  1. Hello all. It's been a long time since I've visited these boards. In that time I've been able to relax & grow with my oldest child. We held off starting SotW for a year & in that time my almost 4 year old has started working with us. It was such a great choice & I am so happy that things worked out this way.

In the past I've gotten so much help & encouragement here! I do appreciate all that everyone has done for us & I am grateful for this community.

I do have one question, which I'll post in the same thread, since I am pressed for time & need to be out of the house- NOW! ;)

I have been trying to mirror my reading (and plan in advance for future reading) in The History Of The Ancient World with my daughters SOTW reading. All was fine until (in my planning, not that far in reading!) I hit Chapter 8 in SOTW and now I feel like I've been flipped on my head! Did SWB go out of chronology with Gilgamesh? I did look at WTM''s resources, etc & did not find a chapter to chapter comparison to guide my reading to the girls. Does anyone know of such a resource? Or even a quick heads-up to what chapter would be appropriate to mirror chapter 8 in SOTW. I am happy to post what I have so far if anyone is interested.

    Much thanks in advance!

    Blessings.

  2. Hey there, wildflower, nice to see you around.

I'm homeschooling a September, an October, a July and a January born kid in this regs-crazy state. If I could go back and do it again, I'd plan them all to be born in July (and exactly four years apart so we could cycle a la WTM).

If she turns six on or before December 1st, she's of compulsory school age for the school year that starts the July before that December. But that doesn't mean she has to enter as a first grader. You do have to pick either K or 1st, though. I'm pretty sure the school district isn't going to let you effectively grade skip her every January. That means once you pick a grade, that's what you have to stick with for that whole school year. The school year runs from July 1 to June 30.

The reason we send the school district reports with official grades on them is so that they know where to put her if she ever goes back to public school. So, think about what you'd want to happen if she were forced to go to school this September. Would you want her in first or kindergarten? If she's not ready for first, go ahead and list her as a kindergartener for the 2010-11 year.

There are advantages to labeling her a half-year below: it's happier to skip a grade than hold her back one, she's more mature than her grade peers and therefore has an advantage in live classes and on tests, and there are no required subjects for K so you can put whatever the heck you want on your IHIP.

This doesn't meant she has to be doing curriculum labeled as K or first grade by the publisher. No matter what grade you call it, put on the IHIP and quarterly reports exactly what she's actually capable of and doing.

I hope that helps and doesn't sound bossy.

thank you so much! i only just found this reply! it does help a lot & am still working diligently to have all my ducks in a row. i am so nervous working with the local district in this crazy small town...... we have so many former & present school board members, teachers & administrators in our church who are against our hs decision & it makes me so nervous that we will meet this when we send in our ihip.....

    wish me luck!

  3. Hello.

I am collecting info for our 1st grade year, this fall, and am wondering what you all think.

We have used the ZB handwriting K book this year and like it. I am re-reading TWTM right now & wondering if I should utilize all of the ZB products (for consistency) or stick straight with the WTM suggestions. ZB offers spelling, writing and handwriting, we will be using the handwriting, should I add the others?

Thank you all for what is always patient and good advice!

  4. Hi. It's been quite some time since I have had spare time to be here & wish you all a Happy New Year.

I hope that you all will have great advice to get me ready for next year.

DD1 will start 1st grade in September, she turns 6 in November.

Because she is a November baby I feel that a January start date to her school year would best meet her overall needs for the long term.

I am not 100% sure how to accomplish this since I need to submit letters of intent and IHIP by July and August respectively.

Is there anyone in NY that has any experience with this or anyone else who has any insight of how to accomplish this?

    Thank You!

  5. What would you consider the necessary subjects that kids should do if you feel you are unable to do a full schedule because of grief? I understand Math, reading, but what else?

Art, for free expression & bible study.

Even in the coldest of weather I would do a nature walk as needed & try to possibly incorporate into it- nature study/ science & the wonders God has given us, I'll explain this one below.

    On a personal note-

I remember one particularly low moment for me standing in the entryway at church with a fussing child feeling the grief of loosing my dad & our hurting personal economy thinking there was no end to the hits coming at us. Looking at a tree outside the window, it was maybe January, & seeing swelling buds on a very dormant tree, it made me realize that spring would be coming soon & to let God do what was necessary to get us there.

Spring came & we made it through.

To me, getting out and experiencing God's world would be the best antidote for what burdens you. Fresh air & sunshine, like warm blankets for a tired soul.

    :grouphug:

I hope whatever is going on in your lives brings you closer to each other and God.

