  1. Wow, thank you all for all of these ideas and tips. Am I doing this reply thing the right way? (Push the + button to "quote one post"?) Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this. Also-- why does my profile say "Hive Mind Larvae"?? 😆 I definitely appreciate all of your support and help as I am starting to feel a bit nervous. Just about wanting to give my girls what is best for them, as well as for talking to the school about it. I will be sad to say goodbye to some of the administration. I'm hoping we can still help out by bringing them milk caps for $, service, etc when we can and just maintain a good relationship with them overall.. I'm nervous for the principal's and my DDs teachers reactions since I do like the principal and can appreciate that as a school system, they are just wanting to do their best to educate the way they know how and are able in a classroom setting. I just want so much more for my DDs and for our family right now, homeschool just feels like the best fit. Merci beaucoup to all!
  2. Thank you!!! Wow, thank you for all the helpful links and lists for ideas!!! That was super kind of you to take the time. Love the idea for some informal educational supplements while working with the other! I'm glad to know your littles took the homeschooling idea well! Hopefully my girls will as well. I think we'll do similar in explaining that we want a different school structure for them. We're just going to present it really positively. I think helping them to think about all the pro's will work once they get used to the idea. I really hope we're close to a "clicking point", but it is good to remember to be patient in my expectations of what homeschooling will look like. Thank you so much Lori.
  3. Thank you so much! I really appreciate the help! I'll look @Farrar up! I really like the point about making it clear we are not in a race. That will be something I need to work on with my one twinny for sure! And I am really excited to go year round. Hopefully it works well for us that way. If not, we'll figure it out. Thank you!
  4. I think I'm doing this response thing in forums totally wrong! Trying to figure it out. But oh my goodness, thank you for all of this helpful information!!! I definitely laughed a bunch through some of your comments! My girls are really small for their age, but this picture is also two years old I think...maybe just a year...somewhere in there. Yep, I'm 5 ft tall and we make 'em small. My 3 yr old still hasn't made the charts yet in her well child visits. The twins just turned 8. Like, last week. I'm very glad to hear about the LC (?) forum, I will definitely reach out there! Woa, I have a lot of forum acronyms to catch up on- haha! But I did get quite a few of them 🙂 Also, I DO have quite a lot in this post, don't I?! Thank you for all the helpful links!!! And the advice about taking things slow and working with them as individuals is spot on. As far as the laws here go, I am required to track hours and subjects studied just in case the school district that we give notice of homeschooling to asks for the records. So I have no idea how serious they will be on that. But I like your thinking on what counts as school 😉 As far as my DD's school testing, we met with the school on Wednesday, and they told us that they cannot find anything in the form of a learning disability. However they found (only with the teachers comments and my own, not through any testing), that she has a lot of anxiety, low confidence, is the biggest perfectionist they've seen, and compares herself in everything to her twin. I am torn, because I do feel like if this is it, I can work with it for sure and help her! But I also wonder if some of this is biased. Of course I see all of what they say. But at home, I also notice that she cannot hold her focus, although in other ways she doesn't come across as having adhd. (And apparently she can hold her focus at school). She has major issues with ANYthing uncomfortable as far as clothing, noises, body sensations, etc.) But does not come across as having any autism either. They did however, say we can go to a doctor and get a diagnosis of some kind if he sees anything, and get her on a 504. They also did say they will continue to carry records over each year for her and make sure she gets as much time as she needs with every test. (The 504 we would need eventually for certain test times.) Either way, I am grateful for your remarks about maybe getting more unbiased thorough testing, even if just to rule any learning issues out and prevent years of frustration. Another question- should I get her a 504 if we are homeschooling? I guess I still have a lot to look into on this subject. I will pop over to that forum you are talking about. There are so many things I wasn't even aware of, such as a "teachers card" for the library. Love the idea for paper rolls. I really appreciate all of this advice and information. Thank you!
  5. Ha! We are very familiar with the sulk when the other is ahead. I will definitely plan to have them do as many workbooks as possible separately. Thanks!
  6. Hello from Denver, I am new to forums, as well as homeschooling. I guess my biggest question is where do I start?? My twins are in 3rd grade right now in a charter school. Although they made the age cut off by days, I'm looking to start them with 2nd grade curriculum when we begin homeschooling. I am planning to begin in a couple of weeks after I give the school the 14 day notice required by Colorado state law. I am trying to gather materials and organize in the meantime. Thus far I have only read Susan and Jessie's 4th edition of the WTM. I want to pick up some of their other books for parents. I've decided we will try going year round, with breaks for any holidays, family trips, and any other time we just need a break. I will be ordering a lot of WTM materials, and have already purchased their math curriculum and a lot of math manipulatives. They will be doing French with a (Native) tutor on Fridays, as well as speaking it daily with their father (not Native, but fluent). Does anyone have any advice for homeschooling twins, with extra younger littles around? My twins learn very different. One is better with language fluency and picks up math easier. The other struggles with being really really slow at tasks, with anxiety, with math and reading fluency, and generally does not love school right now- aside from art. We are in the process of getting her tested at her school. They don't seem to be finding any problems however (no dyslexia, no adhd, no processing problems as of yet) so she may just be a perfectionist with some pieces missing in her math and reading. I'm hoping to go back and take time on these with her, even beginning with kindergarten and first grade math, and whizzing through them with her to build her confidence and help it be more fun for her. Other questions: Is there anything else I am missing that I need to do legally before we begin? They are immunized, and I plan to track our hours and subjects. What things do you all do to save money? I can't seem to find any helps with funding for school materials in the state of Colorado. What tips are there for homeschooling families? What do you tell your children to help them like the idea of homeschooling? We haven't told them yet. I think they will be both excited, and not happy about leaving their friends and the whole school scene altogether. What might I not be considering that you think I might need to be aware of as we begin? If there is a different forum that is more geared towards my questions, please direct me. Thank you for any help! Alisa
