  1. Hi,

I am interested in creating an Interior Design course for my son, who is very interested in houses, interior design (of course!) building, art, etc.  The one course I saw at Landry is not a great fit as far as time so I want to create our own stuff.

Anyone have any idea of where to start??  Any good books, resources?  I am also looking for a good resource for some type of art course, but something that moves pretty quickly.  We don't want to spend a semester on line, curves, and such as we have covered that informally already.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

    Thanks

  2. Thanks so much for the information. We can't afford online classes other than foreign language and my son n really doesn't even want to do that online. Our schools are using some horrible curriculum so we can't do that either. I really would like a program that has teaching videos so I guess that takes out Jurgensen

I am left with Jacobs, Saxon, and AOPS and maybe Chalkdust if I could.find t used.

  3. I just noticed that the Homeschool Coop has Thinkwell courses on sale for the next four days.  The courses look pretty rigorous-I originally went to the site to look at the Biology but it looks a bit more than what my 9th graders need.  I may just get it to use for specific topics.  BUT what I really want to know if anyone has used this site for Geometry.  From the sample video, it looks pretty tame and the course outline looks good.  But I would never do something like this without some pretty good reviews from others who have gone this route......anyone???

    Thanks

  4. Hi,

I am looking at a geometry program for my freshman for the fall.  We will finished Jacobs algebra by the end of May.  The program I am looking at is not as rigorous as Jacobs, but I thought I would then be able to add in some test prep and such and not overwhelm my student.  However, I don't want to skimp or create a deficit for my kid-I am hoping he will test good for the PSAT.  The geometry program I am looking at has 11 lessons that are all proof based, and then after that, review proofs that total 25.  So overall, he will have the opportunity to complete at least 69 proofs, some of the on the challenging level.

Does that seem adequate or enough to qualify for a good geometry program?  I am really having a hard time finding a good program that won't break our budget and this one is reasonable in price.  But again, I don't want to short change my kid.  If there was a huge difference in programs and I knew it would make a big difference to buy one of the really expensive programs, I would make that work.

I would really love some input!!!

    Thanks so much,,

  5. Still trying to decide about Geometry for 9th graders. One is an average learner and the other is quick/bright. BUT. I also need support in case I get stuck teaching harder concepts so I'm looking for DVD or online videos that go with the book or at least line up with the sequence.

I have been thinking about Chalkdust, but videos are long AND it is SO expensive!! Any other thoughts?

I found videos for Jorgenson(?) But i dont know much about it. Is it a hard book?

Please send some help my way...I have hip replacement soon and I need to get this figured out.

    Thanks

  6. We have a group that is hoping to buy a bunch of generic credits from Landry on Friday.  These are at the ridiculous price of $49.00/semester, normally $390.00.  You do not need to know which class you will register for as these are "generic"-you can use them for any class for the school year of 2017-18 and after.  They never expire!!!  This is the last time Landry will offer this type of group buy, so if you have children coming up that may use Landry in the future, this is the perfect time to buy.

I will be paying for the credits, collecting money, and then Landry will re-distribute the credits to you.  This does take awhile for Landry to go through the process of distributing the credits to each individual group participant, but YOU WiLL GET THE CREDITS.  I did this last year and there was no problem.

If you are interested, please PM TODAY.  I will have to close this by tonight, 7:00 so I can organize names and buy tomorrow.  We are very close to our minimum-we need a few more people to participate!  If you have questions, please PM and I will answer to the best of my ability.

For what it is worth- I do not get anything from organizing this!!  I get the same thing you do-some good, cheap online classes for my kids.  I am willing to go through the hassle of organizing this since I have been happy with Landry thus far.

    Thanks

  7. Those who have joined the group buy-we are at about 50 credits and need to get to 80.  Tell your friends or post the message elsewhere-we are almost there and need to have it completed by tonight so I can get the records in order to buy in the morning.  These credits will go fast!!!  These are the names and amounts that I have so far.  I am listing screen names only.  If you can buy more, let me know!!!

    overpeople  - 8-10

    chigurre-  10  (maybe 15)

    Oklahoma girl- 10

    trafal- 10

    emzhengjju- 4

    stc- 4  (possible 10)

  8. I am going to try to do a group buy for Landry Academy, which starts on Friday and is open only to current families.  However, if you participate in my group buy, then you can get in on the great deal-$49.00 for a semester class.  I will purchase the bundle of credits, and then you will pay me.  I give Landry your name and other info. and they will transfer credits to you according to how many you buy from me….basically I do all the work.  The regular price for a semester class is 390.00 I believe, so this is an incredible deal-I don't get any reward or extra money or credits or anything for doing this; but if enough people want to buy with me then I get an incredible deal on the generic courses at Landry, which is why I am doing this.

This has to be done by Thursday night and we need 80 all together.  We may not reach 80; if we don’t it won’t happen.

This is the LAST time Landry will offer these advanced deals.  The one thing to be aware of is these are for the school year of 2017-2018 school-NOT next fall;  These credits never expire so you can use them when ever you want after 2017.

If you are interested, please EMAIL me at the email below.  Tell me how many credits you want-remember we need to get to 80!

  9. Hi,

I am looking for specific recommendation for a chemistry course for my daughter.  She is "currently" interested in a Vet Technician career, although that may change.  She also likes the health field.  However, she has some challenges as a elementary student is is just now doing Geometry, after finishing Algebra 1 at the end of September.  She is technically a Junior.

We started the year with Apologia Chemistry, 3rd Edition and she got caught up and very frustrated with the FIRST chapter!!!  The significant figures threw her for a loop and she just got too frustrated to want to go on.  So we have been using Conceptual Chemistry, the newest edition with the online self study option.  She is doing Ok. I think, chapter 2 test coming up. BUT in the back of my mind, I keep thinking this is not "REAL" chemistry and wonder if the community college will accept it.  I guess I could call but again, she may not even do Vet Tech and may wind up at a 4 year college!!

Any advice???  Is Conceptual Chemistry accept as REAL chemistry??  Would I be better going back to Apologia or finding something else?  Maybe wait until her Senior year for chemistry-yet that would really affect her self esteem, I think.

    Thanks for any advice!!

  10. I am looking for some suggestions for my 13 year old computer geek (said in a loving manner!)  He loves computers, but loves to build them!  He is doing some coding work on his own, but this is not his passion-he wants to build computers.  He has already built a computer for himself, but we cant afford to have him build anymore for our family-it is expensive to buy the parts.  But I don't know where else to turn-where turn to get him hooked in somewhere so he can satisfy this passion.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to look in our community??  I just don't even know where to begin to look!

    Thanks for any thoughts!

  12. world war 2 era:

    Animal Farm-Russian Revolution

Parallel Journeys, Eleanor Ayer-  This is about a women and a young man (teenager), the woman goes eventually goes to a concentration camp and the boy becomes a solider in the Germany army.  It give tons of history about the war as well.

The Book Thief ,  Markus Zusak-( i have only gotten 1/2 way through the book but it is good so far) The narrator in this book is Death, and he (or she??) tells the story of a young child whose mother gives her up to a German family during the war-she can't take care of her any longer.  The girl forms a close attachment to the kind husband and the wife is a mean woman.  Many events in the story are centered around the war.
