  1. Your ds sounds a lot like mine. The only use for a book for him is to use it to make a ramp for something or maybe to fix a wobbly leg! But, he a more "common" sense than me. I'll be doing something one way and he'll say, "Why didn't you do such and such?" Well, because I didn't think of doing it that way, which btw, was the better way! So much for my Bachelors Degree!

I'm going to stay put with him and see where we end up. But, I do think I may put my youngest ds12 back in CLE. He liked it when we used it and doesn't seem to be doing as well in MM. I may just pick up the 600 LU and see how he does in it for a month.

Thanks for your reply. It does make me feel better. I know I'm giving him more attention here than he would get elsewhere. Who else would turn themselves upside down and inside out over math.:001_huh:

  2. I know, you are right. It just scared me looking at the test prep. He's not ready for the 8th grade test. Hopefully, if I schedule the test on toward the summer, he will be more prepared.

Going back to CLE was just a thought bc while he is retaining MM from day-to-day, the cumulative reviews throw him for a loop. CD is set up the same way.

Its just so frustrating that he never really "gets it". He always has to ask me what to do next. I could try to make MM more spiral by working across lessons. I suppose we could try that approach.

The length of CLE lessons was killing us as well. They took forever, even when I marked out a lot of the review, which truthfully, he did need because he couldn't remember.

I just feel like I've really let him down. In trying to find what would work for him, I feel like I've hurt him more.

  3. I have absolutely. HAD. IT. with. math!!!! My ds is in 8th. We have tried every math program out there. Nothing clicks with him. He's bright. He just "forgets". EVERYTHING.

Tried spiral. Every other problem he's asking me, "How do I do this again?" Thought mastery would be the way to go. On cumulative reviews, he couldn't remember anything.

Needless to say, he's behind. Not as much as I thought until today though. We left CLE 6 and went to TT7. I found he wasn't applying his math in the real world. Picked up MM, had to go back to 6. That's ok as long as he's learning. I already had CD prealgebra and the MM actually lines up chapter for chapter almost. So, we work thru MM6, then do the cooresponding chapter in CD prealgebra. We're not too far behind, right?

Well, I started looking at the test prep book I want him to start and online tests. HOLY COW!

Got to thinking about CLE and how I wish I would've stayed with that, he can't remember from one thing to the next anyway. Went and looked at samples online, HOLY COW, again. Without actually doing the placement test, it looks like we would need to start back at 700.

    I just want to scream.

How can there be sooo much discrepancy between scope and sequence?

So, what do I do now? Keep my head down and continue with MM and CD? Jump back to CLE and do the 700 level then try to go to Algebra 1 in 9th? Put him in school and quit messing up his education?

After all these years, all these programs, you would think I would know what to use with my younger son. Nope. Still do not know. All the programs looks soooo good. Until.

If there is only one piece of advice I can offer to a new hsing mom, figure out early which math you will use and stick with it. Don't look at what so & so is using. The grass is always greener, you know. DO.NOT.JUMP.AROUND.WITH.MATH!

    Thanks for listening,

    Kim

  4. I want to make a cool "logo", but I only have MS Office programs in Windows 7.

My two boys love riding their dirtbikes, so my dh and I thought it would be cool to have them each a hat made at a local shop with:

    TMR

    for Team M**** Racing

My dh made up something, but he just used a traditional font and while it looks good, it looks more like something for a construction or landscaping company.:tongue_smilie:

How could I make the letters come off of each other, like the M comes of the stick for the T and the R comes off the stick for the R and it look funky, dirtbikey? Like the funky letter they use for Monster Energy, etc.

    Thanks for any help!

My boys will think they are soooo all that!

  5. This is super easy and really good:

    In crockpot, pour:

1 can black beans (rinsed and drained)

1 can whole kernel corn (rinsed and drained)

    1 jar salsa

    Chicken breasts

S&P, any other seasonings of your choice

I usually put this on around lunchtime and let it cook til supper. Shred chicken just before serving. Its kind of like a soup-type thingie.

Serve with sour cream and tortilla chips.

  6. I guess I mean teaching them how to really use an entire book or or multiple books to write their paper. Up until now, they have just been imitating an already written work, except for narrations.

I just don't know how to teach them to scan for info that would be a cohesive paper.

Like now, when I need something for a history topic, I will just google and pull things from different sources together into an IEW-type paper and then they do the IEW thing to it, basically rewriting from a KWO.