  6. Hoping someone can help. I have downloaded a bunch of apps direct to my iphone. Now i have a new macbook and want to sync so those apps show up on my macbook so that i can get them onto a new itouch. But everytime i hook it up it tells me it is going to override what i have on the iphone thus loosing all the apps, so i have not sync'ed yet. How do i get them off the phone and into itunes on the computer?

    i am running 10.5.8 & itunes 9.0.2

plug in your phone & iTunes will open automatically. select your phone on the left bar menu under devices. the top tabs will have "applications", select this. now you will see a picture of your phone and the ability to drag any app from your phone to your computer....

yes? if not PM me & i can go from there....

    good luck!

  7. Along this same line, I currently use a liquid softener for my clothes because I like the smell. But I'm using vinegar for the towels and bleach loads. Can I add some essential oil to the vinegar to get that lavender smell that I love? Or will it make oil spots on the clothes? My washer has a softener cup in the agitator and releases it during the rinse cycle.

I would micx the oil with the vinegar and then add it to the cup....

  8. any health food store has them. aura cacia is the best brand i know of. you can use whatever scent you like. in the winter we use clove oil for cleaning. i have a spray bottle with vinegar, water and the ee du jour. lavendar for spring. geranium or orange in summer and clove in fall (we really love clove!) makes the whole house come alive! enjoy!

do a web search, you may find them on amazon even!

  9. we have been 3 times with dd#1- twice at Port Orleans resort (on site) and once we stayed a month at liki tiki (in wintergarden). Both were fine. If you stay on-site, you have the option on using disney transport, if you stay off-site, you need to rent a car.

Liki Tiki's condo's are cheap and luxurious in comparison to disney's small, dank rooms. The price at the end was still cheaper to stay at LT & rent a car for a month vs. a week at disney....

they were remodeling all of the rooms when we stayed at LT 2 years ago.... we did tour and they were beautiful! check them out-

  10. A while back someone gave a link to search for pedophiles in your community. For the life of me I cannot find the link (that I thought I saved) and have done some searches, with no luck to a reliable source- every one says there are none in an area 20 miles from here where the county houses them while on parole (that was my control zip code to check for reliability).

Could someone please post the link if they remember or the OP sees this?

    Much thanks!

  11. I totally agree. My Medela Pump In Style went through 2 kids pumping for 2 years each and now a friend is borrowing it. Still pumping strong! WELL, WELL worth the $250 I paid for it about 5.5 years ago. I would do it again if it cost twice that. MUCH cheaper than formula!

For what it's worth, FORGET manual pumping. You work so hard and hardly get anything.

I've been Bfing for nearly 5 years now (had to see that in writing). I LOVE my medela, it is worth more than the 300 bucks I paid for it! I had the avent manual & could not get anything with it, even though I was soaking through nursing pads while away from DD for quick errands! The thing ended up breaking not too long after, the top popped off & would not go back on!

With that said I bought the medela pump thinking I would need it for maybe a few months... didn't know really what to expect. I turned out to be a milk producer of the heifer variety & got far more from it than I paid for it with DD1!

I would find the money, begs, borrow, begs some more. Get the medela!

BTW- I don;t know if anyone mentioned renting, but I would NOT. I noticed the rental prices at our pediatricians recently & some quick math came up with the pump costing several times more than my initial purchase!

    I hope this helps!

  12. I actually created a calendar of activities for my 2 y.o. while I'm working with my 5 y.o. Many of these are suggestions from "The Toddler's Busy book" or from our co-op preschool last year.

We are doing things like driving cars in shaving cream on a cafeteria tray, ice cube painting using powdered tempura paint, and finger painting with pudding.

I'll also set out beads, buttons, trays & string for sorting and stringing. DH is going to clean out the sand table and bring it in, so we will use that for a sensory table. The first week will be cornmeal, then water, and then I'm going to make moonsand.

My little one loves coloring and playdough so we will do that as well as set out chalk and a slate or a wipe board or something so he can play school too. I think I might actually be more excited about the 2 y.o.'s curriculum than I am about the K stuff :)! It definitely sounds like more fun!!

so cool, you MAKE moonsand?!? really?

  13. I put a heaping tablespoon in a few ounces of pineapple juice-- good stuff like knudesens not dole, that would never cover the taste, you are only using a few small ounces a day. I sometimes squeeze a small wedge of lemon into it, improves the taste dramatically! I let it sit for a few minutes & stir very well to make sure it is dissolved completely to be sure it goes down smoothly. My midwife told me you need the vitamin C for it to do it's magic! I chug it quickly followed by a glass of lime water. Gets your belly full in the a.m.!

Where I buy Brewers Yeast here in the U.S., nutritional yeast and brewers are the same thing, or so I was lead to believe.

I buy Lewis Labs brewers yeast- barely any taste.

  14. I know this is weird, but I just don't trust the metal. There was a time where aluminum baking pans were considered safe..... now, you never know what metals they put in their mix! Lead is in everything!

I must look like a crazy person in public, but I use a quart size ball jelly jar. They could never have lead in them, could they? You can throw them in the dishwasher & with the exception of one fluke cooler failure, did I ever break one.
