I have been homeschooling with health issues. In fact, I'm having another surgery on Aug. 11, so the start of our new school year will be somewhat delayed. My advice? Make a general overall plan of where and how you want your school year to go and keep that as your goal. Then, work out the details of that plan as you go along. Do more when you have more energy, take it easy when you have less energy.
Hang in there. We are not superwomen. We cannot do it all, all the time. Take care of yourself, too. Hugs.

I don't keep track of hours, either. If you divide 900 by 52, that's a little over 17 hours a week of school time. I know they are getting more than that, so I don't worry about it.

I also have used the little circle stickers with good success. They're fairly cheap and simple, which is one less thing to worry about when trying to get a garage sale put together.

Cute.

Corn, soybeans, dairy cows are the biggest things here in NE Ohio.

Interesting. My kids my like this. Thanks for sharing.

I am also reporting to a different person/office this year. This year I am sending my paperwork to the official who told me last year that homeschooling is putting my kids at a severe disadvantage because they won't know how to "navigate the hallways in between classes" when they get to college. I am hoping that this process ends up being drama-free like the last 6 years.
HOLY COW!

I just don't read when people share his posts. I read a few and that was enough for me. Forever. I don't give him a second thought these days.

How did your daughter enroll, Sarah?

I haven't read all the replies, but when I think of "drug store workbooks", I think of those things you can get at the Dollar Spot at Target. Other workbooks, like Kumon and Spectrum are not the same, in my opinion. They have been researched and designed with purpose, and are not necessarily just busywork. You can include them in your course work, or as Ellie so eloquently explained, your curriculum.

PM me if you're moving to the Cleveland area. I can give you links to tons of activities for homeschoolers.

My kids have gone to public school in Ohio and I've homeschooled in Ohio for 3.5 years. It's fairly easy. The public schools aren't doing all of the above requirements every year, either, so I don't worry too much about it. If you decide to move here and have specific questions, I'd be happy to help.

Interesting. I was thinking of ordering some, but maybe I'll reconsider.

Following for ideas. We're using Real Science Odyssey Bio 2 now and I love it. Just don't know where to go from here.

My kids were 8 and 6.5 when I started them as read alouds. I thought I would wait for books 4-7 until they were older, but they were so excited about them that they wanted to keep going. We read a book, then watched that movie, then read the next book, then watched the next movie, and so on. By the time of my younger sons 7th birthday, we were on book 5 and he wanted a Harry Potter birthday party. That was the best birthday party we've ever had. They are 10 and 11 now, and we have a regular Harrathon, during which we watch all the movies and make HP snacks, and do HP activities, like having wizard duels, and sticking our faces in the Pensieve. We are total HP geeks here.

Our library system also has free meeting rooms available.

I like the Tall Tales idea, too.
Classical education western/euro-centric?
in General Education Discussion Board

I get a little perturbed at the co-opting of classical education by religious groups. A modern classical education to me is an attempt to mimic the liberal arts that were taught in Greece and Rome. The purpose of education was to create functioning adult (albeit only male) citizens who could participate in the running of the country. This is my goal as a classical educator. I want my children to have a broad knowledge of history, science, literature, and art. I want them to be able to participate in society and government processes. We focus on Western civilization because we have inherited that culture. If my family background was from somewhere else, of course, our focus would be otherwise.
