  1. well, I might be too late to help..you might have already gone and returned from your trip. But, I was searching good audio books and found your post.

My kids (ages 7, 10, 12) and I enjoyed the "Gooney Bird Greene" by Lois Lowry series..she's a second grader, but has a wonderful little attitude about her. And the vocabulary in these books are fabulous!

Another good one was "Trumpet of the Swan" by EB White. It was so much better to hear the story on CD because you actually get to hear the trumpet, instead of reading the trumpet sounds. :)

Lastly, on one of our vacations we listened to "From the mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by EL Konigsburg...very entertaining for all of us, including hubby!

    Hope that helps...:auto:

  2. Where do I find the corrections to the answer key. I have heard mention that there are several errors in the answer key. I think I've finally reached that point...or else, I'm majorly lost!

I'm at lesson 13..exercise 13.2 seems to be wrong in the key. Can anyone confirm this for me or direct me to the place where I can find the corrections?

    Thanks!

  3. Must be regional. One of the adoption supervisors at our agency just adopted and created an "artificial twin" himself.

what does that mean? "artificial twin" or "twinning" ..is that adopting a child the same age as your bio child? and when referring to "out of birth order" what does that mean?

I was just looking over adoption and thought sticking kids right in the middle of my kids' ages would be a good way. I have 12, 10 and 6.

  4. wow...I had forgotten (until I just read it) that I did the same thing when I was pregnant. In fact, before I knew I was pregnant with the 2nd, I remember having that deep belly laugh and thought to myself..I wonder if I'm pregnant. sure enough...

It is a beautiful sound and feeling, isn't it!!!

  5. for your responses. I really like the rhetoric and debate idea, along with the interaction and discussion setting.

I'm already going along a similar academic track as what is offered by CC. It's the social setting with the common academia that I desire most. Guess that's why I'm thinking it could be copied without the enormous expense.

As stated, though, the level of excellence depends on the attitude and intent of the children involved.

As big as my city is, I know of only 4 or 5 academic co-ops. I've never been a part of any of them...maybe I should just bite the bullet and join one, rather than starting my own.

  6. I used it with my daughter last year. The kit I bought included a parent guide, a passport/journal/workbook for the child and the audio CD's. I didn't know they had a DVD. But the CD's worked out well, because we listened in the car as we traveled to our get away destination and then used a CD player for the lessons in the room.

I highly recommend the program...it was a great memory!

  7. It's funny, I named my son Jonathon - simple, easy, everyone knows how to say it right? Sure, but EVERYONE misspells it :glare:. They add an h, or change the last o to a, or both! People also shorten it to Jon or (even worse) JonJon.

Now "misspelling" is a whole other thing...I agree! I often accuse my mom of misspelling my name at birth. LOL... it's because she expected a boy and had planned on naming him "Dean", so to make it feminine, she figured just add an "a". So, it's pronounced "DEEEnuh" not "DeAnna".

You're right though, what I think is the most logical spelling, certainly doesn't mean it's the same logic as everyone else.

  8. Like the OP.. I was a very timid child and frequently had my name mispronounced and unless my mother heard it, I just dealt with it.

In college I met a friend with the same name and spelling and she was VERY outspoken when the professor continually mispronounced our names. HA!

And then there was the time when I had my wisdom teeth pulled and had anesthesia. Just as I was about in la-la land, I heard the dentist say my name wrong...for some reason, all of a sudden, I had the boldness to correct him.

I intentionally spelt my children's names as simply as possible so that they wouldn't have to deal w/the same issue.

  9. Teach your child to read in 100 Easy Lessons worked for my 3 yr old. She finished her 100th lesson on her 4th birthday...what an accomplishment!

Check it out from the library before buying and look it over. It's only $15 to purchase and it works...I have 3 children who've learned to read with this book.

Doesn't hurt to try, especially if it's free!
