ELaurie
Our ds 8 has visual and auditory processing issues, which seem to be primarily related to a hypersensitive vestibular system. He has been working on nuerodevelopmental integration with a HANDLE provider for the past year, and the provider has recommended that he begin Interactive Metronome this summer. I'm interested in hearing other's experiences with this program. I am also evaluating whether to pay for the services out of pocket (ouch!), use the In Home equipment, which I have heard mixed reviews about, or train to use he professional level equipment myself, working with and IM provider for supervision, and perhaps launching a new career (well, not really, although I know of another mom who has done this, so it really could be an option if it proves helpful for my ds). I would love to hear from others who have btdt!
kRenee
I asked about doing interactive metronome at home recently and got some terrific replies. Do a search to find that thread. I think IM can help tremendously with motor/timing issues. I don't think it will help with auditory processing and make sure his vision has been remediated. ELaurie
I read the thread you mentioned, and found it very helpful. We have been addressing his visual issues this past year, and our care provider feels he is ready to begin IM while we continue to address his visual issues. He has difficulty with attention and focusing as well, primarily related to the visual and auditory issues.
juls
I think I posted before on the IM thread but I will update those who are interested again now that we have finished this current round of IM. I have be very fortunate to find a chiropractor who normally charges $50/session. Most places charge around $100/session. This practitioner was trained last year and my two boys were his first clients. My older son (now 10)went from Below Average to Superior in 12 session. This child is not really a special needs kid though, just a bit impulsive. My younger son (now 9), did 15 sessions last year and went from Severe Deficiency to Below Average. He hated going and was not always compliant. I decided to try again with him this year. His initial testing showed the the gains he made the previous year had all stayed. I was very pleased to see this and it confirmed what the research shows, gains are lasting. This time he was very happy to go and did very well for the practitioner. He did 6 more sessions and dropped his score another 20 points just missing the "Average" category. Low scores are what you are aiming for with IM. He began IM last year with an initial score of 219 and is now down to 88. A score of 80 will get him to the average range, so he is close. We have decided to wait another six to twelve months and try IM one last time. We will probably do another 6 sessions. I really want this child to end with Average abilities. I really am seeing some big changes in this child though! Just last night he was kind and "mature" with his older brother. And this morning he astounded me with his patience in a situation where I wasn't expecting to see any. Is this because of IM? I really can't know for sure but I'm pleased enough to continue and I do recommend it for others who might benefit. Juls
ELaurie
Thank you! That's very encouraging! I'm thrilled to hear of the progress your sons have made, and encouraged that perhaps IM will be helpful for our dc.
