  1. Can anyone help me with this?

I entered the username on the advanced search page and selected "all posts".

For search options I selected "a year ago" and paired it with "and older".

    I searched "all forums".

But the furthest back I could go was 2011. Is there any way of getting back to her posts from 2008 (when this person joined the forum) and reading on from there?

  2. That's precisely my concern with HOD, but I do love that everything seems to be woven together very nicely. I am not sure of placement, but DD is quite advanced and a very strong reader. She is also extremely independent. I saw the notebook pages in CTC, and she would LOVE those!!! I really wish that Preparing had something like that!

How do you like the HOD IG/Manuals? I was looking at the Week 1 sample online, and it keeps referring to the Appendix. What kind of information is found in the Appendix? Are all of the discussion questions answered somewhere? My huge concern (for us) is that a lot of HOD will go unused, which defeats the point IMO. Also, does Preparing/CTC work on spelling anywhere? I did not see any material that would specifically work on spelling. Thank you!!

PS - Where can I locate the HOD Yahoo group? Does it have open membership?

The notebooking pages for CTC are beautiful! But Preparing has the kids making a timeline and that was fantastic for my dd.

The appendix has the varying levels of the dictation passages and hints on how to do narrations. Maybe the reading schedule for the extension books too? (we didn't use those so I didn't pay that much attention).

HOD uses the Charlotte Mason method of teaching spelling through studied dictation. The manual explains how to do it. It is not a ruled based method - obviously you would need to use a different spelling curriculum if that didn't suit your goals.

I do like the manuals. They are very easy to use. I admire Carrie's ability to put so much information so neatly on a two page spread :) Now that we are in CTC I would personally like more teacher helps (like the answer to the science questions) but that could just be me.

The boxes do have a "key idea" that addresses the main point of the reading but the discussion questions are not answered in the manual. HOD is based on Charlotte Mason and it is expected the teacher has pre-read the books.

The HOD yahoo group is here. They are very practical in their advice. You will need to apply to join but that is easy (and free).

Just a thought.... if your dd is advanced and you want to do Preparing you might want to consider ordering the extension reading too.

  3. My older dd has done Preparing and almost finished CTC but we are only doing the history from the CTC manual.

It's fine to add things to HOD but it may make for a long day if you don't drop things from the manual.

We really liked the Preparing science although some others find it too light. We liked the books and just the simplicity of it. My dd liked doing small amounts of science each day. The HOD yahoo group have the science questions typed up so you can download and print them; they were great.

We dropped the science from CTC after a few months in so I can't really comment on that.

From memory, in Preparing, HOD skips the earlier parts of Child's History of the World but I can't remember any other books being left incomplete.

I would think that CTC would be too advanced for most 4th graders so maybe that is something you might want to look into more closely - visit the website to check out their placement chart and look at the scheduled books in your library and amazon to see what you think. My dd has found the CTC history books challenging to read and comprehend. HTH

  4. I think it's a bit silly. When I go to the pool alone with dds, I do not swim because I can watch them better poolside. If I'm in the pool, I must stick close and they want to play with friends, swim, and have fun. It becomes even harder when they go in two different directions. Staying poolside means I can keep a good eye on both and intervene if needed. It's only happened once and it was actually for one of their friends whose mother was in the pool but didn't see.

:iagree: What can you do if your dc go in different directions? You are better off out of the pool if you have more than one child in the water.

  5. They should refund you immediately. I have emailed plenty of companies about problems. I don't see why you'd need to call -- they already admitted they made a mistake. If you don't get a refund promptly, give them another warning via email and then contact your credit card or however you paid for the order. Unless they are planning to send it to you when it comes back in stock?

They are planning on sending it to me when it comes back into stock. If they had told me it was out of stock when everything else shipped (or even a week or two later) I would have tried to source it elsewhere but it is not worth pursuing that option now. I just wish I hadn't wasted so much time trying to trace it locally :(

I agree that issues like this should be able to be settled with emails.

Anyway, I know this a small problem when compared to all the other problems people come across in their lives but thankyou for commiserating with me.

  6. That's frustrating!

I will say I don't think they would have charged you knowing it was on back order. In fact, legally in the US they have to tell you it's back ordered and give you an option to cancel at that point as well as give you a revised shipping expectation if you decide to proceed with the order.

I'd say this was a true mix up and they just plain didn't catch it.

I didn't know about the legal side of things and I haven't been offered the option of a refund (but I haven't asked either).

Thankyou. I really appreciate your sympathy. Shipping is expensive and time consuming out here :001_smile:

  7. I'm looking at one of my receipts from a few years ago and it was clearly marked *Items listed below are presently out of stock* and the approximate ship dates given. The item was not charged until sent.

Their customer service is great. I'd give them a call and talk to someone personally about the matter.

Thankyou for taking the time to go and check your old receipt.

Yes, I would have expected that too when I opened the box and saw the invoice

but the missing item was listed in the exactly the same way as everything else .... that is why I thought it had gotten lost in transit.

I have had niggling problems with Christian Book before but this is quite frustrating.

I had emailed them twice before originally posting but they didn't answer my question as to why this happened or why I was charged.

  8. I bought some items from Christian Book, got an email that they had shipped the items and they were delivered yesterday.... except one item (an expensive item) was missing ..... even though I had been charged for it and I had received an email saying it had been shipped!

When I emailed them they said there was a mixup and that the item hadn't even been in stock when I bought it.

    Now I am wondering...

    1. Why I was charged for this item if it wasn't in stock?

    2. Most importantly, why did I receive a shipping notiice saying the item had been packed and shipped when it wasn't even in stock?

    3. Why no-one emailed me to say it wasn't going to be in my delivery so I could see it listed on the invoice in the box and waste my time worrying about it and ringing neighbours, tracing the delivery route to see if it had got lost on the way :(

Sorry, for the rant. I normally try to think the best of companies but there seems to be too many "mix-ups" here.....

Edited to add: the item is on back order until the end of the month

  9. I agree with Woolybear about looking at those schedules which will schedule the highlights of the earlier years rather than trying to do absolutely everything.

Although AO is transitioning from the yahoo group format to a forum format, the yahoo group link (above) should work and you should be able to join easily.

Look for the pre year 3 schedule

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AO_HEO_Schedules/files/Ambleside%20Online%20Schedules/Pre-Year%203/

and the pre year 5 schedule

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AO_HEO_Schedules/files/Ambleside%20Online%20Schedules/Pre-Year%205/

They are well done and might save you a bit of time. HTH

  10. Is dialing back thde arts & crafts a possibility?

If you have a functioning printer and paper, we could suggest a multitude of free sites.

I think we were posting at the same time :)

I really believe that early phonics instruction can be cheap and straightforward and the free sites are very effective. I love the Don Potter site

    http://www.donpotter.net/education_pages/valuable_reading_programs_f.html

  11. After using LLATL's other books with my older dd and really loving the red and yellow ones, I was also disappointed by the blue book when I decided to use it with my younger dd.

I modified it a lot. If you want to stick with it because money is tight consider skipping the things your child knows, particularly early on. Often I would also just point to the words or "sounds" in the teacher's manual instead of doing the craft with those words as we were supposed to. I am disorganized and I lost most of the letter cards during the year so I just wrote them out on a small whiteboard from the TM for that lesson.

Anyway, for all that my dd actually enjoyed making the flip book and word wheels so we kept doing them and I could see the purpose of them too.

So while I wouldn't necessarily recommend the blue book to anyone again I do think there are ways to make it work if you are stuck with it.
