystery, and I can't believe it took me this long to read it. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries.

Then I read "Mayhem on the Orient Express." If you haven't read "Murder on the Orient Express," I think one could still enjoy this book. You would simply miss out on some of the references. I think I will try at least one more in this series,

"The Man in the Queue" was my first Josephine Tey book. It was good, but based on a lot of other people's reviews it sounds like her other books may be even better.

Last week I read "Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon." It is the fourth book in the Meg Langslow series. I have enjoyed all four books that I've read.

I also read, "No Wind of Blame" by Georgette Heyer. This is one of her mystery titles. I enjoyed the book, but I think I will wait awhile until I read the next in the series. It doesn't seem like her murder mystery books need to be read in a certain order.

I read my fifth book in the Royal Spyness series, "Naughty in Nice." Like all the others, I really love it. I really enjoy the narrator on the audio book. I would definitely read this series in order. The development of the characters builds in each book.

Lastly, I read "Sleeping Giants." I gave this book three stars, but I felt that the writing in the book was missing something.

Based on Robin's review, I ordered "The Bear and the Nightingale" from my library. I'm now first on the waiting list, and I'm excited to try it.

Matryoshka, thanks for the positive review of the book!

  5. I have a word problem that has me stumped. I'm having trouble even understanding the question. I'm sure I'm just missing something easy, but I was hoping someone could help. This problem needs to be solved using only one variable.

Leslie has 20 quarters and dimes. If she had as many dimes as she has quarters and as many quarters as dimes, she would have 30 cents less. How many of each coin does she have.

The answer: 11 quarters and 9 dimes

    Thanks for you help!

  6. Feel better soon!

On a related dental note: Yesterday, when I told DS14 his appointment to get his braces was this morning, he replied "Hide Me!" He sends his sympathies.

I remember when my daughter first got her braces on. This year she finally got them off, and that was a much happier milestone. I hope is appointment goes as well as possible.

  7. I've read all the original Dune novels, and all the prequels written by Frank Herbert's son Brian. I've enjoyed them all, but no, I don't think any of the following books in the Dune series are as good as the first one. It was quite amazingly brilliant.

Based on people responding it sounds like the first is definitely the best. I might eventually read a few more, but I think I'll put them at the bottom of the tbr pile for now.

  8. I actually finished four books this week :driving: and dropped my first book of the year. I made it through three chapters of Crocodile on a Sandbank by Peters on audiobook. I found the combination of the narrator's voice and the first person style of the book annoying. It made the main character annoying, and I decided that I would stop before I totally disliked her. This way I can try again at a future point in

I really loved the Amelia Peabody books. I'm pretty enamored with all things Ancient Egypt though. I think there was one or two books that didn't quite catch my fancy. I never listened to the books on audio though. Just a plug for keeping this series as an option in the future.

  9. We are actually going over to my mom's for a hot dog & chili night while the Super Bowl is on. We will probably watch parts of it (because my dad will have it on for sure), but I suspect dd & ds will end up reading their books rather than watching the game.

My husband went to his brother's house for the day to visit and watch the Super Bowl. He told me he thought I would be bored by myself at home. I told him that I would be the opposite of bored. A quiet house and stack of books = Happy Mamma!

  10. Hi, All! I let last week pass by me without posting. I subscribe to the thread though so I always get to enjoy all your wonderful posts.

Today I finished "Dune." I really enjoyed the characters and the story. I'm looking forward to eventually reading the second book in the series. There is still quite a story to be told. Has anyone read the sequel? Was it as good as Dune? I'm using this book to cover the "One Word Title" on the BINGO board.

The week before last, I finished "Miss Julia Takes Over." I was introduced to Miss Julia by someone on this board, and I'm glad. I just love her! I also finished, "Royal Blood." This is the 4th book in the Royal Spyness series. I adore listening to these books. The reader does such a great job. The last book I finished was "The Peril at End House." I have been chomping at the bit to read "Murder on the Orient Express." However, I have this problem with having to read books in order. So I've been working my way through the Hercule Poirot books. I finished the 8th book in the series, "The Peril at End House." Even though I guessed the murderer early on, I still enjoyed this mystery. This week, I will finally be reading, "Murder on the Orient Express."

  11. Coming in a little late this week...

Last week I read "By Gaslight". If Goodreads had half stars I would have given it 3 1/2 stars. I loved the story but I had to constantly reread sections because I didn't know who was talking or because of awkward sentences. If I were to judge on only the story, I would give it four stars.

Thanks to Stacia for the recommendation!

I also finished two books by C. C. Benison. The first was "Twelves Drummers Drumming" and the second, "Eleven Pipers Piping." Both were nice little mysteries. The mysteries do not take place at Christmas. Instead, the main character is Father Tom Christmas. Both were three stars.

I saw the posts earlier this week about Burns Supper. I had never heard of the celebration until I read "Eleven Pipers Piping." And then lo and behold The Burns Supper celebration happened this week. It was interesting to read about.

  12. Hi Everyone! I've really enjoyed reading through all the posts this week. I always find another book to put in my tbr pile.

Last week I read "The Women in the Castle" by Jessica Shattuck. This was an ARC copy given to me by Harper Collins Publishing. The book is scheduled to be released in April. I really, really wanted to love this book. I loved the premise - It is a story about three German women and their children and their quest to rebuild their lives after World War II. The story bounces between before the war, during the war, and after the war. I waited for the book to spring to life, but it never quite got there. Having said that, I did like the book, and I gave it three stars.

The second book I finished was "I am the Messenger." I didn't really care for the writing style of this book, and I found I wasn't as emotionally tied to the characters as I was for "The Book Thief." The book is about a young cab driver who is "chosen" to be a messenger. The messages he caries vary with each person he is sent to. I also gave this book three stars.

    Happy Reading!

  13. Hello Everyone!

Made it through week 1, phew 😅.

Last week I read "Bethlehem Road", the tenth book in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. I love cozy mysteries but it is nice to have a little meatier story. This book is probably one of my least favorites in the series though. The books in this series end immediately after you find out who did it. This book, has a little twist at the end. Three stars

I also finished "The Help" last night. i listened to this book as an audiobook, and I'm glad I picked that format. I though the audio version was very well done, and helped to bring the story to life. I debated between 4 or 5 stars for this book. I chose 4, but I think 4 1/2 is closer. Goodreads doesn't offer me that choice though 😀

I have "By Gaslight" on hold at my library thanks to Stacia's recommendation. I'm number one on the list so I'm hoping it will come this week.

Looking forward to reading everyone's posts this week!

  14. HI, All

I feel embarrassed to even ask for help, but I can't seem to come up with the answers that matches the book's answer.

Sally owned 500 shares of Acme Tube. On Monday each share of the stock gained p pounds. On Tuesday each share lost one more than twice as many points as it had gained the day before. By how much had the total value of Sally's shares of Acme Tube changed from the opening trading on Monday morning and the closing of Tuesday afternoon?

I would love to a see a step by step solution for this problem if anyone has time. I''m sure I'll hit myself over the head when I see it,but I would still appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Theresa
