  1. have both had issues with this over the years. We've used several prescription meds for it, ambien and rozerum more recently, but my husband finds that regularly taking a magnesium supplement is enough sometimes.

As far as the prescriptions go--I'm not comfortable with Ambien, because I found myself 'waking up' and getting out of bed in the middle of the night. I wouldn't remember it at all--didn't like that! The Rozerum is a prescription formulation using melatonin. It takes a while to become truly effective, so be prepared to make a commitment of several weeks to give it a chance to work well. You may find that using it for a month or so gets you back in a normal sleep pattern.

My husbands Dr. says he sees this often in people as they hit their late 30's and 40's, even those who have never had sleep issues in the past. No explanation as to why--but apparently it is more common than I realized.

  2. I don't have any explanation for you, but thanks for posting your experience! We too, are struggling with LONG Saxon practice sets. I'm committed to staying with Saxon, but the amount of time we are spending on it is getting crazy. We also get lots of careless mistakes. My son also suffers from major attention issues--will give this a try today and post our results!

I'd already considered breaking the set into small, 5-7 problem sessions--sounds perfect for a whiteboard lesson.

  3. Just wanted to add my .02 on this--I hope you are taking the advice from these other moms and keeping your baby home!

I also think you should take a hard look at your pediatrician. I think the suggestion that you drive that far with an 8 month old for a 'gifted baby class' is absurd. If you get any other 'out there' suggestions, I'd be sure to get a second opinion.

FWIW, my oldest walked well at only 8 months. He met all motor skills milestones very early, but he was also placed in a special ed (not special as in gifted) program at 18 months of age. Many years later, he does show giftedness in certain areas, but is also considered learning disabled in others. I don't consider his early motor skills milestones relevant to these issues at all.

If you really want to challenge your baby, I second the idea about sign language--

  4. My son did the first two books, literally, for fun. He would beg me to get to the next chapter--you could get through those (Fractions/Decimals %) quickly and IMO it will better prepare you for whatever 'official' Pre-Alg you choose.

Another thought, by the time you get through those two, the Pre-Alg from LOF may be available and you could go right into that. I'd expect that you'd be solid with Pre-Alg if you complete those 3 books.

We are personally adding Thinkwell as well as Saxon 1/2 because with math its especially important to me that he has mastered it--in his sleep. Unless he starts complaining we will keep it up. We don't do every chapter/problem set so it hasn't been too painful. :) BTW if LOF Pre-Alg had been available when I needed it, I would have gone that route. I will still get it when it comes out for extra practice--he finds it that fun!

  5. We just purchased it so I can't personally recommend it yet, but many of the moms on a gifted yahoo group use it with their math-gifted kids. If you want to read their comments on it, its at the yahoo group 'homeschooling mensans' (a great resource btw!).

There was a LARGE discount on Thinkwell at the homeschool buyers co-op. It is a video tutor (the same one chosen by The Teaching Company, who only picks the best of the best), he teaches short lessons with visuals and a little humor included--and there are practice problems.

We also enjoyed Life of Fred, (DS is BEGGING to start the Beginning Algebra book thats sitting here but I don't think he's ready for it yet) and the author is coming out with a Pre-Alg this fall. DS learned a LOT from the first two books but needs more practice on some of the topics covered that went beyond fractions/decimals/%. I don't feel confident that he could sail right through a pre-alg program without having more practice but with the new pre-alg I think it would be a more 'complete' program.

    Hope this helps!

  6. I appreciate your input! On EOG I meant end of grade testing--sorry, should have been more specific. The math scores avg'd mid 11th grade (although I realize the distinction that it only means he scored as well on the problem set as an 11th grader-not that he did 11th grade work) and he easily got to Algebra 1 on the Saxon middle grades placement test. This is what the tutor was going by--he has many years of Saxon teaching experience so I just followed his lead. I'm still baffled as to how he did that on the test so i was happy to have the tutor make the call.

Now feeling like I need to make sure he is prepared-I'm not mathy myself so I'm thankful for the feedback. Will ask the tutor about the 8/7 option.

    Thanks again!

  7. Hope it's ok to crosspost threads here-I meant to put this on the general curriculum board-- =)

    Hello!

I have learned SO much reading these boards the past few days. Thanks to everyone who shares this great info.

I wasn't able to find an answer to this specific question--

Saxon users--what are the most important skills to have nailed down before moving into Algebra 1/2?

We are only 1/3 through 7/6, but based on EOG results and the recommendation of the tutor we want to use, ds (11) is moving up to 1/2 this year.

I only have 2 weeks until then and I'd like to narrow down our focus because it would be impossible to get through the book.

From what I've read online, I'm thinking I should focus on fractions, decimals and %'s. I'd love to hear more input from some other Saxon users.

    Thanks in advance!!!!