How do I teach them to do the part I'm doing, pulling info together?

Does that make any sense at all?:tongue_smilie:

  7. This is part of the review by Cathy Duffy that my friend referenced:

This series of ten workbooks is equivalent to a complete first year algebra course, although less difficult than most. ....... While Key to Algebra can be a full, first-year algebra course, it can also be used for review or as a gentle introduction, possibly using only the first seven books before a student begins a rigorous algebra course. Students who plan to go on to an Algebra II course should probably choose a more rigorous first year course.

I wonder if you paired this with MUS?:001_huh::tongue_smilie:

    I hate math programs!

  8. So we've been using a mish-mash of writing programs-WWE, IEW, Meaningful Comp, Remedial Outlining, etc. We've done the narrating, dictation, copywork.

I don't have a problem so much about teaching them "how" to write from material given to them, but how do you go about teaching them to "find" material?

Everything so far has presented them with a prepared document to "imitate". Even for a history topic we're studying, I will prepare something for them to use.

How do you get away from handing them the source document?

We've never done book reports. When we do bios, I give them the bio to imitate.

I just can't think this through.

    They're 12 & 14, btw.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Kim

  9. I really like the ease and low cost of digital. A lot of digital stores have dollar days, which allow me to get kits for a buck and I can use it for layouts over and over again. There are also tons of freebies out there. As long as you have a scrapping program, like Photoshop, the cost of kits is minimal. You can always download GIMP, which is free, and grab some freebies, and see if you like it.

www.digishoptalk.com is a good place to look for sales and freebies.

I'm downloading GIMP now to try out! Thanks for the link.

I know I haven't responded to every post, but I did take something from every one of them. Thanks everyone!

You know I also have a drawer full of photos to be scrapped too, so I'm going to try regular scrapping on those and digital with the ones stuck in my computer and see how it goes. I guess the most important thing is just getting them done.

I know once I get started, I will feel better. I'm just so far behind and have so much to do, it just hangs over my head and really stresses me out. You know, like when you get behind balancing your checkbook or something. You know you have to do it, but there's just so much to do to get caught up.

Thanks again everyone! I'm really enjoying reading all the posts.

Thanks for the link. There in itself is another problem! I can see myself sitting here for hours looking at digital kits. Then when would I come here?

BTW you inspired me to tackle some scrapping today ;) I do very little sorting - I just group pictures into sets of four and stick them onto papers that are similar and that will face each other once they are in the sheet protectors. I will sort out the order of the pages later. I am using a cutting mat (for the lines), quilting ruler, and two-sided tape and getting it done, hon ! It just flies this way.

Well, I'm glad somebody's pictures are getting done! I've spent all my free minutes today researching on the internet!:001_huh:

  11. Great thead. I'm feeling the same way. Maybe not anxious, but I have a lot of pics and the scrapbook stuff, I just need to sit down and DO it. It's hard though because I have to find the time and motivation to do it.

A couple of weeks ago however, I DID set up a spot in the basement with all of my stuff that I can lay out and work on, I've just had too much going on with Christmas. Now there are other issues that we're dealing with and well, I'm just not sure when I will start. Sigh.

I don't have a spot I can dedicate to this, so I would be getting it out and putting it up each time. That tilts the scale toward digital, but I'm old-fashioned! That would definitely be a learning curve.

  12. I LOVE traditional scrapbooking. I have done it for about 8 years now. However, with homeschooling and online college, etc. I just do NOT have the time.

For Christmas, I got the Creative Memories Digital Storybook software, plus a few add on CD's. I LOVE IT!!

It was actually your post that got me to thinking I need to make taking care of these photos a priority for the new year!

I just feel like a horrible mother for letting them get so far behind.

  13. Thanks for the replies. It really does make me sick at my stomach and very anxious-feeling, almost depressed!

I think a million thoughts. I have two boys, so should I make duplicate traditional scrapbooks so they can each have one? Should I go digital, then we can print them each one?

Which is more cost effective, traditional or digital? How do you even get a digital one printed?

Keep the ideas and suggestions coming!

  14. Thanks! I have to make gifts for 10 ladies, so I was looking for inexpensive ingredients. But, I don't think the baby oil would be the way to go.

I've never priced almond oil, but it sounds expensive. Do you just get it at a regular grocery store? The evoo shouldn't be too much. Most all of the recipes said you could even substitute veg oil, but that sounds kind of weird, like you're getting them ready to cook!
