MicahMaloo
My first grade son is totally fed up with workbook phonics...though he does not mind his handwriting at all. So it's not he actual 'writing', but for some reason working through a phonics workbook is really frustrating to him, for some reason. Anyway, I am buying 100 EZ lessons for my 4 year old son to use (he is ready!)....but my question is could I use this book for my older son as well? They say it goes to a 2nd grade level, is that correct? Could you give me some example words towards the end of the book so that I could see if he is past it or not? I don't think he is, but want to be sure. Hope that made sense!
Sara Mac
Whether 100ez lessons is appropriate for your older ds really depends on how far through phonics he is. If he can read simple cvc words and already knows the sounds of most letters then, IMO, 100EZ lessons is going to confuse him. You need to keep in mind that it uses an orthography that is very easy to use if they have done no previous reading but doesn't really allow for you to just jump in, for the first time, towards the end of the book. Some things that would possibly cause confusion are the lines over long vowels, the letters in th, sh & ch are joined together rather than shown separately, silent letters are shown as much smaller than the sounded letters, and I'm sure there are more that I'm missing. ;) Would your son prefer to read early readers at his level rather than go through a phonics workbook? Have you tried cutting out the writing portion (if that's possible) to just concentrate on the reading part and also complete the exercises quicker? My eldest dd got bored of doing 100EZ lessons around lesson 76 and I couldn't get her to restart it. She just moved onto reading beginner readers from the local library and working through each level. She is now working her way through the Junior Fiction section of the library  HTH Sara
MicahMaloo
Ok, thank you Sara.....he is definitely beyond 100 EZ. I have decided to just put the phonics away for a bit and let him read to build fluency where he is at. Then we'll just pick back up later, I guess. ;)

I've noticed that when I give my kids a "break" they tend to be better when we start back up.
