  1. We are another Keen family here. After DS destroying shoes, we finally broke down and started buying Keen sandals. He wears them all year. We just put on SmartWool socks for the wintertime. He has a brown pair and a blue pair and they go with all his outfits (save for fancy occasions). If you shop at the off time of year, the Keen sandals can sometimes be found for around $30 versus the usual $60. We always keep the next 2 sizes up in his closet.

DH only wears Keens and swears by them. He is a teacher and they are the only shoes that don't make his feet hurt by the end of the day.

  2. DS has been doing two languages simultaneously for the past year - both on Rosetta Stone. First, he started with Mandarin, then added Spanish. He is done with Mandarin and is now doing Spanish and French. We do Latin from other sources. He has not had a problem keeping things differentiated. In fact, he loves seeing all the commonalities between the languages.

  3. Oh, I feel your pain RIGHT NOW! DS has lost the remote for the DVD player and we have looked everywhere. DH tried to reprogram the remote for the satellite so it would work the DVD player and now NOTHING will work. Steam is coming out of DH's ears. Two trips to Wally World for "Easy to Program" remotes has just caused more blue words and stomping of feet. To top if all off, DH had to have oral surgery today and wasn't in the best of moods to start with. I have sequestered myself in the other room and DS has gone to bed. Not a good way to end the day.

  4.

How was your weekend? What did you do? Saturday was Lowe's Build and Grow Workshop - part 2 of a 3 part train. Saturday afternoon and evening was dinner with DS's best friends parents. Amazing that the kids get along and the husbands also get along. Makes for a wonderful night relaxing, having adult beverages and just chillin' with some great company. Sunday - UGH- helped DH finish grading all his final projects from the university. Pure drudgery, but we got it done :001_smile:

What's on your agenda for today? Schooling hard today then TKD practice.

What's on the menu today? Clean out the leftovers day!

What's the weather like where you live? Overcast, grey, dreary, 45, chance of rain.

Do you do any special baking for the holidays? If so, what's your favorite thing to make? (And along those lines, could you share the recipe?) If you do baking for the holidays....do you bake ahead and freeze it or just bake it as you need it? I make an old family recipe pound cake. Usually do a big day of baking and then hand the pound cakes out during the week.

Hope everyone has a great week!

  5. I got mine this morning. DS actually ran and met the UPS man at the top of driveway because he knows with my new Fire he gets my old Kindle

Haven't had much time to play with it, but I like what I see. DH ordered mine as a surprise gift :001_wub: so I am going to love it for no other reason than that one. The color is cool and I love that I can see the cover of the book versus just a list of book titles.

I am a voracious reader so if I use it for nothing more than that, I will be happy. :001_smile:

  6. That happened at my aunt's house when I was a kid.

My young cousin went into the den & told her mom (my aunt), my mom, and grandmother that she had seen something on the kitchen floor. "It might be a toy. Or a string. Or maybe a snake."

Turns out it was a baby copperhead.

BTDT at our house a few weeks ago. DH had come in from taking the garbage to the curb (it was close to midnight) and upon coming in, looked across the kitchen floor and thought, "Gosh, that dead banana peel wasn't there when I took out the garbage." Dead banana peel turned out to be a baby copperhead. DH almost :svengo:! He is deathly afraid of snakes. That little bugger decided to go hide behind some cabinets that were against the wall. After almost an hour, we finally got him out. I was just glad that DS was asleep or we would have been hearing him saying, "SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!"

  7. We have buried several of our chihuahuas over the years. We always wrap them in a blanket and then put them in a shoebox. Dig the hole deep (as pps have said.) We also put in a layer of charcoal in the bottom of the hole and them over the top of the box before putting the dirt back in the hole. Our vet told us to do this as the charcoal absorbs the decomposing odor and thus, keeps away other animals.

    :grouphug: to your family.

  8. I got a Keurig for Christmas last year. I only drink a cup of coffee a day (and sometimes none). The instant hot water is wonderful for hot cocoa, hot tea, instant noodles/soups/etc. Just this week DS came down with a horrible cold and I made him drink tea with honey all day for three days. It was so nice that the tea was always fresh and hot.

The K-Cup came with mine, but I didn't like it (spewed coffee everywhere). I use the EkoBrew Cup (http://www.amazon.com/ekobrew-Refillable-K-Cup-Keurig-Brewers/dp/B0051SU0OW) and it is wonderful.

I do have a collection of K-Cups that I get at JPenney or Kohls. They tend to send me a free $10 coupon about every six weeks and I apply that toward my K-Cups - thus getting about 18 cups for $3.00 (like 16 cents a cup).

When our Keurig goes, we will buy another to replace it.
