FreyaO Posted June 2 Share Posted June 2 Hello, I'm looking for kids books written by German, Czech, Austrian authors that have been translated to English. Probably not enough time to include Hungary. I'm thinking novels, but open to non-fiction books too. For late elementary/middle school ages. We are openly discussing history, but also don't want this to be exclusively about WWII. While going through my adult books, I realized everything I have from this region is by male authors (Roth, W.G. Sebald, Kafka, Kundera). Any contemporary or modern classic female authors that you enjoyed? I would very, very much like to avoid books written by American authors about these countries. Thank you! caffeineandbooks Posted June 2 Share Posted June 2 Some common ones you may have forgotten about: Emil Kaestner (Emil and the Detectives; The Three Twins; The Parent Trap). He was a significant anti-Nazi voice, but his kids' books are not about the war. The brothers Grimm Johanna Spyri (Swiss author) - she's best known for Heidi, but Wikipedia lists a bunch of others she's written and names some of the translators, whose names may appear instead of hers on the books. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
rose Posted June 5 Share Posted June 5 A Faraway Island is a decent book. It's about a couple of German Jewish girls who find refuge in Sweden during WW2 and goes through some of their trials there.
