Here's an idea, though this wasn't on your list...

 

What about using Notgrass World History? You could add in a few Progeny Press study guides to go a little more in depth with some of the literature selections used in Notgrass.

 

Some people actually split the two volumes of Notgrass WH over 2 years. They add in more lit selections when doing it that way. So it would be like, Notgrass WH Vol. I for grade 9, and then Notgrass WH Vol II in grade 10, which might be more appealing to you.

 

You could search the threads for splitting up Notgrass WH to get some ideas.

Tina, your blog made me cry it was so sweet. I read your intro and it was just bursting with Christian love. You have an amazing blog and family. As you requested, I am praying for your 8th grader to get the drum set, and for your 9th grader to sustain a good attitude. Also that you become more confident when teaching those deeper lit subjects (I can sooo identify, please pray for me, too) ... :-) Also, I would like to know more about the time management course you mentioned...

I wanted to know so I didn't give advice about what to do over the summer to prepare and then you tell me you are beginning in June. :laugh:

What I have done is gradually trained my dialectic and rhetoric students to plan their own schedules. Here is my basic schedule, including time.

 

First paragraph: You made me laugh. LOL :D

 

Second paragraph: I happened to stumble upon that vid and the free code during checkout. I haven't downloaded it yet. But I hope to get to watch it soon. :-)

[Astronomy for a full year credit in high school?]

I want ds (soon to be 11th grade) to do a full year of Astronomy studies before he graduates (maybe this year). I'm glad I found this thread. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. :-)

 

Just wanted to add regarding how to gain a full credit, it depends on the amount of time you spend studying a subject. Check your state's requirements -- it can vary a little by state -- and keep up with your time as you go along.

When will you begin using this?

 

Not sure why you'd want to know that, but...

 

I'd like to begin TOG ASAP (meaning 'hopefully' sooner rather than later). :-)

 

I do have some time figured in for the learning curve. But, ideally I would like to begin TOG in early June. We mostly do year 'round schooling, with a more relaxed schedule in the summer, usually. So that means I have a little wiggle room if it needs to be tweaked here and there while we're adjusting.

Is it Harvey's Revised English Grammar that you're using? I've seen that but haven't really researched it.

Some of the other suggestions may have given you your answer? But if you still haven't decided, I want to make a suggestion re: Applications of Grammar -- that you look over the scope and sequence of the different levels of that program before making a decision. I read Cathy Duffy's reviews on AoG and she mentioned that the higher levels are quite difficult (I'm thinking maybe it wouldn't equate to a good source for review).

Also, I do believe Harvey's Grammar might be helpful for you. I've never used it, per se, but I've heard little blurbs here and there about it. It is available free on books.google.com (search: Harvey's Grammar; look for the one that is a full preview).

[TOG users, how have you simplified?]

Hello!

 

I am new here, and very new to TOG. I purchased DE Y2, U1 over the weekend, along with MA and WA. I will be using this for 11th grade ds. I'm not sure yet, but I think he will be in R level for the most part.

 

Before I purchased the program, I put the search feature to work on this site trying to figure out which publisher I wanted to choose (I had a list of several in mind). I read so many threads, and noticed some complaints surfacing for TOG (mostly from non-TOG users) on how time consuming it was to plan, etc. I'm not new to unit studies, nor the commitment it takes to plan, gather books and materials, etc. So even though there were complaints on the planning and scheduling, for me personally I dismissed them and decided to dive in, giving TOG a go. (I'm still nervous regarding my purchase. Please tell me I won't regret buying TOG! lol)

 

I said all that to say, the program does appear a little daunting. So here I am at this point, needing suggestions on how to simplify the process, and streamline the beginning and weekly planning. Please tell me, if you use TOG in a simplified way - and your planning takes you minutes a week instead of hours - how did you accomplish that goal?

I'm pretty sure the lists at Bookshelf Central are just recommended books, and not alternates. But to be sure, you can also pull up a booklist at the TOG website. (this is the method I prefer, because it's more easily printable) Go to www.tapestryofgrace.com, and click on "Store". Create a (free) account, and then you can click on "Resource List" where you can create booklists for each year plan, tailoring it to levels, subjects, and units.

I'm looking into several programs for high school, one of which is TOG (I hope this is the correct forum board to post these questions).

 

My questions are as follows:

 

1.Does it matter which year of Tapestry one begins with: 1, 2, 3, or 4?

 

2. Where does one view the book lists for each year and level, prior to ordering?

I'm new to Sonlight and have a question about buying used materials...

 

The ad says:

 

Sonlight History of God's Kingdom Core 200 Instructor's Guide and Notes, Bible Study Guide Answer Key, History and Biographies Study Guide and Answer Key, Literature Guide and Answer Key

 

Is there something missing from this, like a student book or other pages???

[Marking in books]

We don't typically mark in our books. Although, I do occasionally with TG's that I'm not planning on reselling.

 

When we make notations, we use pads of paper or journals, writing down the name of the book, page number, and quote or paragraph numbers.
