  1. On Wednesday, some local players talked to the city and reserved part of one of the local parks for Saturday night. (lots of Pokestops and gyms there) By Saturday, they had Radio Shack on board to set up a table with charging stations (and discounts on portable chargers).  A local pizza place donated 20 large pizzas (and another 10 to the team that won the gym contest). Another local store gave them a great deal on a sound sytem rental. They had free water for everyone and beaded necklaces (blue, red and gold of course) for all. It was great fun. It didn't hurt that the weather was amazing. They had lures going on all of the stops from 5:30-9:00. They're hoping to do this several more times this summer. Everyone had a great time. My legs hurt today, but I took a bike ride and that helped. (had to try out my cell phone bike mount...it was great) ;)

  2. Pokemon has been the best thing ever for dd. She's been playing for about 1.5 years. She goes to the local game shop 1-2 times a week to play. She's made friends there, and usually spends Sundays with them.
To play, he'll need a deck. When first getting started, it's best to just go with a premade deck. If you look on amazon, look for "theme deck". The most recent release is "Break Through".

If you go to http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/play-online/ and click "download and start playing", he can play against the computer or others, and learn the game. This helped dd a lot at the beginning.

  3. I'm not technically a Minnesotan yet either (have to get my new license, lol). I called about what I have to do to go native, and was told about an obstacle course, a triathlon, and a dog sled race I have to complete in the dead of winter.

Also, I have to swear I have never have pledged allegiance to the Canadian flag, as this has dire consequences every 4 years.

Does this sound right to the Minnesotans here??

You're not officially Minnesotan until you've made it through a winter. A real winter. Snow, blizzards, double-digit below zero temps. Have fun.  :D

  4. We have taken Amtrak from WI to WA and/or OR several times. Sometimes we ride in coach, sometimes we have a room. After having trouble in coach with my backpack being to big to easily put it on the shelf above my seat, I discovered the Embark Jartop backpack at Target. All 3 of us have them now. They fit up top and because of how they open, they're easy to set on the floor and find things.
We also pack a feather pillow in a jersey pillowcase (because it's stretch) and then put a fleece blanket inside that. Because they were on sale, we ended up with king-size pillowcases. This worked out great, as we couldjust gather the end and hold it easily.
Bring headphones. Especially if you're in coach, watch the volume of them so as to not disturb others.
Hoodies. The train temp can change drastically. They're also good for blocking the lights when sleeping.

  5. Amazon has a lot of choices. If he's using it more for transportation, not just fun, look for one with bigger wheels. Knowing he's a teen (but not knowing his size), be sure to check weight limits. Most of the regular Razor scooters list 143lb. as the limit. Their pro series go to 220.

    This one maybe?

These look cool, but I don't know anything about them. We've only had Razor scooters:

  6. Each day when I ask him to practice, he rants and raves and tells me how much he hates guitar and how it hurts his fingers etc.

    (former guitar store owner/teacher here)

If he's been taking lessons for 1.5 years and it's still hurting his fingers, I'm wondering if the guitar has been set up properly. It does hurt when you start, because your fingers are tender. If he's practicing every day, it shouldn't be that bad at this point. Not knowing what guitar he's playing, I can only go on past experience with younger students. They often had inexpensive starter gutiars, or an old one that had been in the family. If the strings are up too high, you have to push down too hard to play, and it hurts. Another thing that could help is moving to a lighter gauge string.
