leeannpal
My daughter will be 9th grade next year. We home schooled 8th grade, but she attended a school for 6th-7th grades. In 7th grade, she tested into advanced math which was a combo of pre-algebra and algebra. This year, we did an algebra program, but she is struggling. I do not feel that she has a complete grasp of Algebra I concepts. She does not like the detailed nature of math although she picks up concepts fairly easy, she struggles with showing her work She gets frustrated easily with math. I would like to start next year reviewing/strengthening algebra I and continuing into geometry or Algebra II. We need a good math program/teacher. Online is o.k .Any suggestions are welcome. Julie of KY
I think you are okay to move on to geometry while reviewing algebra. I would not move on to Algebra 2 if her Algebra 1 skills are weak. You might look into Derek Owens if you want an online teacher.
dereksurfs
I can second Derek Owens and also add Wilson Hill Academy. Both are excellent math course providers which we're using right now. For a struggling student, Jann in Texas is also well known to provide excellent instruction. This may be a better fit in your daughter's case. I recommend exploring all three. There are a few things to keep in mind as you research the various providers. * There can be a wide spectrum of rigor and associated workloads. Know what you are signing your dd up for before you do. Is it a good fit for her? * Asynchronous vs. synchronous live courses and the pros/cons with each. We like them both for different reasons. * Forum bias: just trying to be real. There are certain programs which are generally preferred more here than in other homeschool circles you may encounter. Example: before coming here all anyone talked about locally was MUS, TT and Saxon - the famous homeschool trio. :D Though not bad generally speaking, none of these appealed to us especially at the secondary level. * Benefits of outsourcing math and having outside accountability with a gifted instructor. This was a hugely positive experience and breakthrough for our middle dd this year who has never liked math.
