Can you ask your husband what's so bad about the half hour commute? If you can find out whether he hates to drive, doesn't want that much time away from the family, wants to be able to go home for lunch, wants to be able to sleep later, or whatever, then you can maybe come up with some solutions to help. Since it means getting up earlier for work, maybe you can get up a bit earlier and have a breakfast ready for him - or have the whole family up earlier so you can all have breakfast together.
